I was at the consulate yesterday to get my visa. A guy ahead of me got sent away to photocopy something or whatever, and came back while I was at the window. He was muttering the whole time about the "loving communist bitch" who made him do whatever trivial task it was. I'm no expert, but I don't think that guy is going to have a good time in China.

I guess I'll ask a question about t&t: If I have an L Tourist Visa, and I marry a Chinese citizen, do I have to change it to a Q2 Family Visit visa? Or is that only if I want a longer stay?

I recognize that this could change at any time, especially since none of them are valid at all right now. :china:

Make sure your hotel accepts foreigners. If it's a major western chain, like a Marriott or Hilton, in a major city you can be almost sure that they do. But some independent hotel in a small town may not. I don't know how many hotels still aren't set up for police registration but it doesn't hurt to confirm.

For the flight you can buy a refundable ticket, and then after you have a visa buy the cheaper non-refundable ticket and refund the original ticket.
