Whatever job I apply for would likely be in lines with what I'm doing now, and since I've only had one job out of college that's really all I had to write about in my résumé. I'm not actively pursuing a job at this very moment, but I'm considering moving to Washington DC from Indiana and thought I'd better have my résumé up to date sooner than later. I was hoping to have something lined up job-wise before making the move, but it sounds like that might be an issue if whatever company ends up expressing interest discovers I currently live 9 hours away. I've seen recommendations abound this in the thread, but I don't think my paltry 3 years of experience will make me attractive enough for a company to give me an offer without already having my feet on the ground in DC. Any thoughts on how to handle this? My best friend lives out there so I could list her address if it would help.

These are my thoughts with basic feedback for you.

I have written a basic critique of your resume. I like that you have quantified some of your job description content, but it still has a ways to go. Especially because I am certain there is much more you can say about your work experience. I think you already know this, but if you send your resume as a .PDF you will avoid any issues with the page length.

Here is a very basic critique. Basically, you need to focus on particular skills and methods you are familiar with since you don't have any recent work experience. You can do this by adding them to the academic projects and skills section, and putting a "relevant" coursework under your degree. Hope this helps!

If I am expecting (and desiring) a bit of travel, does stating that I have already done so help or is that a given?

I have the line: Experienced Business Traveler: Asia, Europe, Central America

Follow the classic show don't tell advice you have heard countless times. Show your travel experience within the context of your experience. That may include simply listing study abroad experience, bullet points involving business travel within your job description (where you traveled and what you did, etc.), foreign languages you speak, volunteer experiences abroad, etc.

-Implemented the Army logistics system in Panama and conducted 3 months of training and monitorship

-Developed training programs and conducted training for U.S. Forces in Europe

Kinda wordy but something like this?

That's closer to the idea but the grammar and details are poorly written. A better example would be to say "Developed and conducted five U.S. Army logistics training programs to units with up to 60 local Technicians on-site in two Western European countries." That sentence is still lacking the detail to make it impressive but is closer to what you should aim to write.

Next question: how do you capitalize on having a security clearance? I would assume an employer would want to know that I was checked out and am not a crook.

Just state it or do I need to explain it?

That's a huge qualifications and belong at the top of your resume in most cases. I typically include that in a "Profile" or "Summary of Qualifications" section at the top of the resume underneath the sentence itself as a bullet point. Something along the lines of "DoD Security Clearance: TS/SCI-cleared."

And if I give tuition independently and want to be a tutor/teacher, can I put that down as 'work experience' that they're asking for>

Job listings are often a wish list. Exceptions would be jobs that require professional licenses and that sort like accountants. Otherwise, if all the job requires is that you email them a resume and cover letter this should not take more than two minutes of your time.

I don't understand what you mean when you say you "give tuition". Can you rephrase that.

I'm finishing up a professional program at NYU here in a few weeks looking to go into a creative/design field and was wondering about how my resume should look. Right now it doesn't look bad at all, but a lot of the people in my program are making theirs pretty spiffy. Googling "design resume" brings back some very nice looking ones but I don't know if they are actually practical. Where would you draw the line with adding extra elements to make it more creative/stand out?

A resume and a portfolio are both just as important to the application process. But they both serve separate but aligned purposes. The portfolio will demonstrate you work while the resume can provide the context for understanding it. Anything more than bold, italics, underlines, and a few different sized fonts is overdoing it and will make the resume hard to read because it will distract from the content. Do you really want to attempt to show off your design skills in a document completely full of text?

Put a link to your portfolio inside the resume (your website or your PDF uploaded to a cloud) and leave it at that.

Any critiques would be welcome! This is a state agency and a training position. I could have listed half a page of my normal probation/parole agent job duties but decided to focus on my accomplishments and specializations that not many of the other 1,000 of me do. I added the instructor as a 4th reference(left out that page).

Attached is a critique. This needs a ton of work but also reconsider bringing in a new resume tomorrow. They chose to interview based on the resume you previously submitted and the questions they have are likely based on that previous resume. If you do choose to use a new resume, consider providing it in advance by email if you can.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/is1b3mc8rqt78n5/ReekostestResumeDec2014.docx?dl=0

I've attempted to tune it towards emphasizing computer knowledge and high sales amounts, but I'm not sold on my phrasing and I haven't ever had any actual tech job nor do I have credentials. Outside of my current online sales job and some months spent as a hardware tester, all of my work experience has been contracting with various construction companies. I'd like to include something about all of that experience given that it's tough work and shows that I can handle stress and difficult conditions. However, building houses doesn't really have anything to do with fixing computers and selling anti-virus packages, so I've left all of it out for now.

Any thoughts would be great, I'm not really sure what else to change at this point.
