kansas posted:I am hired an employee who earns approximately 40k a year in San Francisco. Got a ride with him to lunch this past week and found out he drives a ~$45,000 BMW. Did he buy it used, or could it have been a lease? I drove a $120,000 BMW, which I paid about $6000 for. There are nuances.

PurpleLizardWizard posted:Japan is an especially unusual example due to the extreme risk aversion. In most countries, you buy stocks, the company has more money, they buy more assets, hire more employees, you get a dividend, etc. Your dividend (or ability to sell the stock for a higher price) is essentially interest on a semi-risky loan with no collateral. Doesn't this make the economy more robust? I heard that in the western world, the economy is based on consumption, so when the economy worsens, consumption and demand drops, and you're in a downward loop. In Japan/the East, a large part of the economy goes into savings, so when the economy worsens, consumption stays constant, while savings drop. Whether this is true or not I don't know, it's something I heard in a discussion.

Hocus Pocus posted:A guy I know who makes minimum wage had some laptop troubles so he took it to Harvey Norman. For context Harvey Norman is an Australian retailer that sells electrical and white goods, furniture, and notoriously expensive computer kit. This is why it's good with money to learn to replace a $40-80 harddrive and reinstall Windows and drivers.

Aren't there funds that only invest in alcohol, tobacco, guns, porn, coal power and child labor and just keep making money?

Hadaka Apron posted:I just want to reiterate how bad it is with money to pay people to do your laundry for you. I just decided to try it since I am extremely bad at folding clothes, and it costs six times as much as it would with the pay laundry machines in my building's basement. I didn't decide to go back on it because I didn't want to be a jerk to the people at the cleaners, but I will never, ever be doing this again. Good with money: When you're on a business trip and work is reimbursing you for your expenses, bring your laundry to the hotel.

Series DD Funding posted:The discounts can be really high. Laser hair removal is generally around 75-80% off. Although to be fair, it can be fairly easy to pay under the sticker price if you ask for bulk discounts without a Groupon. What do you have to look like to get a bulk discount on hair removal?

The cheapest hair cut for men in Norway is about $60. A hair trimmer at our version of Walmart is under $30. I could buy a new hair trimmer for every single haircut, have my wife cut my hair and still come out ahead. (Cost of wife not included in calculations).

I know MLM is hilariously bad with money, but what if you sign up with Amway, Mary Kay, Tupperware or similar and sell them through a retail storefront or on eBay? Or do they have in their terms and conditions that it MUST be sold through homeparties and door-to-door?

Notice how in the Postmates article her husband places every order? She tries to tell us that it's "eat delivered food at home or don't eat all", but I can guarantee that if her husband didn't punch in the order for her, whatever mental illness she has will not let her place her order, and it will be "don't eat at all"-
