So I'm currently running AR/Shotgun, but I'm wondering if AR/Pistol might be better. My reasoning is that I'm glyphed for Penetration, so I'll get less marginal damage increase from Breaching Shot than from Deadly Aim (since BS can't make a Pen a double pen, but DA can make it a Pen/Crit). Thoughts? Or should I suck it up and go AR/Ele, and bring Short Fuse instead?

When you're in QL 2 or 3 Greens you should be ready for Polaris, which can be found at the bridge in Kingsmouth. If you have higher ping then Hip Fire is a better alternative (with the passive that doubles range), since you'll build resources about 50% faster than with Safety Off. Or you could just use another weapon.

Don't get me wrong, I run AR with hip fire. But in theory, there might be some minuscule part of the player base who would prefer pistols or something.

Glyphs on weapons only apply to attacks with that weapon. Glyphs on talismans apply to all attacks (including Auxiliary weapon attacks). Edit: Your target for endgame should be 650-700 hit. In the mean-time, upgrading your weapon skill level (whichever track is highest for each of your equipped weapons) should also reduce glances.
