It is a problem with a lot of seinen having hyper-competent MCs, and their 'flaws' as being just too gosh darn competent for their own good, and conflict arises from other people/society rather than an internal conflict created by who the MC is and what they do. Granted thats also a problem with a lot of adult-targeted media in other countries, but the visual language and story telling style and pace of manga makes this very obvious.

That is a very common and quite old narrative tool in detective stories, when the detectives job and the truth conflicts with their conscience. Its an easy twist to include but the finesse is in the execution, it shifts the mystery into a character drama that involves the investigator as a possible accomplice, which is a chance to flesh them out more, and possibly set up a chekovs gun for later.

At least the mangaka stuck to the core concept of red headed norseman with a hammer, and finds the underlying mythology interesting enough that they stay relatively true to the spirit of it. And I like how they dont bend over backwards to justify how all these mythologies interlink and they just do As compared to fate/stay jack the ripper..... and fate/stay in general

High stakes Gambling is an entire sub genre now. Though most tend to have a really boring MC and generic supporting cast. Usogui is partly great because of the jojo-esque insanity of the world. Alwo ones involving female characters tend to be overly horny for no good reason? I unno Read Kaiji.

I like that point of Usogui though At the end of the day theyre only gambles and its only through Kakerou that the results stick. Not all Kakerou gambles are death gambles. When you have a powerful person willing to use violence involved in a bet, what guarantees they keep their word? Kaiji also has a different aim, and spends a really long time in the actual games.
