FogHelmut posted:What's the best way to drive up to Mammoth from Orange County / points south? Through LA or through Riverside? I like to take the 241 to the 91 to the 15 to the 395. I like sightseeing in the high desert. I know of older and wiser people that prefer the 5 to the 14 to the 395. Might be better for getting there more quickly. It's really a personal preference and when you plan on going (since the 91 can be real slow)

Maybe you have to drive through more small towns if you go through Riverside? Small towns tend to have speed traps.

if the purpose of calexit (which, once it gets a vote, will be completely and utterly shut down by the voters, especially native californians) is to split California off, then wouldn't it make more sense to stick around to make sure it happens and then (continuing the delusional mindset) transform California to your will? I can't wait to see these measures fail at the polls so that we can pollute the ballot with funnier measures like limiting the number of starbucks in a square mile with respect to population density and changing the state flag to have a black bear or a sea lion. Or even better, splitting California itself

It has to be said that home prices (especially in desirable areas) are inexplicably high right now. There's been (and still is and will be) a bunch of new apartment construction going on. When inventory supply exceeds demand, the prices might get more reasonable. But I wouldn't try to time it.

I remember driving back from temecula and picking up 15 avocados for $5 (or was it $3?) and a huge bag of oranges for cheap too. I want to bring some friends to Temecula (from Orange County) but the 91 is a poo poo show, the 76/78 is quite the detour and I can't guarantee that I'll still have friends after taking the Ortega. Has anyone ever actually been on the Ortega as a passenger? I feel it would make anyone sick if they weren't the driver.

FogHelmut posted:I've driven it plenty of times, as a driver and passenger. It's fine. Going to Big Bear is much worse. True. I wanted to make it a day trip (I usually just go there for an afternoon for christmas shopping) but if I'm taking people, maybe we should stay a night. Taking the 76 or the 78 would add about an hour and a half, maybe splitting the driving duties would work too. There's supposedly a lot of incoming foreign investment in the Temecula wineries including more lodgings. More options incoming soon, sounds like. After attending a wedding in Lake Arrowhead, me and another driver talked about how the passengers were basically passed out (for good reason, and I think I would have preferred to drive) and we (the drivers) had to navigate ourselves.

FogHelmut posted:Did you ever do this? I drove the Ortega last Saturday to go to a wedding in Temecula. I had my wife, my infant son, my mother in law, her cousin, and their friend in the car. No one puked, everything was fine. Nope. My temecula trips are usually in december or on a whim But you probably drove with more care. I guess I'd probably drive with greater than usual care as well if I had passengers

Yeah, it depends on what you're looking to do. There are great breweries in north San Diego County, wineries in Temecula, skiing in Mammoth (which is at the edge of your 6 hour limit), hiking in Lone Pine and Bishop (4 hours), etc

the nice thing with new technology is that you can just bring up google maps and show how bad the traffic is right now. And there are mechanisms that show traffic trends for a given time of day, so you can show that it's bad ALL THE TIME

woodenchicken posted:So I was planning to fly to LA, to hang around and take in some sights for a week or so. Some online guides recommend renting a car, but you guys are making it seem like a terrible idea? How hosed am I if I just want to drive to some touristy places during the day and avoid rush hours? You might want to crosspost in the los angeles thread. Having a car is essential, but it's equally important to know how long it will take to get from one place to another. If you are crossing downtown all the time, then you will spend a lot of time in traffic. If you plan your trip right, you can avoid that mess. Google maps can tell you how bad traffic usually is, given a date in the future.

FCKGW posted:The IE was hit especially hard in the recession and housing still hasn't recovered to peak prices yet while OC and LA have blown past that already. Some of the nicer parts of IE like Chino, Eastvale, Norco and Rancho are increasing faster than other parts but just last year both of my wife's sisters bought 3-bed houses in Riverside for around $300k. Not bad areas either. I insist on being close to the beach even though I've never actually set foot on it for decades but hey, at least I can take a scenic route on the pch while doing errands
