It's being reported as a bad thing but no breaking news in TV like you'd see in the USA. All the fengqing are already posting on CNN "a bunch of firecrackers went off, no big deal". I guess it happened in Terminal 3, and given the way things work there it's not really possible to do a lot of damage. Lots of big, open spaces, plexiglass and steel.

Probably not, the stuff you read online about China only issuing certain visas in your home country is old, just something they instituted for the 2008 Olympics and removed after the Shanghai Expo was over.

They have lots of artsy independent films and cool lesser-known TV shows in addition to the normal blockbuster/network fare. Also their international films are usually subtitled in multiple languages so you can watch French or Japanese movies you've never heard of before instead of Big Bang Theory or whatever. They also showcase a lot of awesome and creative Canadian short films.

What are some English short stories that would be appropriate and interesting to 9th grade students in China? The school nixed my plan to have the students buy Kindles (breaks already constantly broken school rule on electronics) and now I have to make my own textbook and have it printed in the next few days. The only stories I can think of right now are by Flannery O'Connor and Shirley Jackson, both of which I read in school and in retrospect they are pretty disturbing. I have three goals - cultural literacy, learning vocabulary through reading, and hopefully getting them interested in seeking out and reading cool books. They need to be more on the 7th grade reading level, though.

It doesn't bother me as much as the constant talking about me as if i can't understand them, even if they know full well that I can. My halfbreed baby seems to be on a first-name basis with everyone in my community and my cousins-in-law don't even know my name. It's often innocuous poo poo like "I see he bought yogurt today. He didn't buy yogurt yesterday." but it often makes me feel like I'm being group stalked or something, I had a friend here who was a super-nice guy and really very fat. Everywhere he went people were gaping at him and saying poo poo like "oh gently caress look at that big loving fat foreigner" but he couldn't understand them, and I could. One time a taxi driver in Beijing started fretting about his suspension and wouldn't let him into the taxi. We told him the guy said no foreigners. I think if my friend understood Chinese he would have been really freaked out by constantly being the subject of public conversation and ridicule. I know that hanging out with him and overhearing these conversations I always felt very uncomfortable, and he definitely got the sense that this sort of thing was going on and tried to brush it off. Eventually he got kinda weird and panicky and went home. I don't mind it - probably I'm the most visible guy in my community - but I certainly think it's creepy and don't necessarily revel in the attention. "Welcome to China" is the only that really bugs me. I know it is more of a token "you are welcome here" but when you've already explained to someone how you have been living here 5 years and they come back with "welcome to china" it makes you think they haven't been listening to you at all.

They are really freaked out about things like lithium batteries and compressed gases busting open on airplanes or in the back of overheated mail trucks. I have had vinyl records shipped from the us and they had really obvious heat damage. I guess the logic is they aren't careful enough to protect your package from adverse conditions so they just make sending anything remotely explosive against the rules.

FearCotton posted:But sometimes people don't want to mess with mixing a Chinese and a US medical history. I don't quite understand this because there is literally no such thing as a Chinese medical history. 90% of prescription drugs can be bought from a pharmacy without a prescription. For example I just take zoloft and it's kind of hard to find so I just go to the store and order 6 months' worth for about $30 and they have it the next day. A lot of times you might ask for something and the person will be lazy and tell you they don't have it, but if you google translate the generic name and show it to them they can most likely order it. The only classes of drugs they put restrictions on are benzos and opiates, as far as I can tell. And diphenhydramine, for some reason.

Spiderjelly posted:have a recommendation? I used to take Ativan (lorazepam) which you could buy over the counter without prescription, but I'm not sure if you still can. Most drugs that are fun (benzos, opiates) are restricted here, but you can still get them from a doctor, although they don't like to give them out. The only benzos I have seen here are Ativan and low-dose Valium. A lot of times a pharmacy will insist they don't have something but can actually order it if you find an employee/manager willing to call the supplier. But you can get all sorts of stuff on Taobao, and it know for a fact that people in the us who buy powdered xanax and whatever over the internet are sourcing it from China. So such things are no doubt possible. I found taking 50mg of Zoloft daily had a profound impact on my anxiety problems.

# ¿ Dec 29, 2013 04:53 |

Perhaps. I knew a guy who had anxiety problems and went to a doctor and they gave him Valium. I've only really had experience with dentists who don't want to use painkillers and you have to argue with them.

If you have real anxiety problems your brain is responding to a nonexistent stimulus, though. I used to get panic attacks and basically my body would go into fight-or-flight for no reason whatsoever. I took benzos for a little while but eventually went back to Zoloft and smoking weed every now and then, which seems to be the ideal solution for me. Marijuana has a paradoxical effect, though, in that occasional use helps with anxiety but chronic use exacerbates the problem. So I have to moderate significantly, which China does for me anyway because it's somewhat rare and hard to find. I don't think you can understand what this problem is like unless you have it, though. Basically your brain is triggering primitive defense mechanisms for no reason whatsoever, and being in a place where you are always an otherized center of attention can make things a lot worse.

You are right, though - China is full of awful people doing awful, selfish things. But so is everywhere else, generally. If anything my time here has made me more aware of the incongruities of first-world lifestyles and how we devote massive amounts of time and effort to passionately arguing with each other and complaining about "problems" that barely exist. I have a really hard time carrying on a conversation with people other than long-time friends when I go home. The subject inevitably turns to politics or offensensitivity issues and I want to start punching people in the face and lecturing them about how they should be loving grateful they didn't grow up in a dirt floor farmhouse in rural Henan and they have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Spiderjelly posted:See, it's not that, I don't think. It's more that I'm having trouble measuring out appropriate responses to real stimuli. Freaking out over being stared at, that sort of thing. Benzos can take the edge off. I find Ativan doesn't give you a buzz but makes it really difficult to get upset about anything. The key is to only use these them as short-term or occasional "as needed" because it's very easy to get addicted. People may disagree but I fully believe in better living thru chemistry so long as you are conscientious about using drugs.

Again, I want to stress learn how to use pptv/pps/youkou and search for titles in Chinese - things usually have different names but if you set Google to Chinese and search the English name the Chinese name will pop up in the sidebar. It's free, everything you would want to watch on iplayer/hulu/netflix is online, usually faster than those services get things up. I am a lifelong torrent user and have basically stopped because almost everything I want to see is available streaming on one of these 3 platforms.

I think he wants overtime because of the time displacement due to the New Year holiday (i.e. Saturday and Sunday are now Monday and Tuesday) thus he wants overtime pay for those extra two days. I would say just let it slide, once you get to the point where you're telling your employer that your contract says such-and-such your relationship has deteriorated significantly, and getting up in arms about it is going to piss off all your Chinese coworkers for whom this is a normal thing nobody likes but everyone puts up with because everybody has to do it. If it's, like, every week you are teaching over your hours just kindly explain you either want more money or are just not going to do it. But if this is still about the holiday, this is normal, nobody is trying to screw you here.
