I've had a X270 for about a year which came with the 1366x768 shitbag screen. I actually bought a 1080 IPS panel for it, guessing which the exact one needed was, but couldn't buy the different back panel needed because the Lenovo parts store was ultra crappy (not in stock then wouldn't accept payment in GBP but also wouldn't allow me to change currency). Anyway having just moved countries I finally got around to ordering the panel and bezel from lenovoflex. Took it apart and... the new panel fits straight in using the original back and bezel. Not a single tool needed. I am torn between feeling happy it was so easy and annoyance at having spent a year squinting at a rubbish TN low-res screen. I think the glass is half full today. Things are pretty small but I guess crisp and readable at 100%, can I ask what scaling people use on these 12.5" screens?

henpod posted:So I ordered this last week as it was on a black Friday offer (£599 down from £850) as it seemed like a good deal, but there's actually not much in the way of reviews around the internet. Do any of you guys have much to say on this one? If it's really just for Office you could get something like this for pretty much the same price (ThinkPad X280 - 12.5" FHD - Intel I5 8250u - 8 GB - 256 SSD £650): https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X280-12-5-FHD-Intel-I5-8250u-8-GB-256-SSD-Warranty/183547244469 I have a X270 for shitposting and light officeing and it's excellent. They keyboards on Thinkpads are awesome and the FHD displays are good. My previous laptop is a X230 which I got in 2013, it is completely functional despite being lugged all over the place for 5 years, and I expect this current one to do the same. Almost certainly that ideapad will fall apart in that time.

anothergod posted:I think 13" will be fine as long as it's got a nice screen. He liked the screens on the Surface Pro 6 and my T460p. I'm currently eyeing the Thinkpad L380, though I'm sure part of that is my Thinkpad affinity. ThinkPad x1 yoga ? You could have a look through the outlet site to see if you can find a 3rd gen but here's a 2nd gen for $500 https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/outletus/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/Thinkpad-X1-Yoga-2nd-Gen/p/20JEX50300

Mark Larson posted:However, I am starting to get very, very annoyed by Windows' heavy-handed update system. Its not uncommon to open up my laptop in the morning and be greeted by an empty system, where all the apps and stuff I was working on are gone. The least Windows can do is say that the system would be restarted, which sometimes does happen on my Desktop, also Windows 10 Pro. I've taken to saving stuff before I suspend the laptop for the night but it is unbelievably annoying to not have the guarantee that things stay the same from night to morning. TBH I'm thinking of installing Linux but that also has its downsides. https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

$2500 is MacBook pro territory which is probably worth it for work over the M2 Air, with the better screen, better cooling and pro/max processors. That budget will get an upgraded 14" or a 16" depending on how portable you need. Different segment but Lenovo also does the P series Thinkpad workstations in Intel or AMD flavors. I'd get the Mac though, if it runs the tools you need, they are great machines. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/macbook-pro-14-laptop-apple-m1-pro-chip-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-latest-model-silver/6450857.p?skuId=6450857 https://www.bestbuy.com/site/macbook-pro-16-laptop-apple-m1-pro-chip-16gb-memory-1tb-ssd-latest-model-space-gray/6450859.p?skuId=6450859 knox_harrington fucked around with this message at 05:23 on Nov 3, 2022 |

If you are not tied to Windows and will be using an external screen / can cope with a smaller one, I would look at a used macbook air m1. If you're not gaming and are doing some kind of media work it will be a super nice tool.

El Grillo posted:Anyone else had experience with modern Thinkpads and battery life? My work laptop is a current gen X13 and to be honest the battery life is pretty bad. I'm not sure if that's because it's full of corporate spyware, because Teams is a colossal pile of poo poo, or because the battery life is actually bad, but actively working on it I only get a few hours if unplugged. My own machine is a macbook pro m1 I got last autumn, it's streets ahead of the thinkpad in battery life, and tbh most other respects. Bit of an adjustment to the OS of course.

Bobby Deluxe posted:I hadn't much, I had a quick look through the OP, are there any UK sites that are particularly trustworthy? Hi Bobby. I've bought several thinkpads off UK eBay in the past, you can filter for "new" and buy it now and often get a good deal. My previous few ones were recent X models and like £500. Maybe there's been some inflation but you should be able to get a good deal. Of course check it is a UK spec laptop shipping from the UK. £700 gets you something like this T14S Gen1 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134253190809 Or this T14 Gen2 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374372754088
