Getting caught up on this series. Whoever described it as painfully 80s Japan in a previous thread hit the nail on the head. I guess people would come home from working too hard to relax and read a manga about people working too hard

Is the Gantz manga better than the Gantz anime? I watched a few episodes of the anime and wasn't impressed.

I've never seen the anime so I can't give you a comparison, but I don't think Gantz is very good. I've never made it through the series. After the first arc it has this feeling like things are just being made up as they go along. Pretty much all manga are written this way, but it's important that you can't tell that just as a reader. New developments don't feel connected to old ones, everything seems random and more about style than substance.

Did your friend buy those copies in Hong Kong or something? Those were all problems that plagued the early fan translations.

You should compare your volumes to the "look inside" previews for the Dark Horse translation on Amazon and see if they match up: http://www.amazon.com/Berserk-Vol-3-Kentaro-Miura/dp/1593070225/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y

I only have the first volume, too, and it's fine.

Where did they get paint and gas on a deserted island? :iiam:

edit: Maybe their used alchohol or something for the fire. Still. Wonder what's up with the island.

He says he collected the gas from abandoned vehicles around the island.

Gasoline has an effective shelf life of only a handful of years, but that's only if you're planning on using it to run an engine. If you're just lighting it on fire I'm sure it'd still be functional.

Then again, there was also another Lord of the Flies situation a while back (the guy the MC got his dog from is remnant from that era). I guess if that group just killed each other instead of banding together they might not've gotten to the point of trying to scavenge things from the island.

Bambino chapter 19

Finally someone shuts down Tsuchimiya for being an insubordinate rear end (Bacanale Chef Asuka, Ban's temporary replacement) in the right way, a firm verbal warning that his disrespect will not be tolerated and further outbursts will jeopardize his job. Although now its looking like he gets his own sad sack story so people feel sympathy for him. Something about a woman he lives with milking him for all he's worth, or possibly he's crazy and its a body pillow.

It's funny that being a abusive gently caress might be the solution to Bambi's problems, maybe someone should smack Tsuchimiya around like Bambi used to get

I think the author fancies himself some sort of modern day renaissance man.

He does the normal research you do when making a series that requires specialized knowledge. He just has a really weird fourth wall breaking narrative style where he inserts himself into it too much

Also, I found the translator's notes in the recent suicide island chapters to be pretty obnoxious. If you must have your quibbles with relatively minor factual details, stick it in a note at the end of the chapter instead of slapping a snotty "again, inaccurate" note in the middle of the page

Was there ever a reason to suspect that Norito had the disease too? I don't recall any foreshadowing and its not like since one person in the family has that type of disease that everyone will come down with it. I don't recall it being a thing for him.

theres no reason to say he definitely has it, but its a genetic disease and his sister has it too and he has tons of anxiety about getting it. his rationale for pursuing manga the way he does is "one day, and it might be really soon, i may be completely incapable of drawing". he doesnt definitely have it, but its wrong to automatically assume he doesnt too. its left a bit up in the air. honestly, i dont think it matters at all to the story as presented if he has it or not.

i like survival stories where there's a lot of focus on robinson crusoe type stuff. like in suicide island or 7seeds. building a life out of nature. although 7seeds is quite a bit more science fictiony and fantastical

riki-oh is famous for its movie adaption, Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky, which is notoriously graphically violent

on just the level of pure gratuitous over the top gore it does its part on living up to the manga

New Suicide Island. Bad things happen. Whatever. It's kind of a dumb series.

I did enjoy the period when it was awkwardly translated by brits or whatevs and was just like "hey mate, were you stabbed by that bloke?? He's a mean bloke! we've got to go fight those other blokes!"

i always liked the part of that series where its the process of the main character figuring out a way to hunt wild deer from mostly scratch and i always wanted to find a series thats just that somehow

Yeah but I don't think it was as common, right? Or maybe I'm overestimating how recently the "only washing every once in a while" stuff was.

At the very least I imagine people didn't have deodorant (or at least deodorant as effective as modern deodorant).

that was only dirty western european mud farmers. superior nippon had a bathing culture, especially the noble samurai

theres a scene in james clavell's shogun where the japanese beat up the main character and forcibly bathe him

quote:

"Ah, daimyo. Hai. Daimyo!" Mura shrugged. "Daimyo come when come. Sleep. First clean. Please."

"What?"

"Clean. Bath, please."

"I don't understand."

Mura came closer and crinkled his nose distastefully.

"Stinku. Bad. Like all Portugeezu. Bath. This clean house."

"I'll bathe when I want and I don't stink!" Blackthorne fumed. "Everyone knows baths are dangerous. You want me to catch the flux? You think I'm God-cursed stupid? You get the hell out of here and let me sleep!"

" Bath!" Mura ordered, shocked at the barbarian's open anger-the height of bad manners.

all the industry stuff in bakuman is legitimately interesting. my favorite parts are seeing the manga ideas they come up with in a show-within-a-show kinda way. theres a bit of apologia for the publishing and editorial side of the industry, but thats to be expected

the love story between the main character and his gf is just a bit insipid, thats all
