NHL 94 Anniversary Mode
Forget all the rules. Penalties? Get out of here! Offsides? Nope! Icings? Not a chance! Just old school NHL 94-style gameplay that uses classic button controls to deliver big hits, real fights, dirty dangles and sick snipes! You can even celebrate those moves with a new take on classic goal celebrations.

Dynamic Ratings Updates
Hockey players can be a superstitious bunch, whether they’re riding a hot streak or a cold spell. Now the rosters of NHL 14 will more closely match the action on the ice. NHL 14 introduces Dynamic Ratings Updates for the first time to the series, which bases in-game updates on real-world NHL performance for "Play Now" and "Online Versus" modes*. If an NHL player has performed exceptionally well over a stretch of games, they may receive a temporary boost to their ratings. But if a player’s performance has been lackluster, you may see their ratings change negatively. Hot and Cold streaks will be initiated based on Points and Goals Scored for Forwards and Defensemen, while Goalies will be measured on Save Percentage.

Has 2K given up on NHL games entirely? The last ones sucked, it would just be nice to have some competition.

A few years ago: NHL 2K11 was the final release, and Wii-exclusive. I still play 2K8 with updated rosters, but it's getting... well... difficult. 2K10 had some good ideas, but was pretty clunky on a whole.

If EA would just release a PC version of these games, the starved community would probably turn that thing into gold.

With the Xbone and PS4 both x86 they might actually possibly consider thinking about potentially looking at the preliminary draft idea of creating PC versions again, so there's that.

ESPN NHL 2K5 is the best hockey video game ever made. I poured my soul into that game.

Yeah that's mainly the reason why I'm asking if 2K will ever make a hockey game again... they lost their step once EA put out the Skill Stick, but 2K5 was way ahead of what EA was doing at the time.

In my book 2k7 played a little bit better but 2k5 had infinitely better presentation so yeah. The thing with the 2k series was that it just played so goddamn well, particularly once you hosed with the sliders a little. People can say all they want about how much more realistic EA's series has become but it still has a long, long way to go to catch up with 2k5.

ThinkTank
Oct 23, 2007

I haven't played it in a few years so I guess I can't comment, but as late as NHL 2009 I still felt that that 2K5 had infinitely better AI. The franchise mode was also the deepest outside of EHM, plus it ran remarkably quickly so you could do soak tests out to the year 2105 to see if Gretzky's records ever got broken. They didn't.

That game was drat near perfect, it's a shame that 2K lost so much ground as the years went on.

That, uh, seems rather awesome for EASHL. Sure, I expect them to screw it up big-time but it certainly looks good! Love the new drop-in position picking though.

Hmm, there are some interesting additions and changes. I still don't trust matchmaking. The new OTP setup is probably my favorite change.

The only issue I can see is having to wait a full 3 minutes for every game when it's 5v5. You know you are going to get a constant stream of people who get put in the lobby and quit out because they don't want to take that last remaining position.

Precambrian Video Games

That OTP change is years overdue but loving finally, I guess. Hopefully it applies to drop-in games too.

However, there's no mention of playing multiple EASHL games at once or having multiple squads, nor anything about whether they've changed the pointless grind to Legend 3, both of which would make playing drop-in games unnecessary in the first place. So nuts to that.

Maybe if they have a 'find games with preferred position' feature or something, but that's probably due in NHL '18.

Wouldn't it be nice if they allowed games to start when a majority of people on both teams are ready, so 10 people don't have to wait while the one fuckhead loads his bong before the game starts? There are so many little quality of life tweaks needed in online play (goes for FIFA as well) that are just so obvious.

This isn't a new issue, though. Starting an OTP game takes at least 10 minutes most of the time.

Yeah, I am ok with the front-end of an OTP game taking longer if it means some dipshit doesn't start a quit-cascade 30 seconds in when he picks D and then decides to bail after the puck drop.

I wish I could work at EA writing these articles. You can find so many new ways to put spins on features we already know won't matter.

EA NHL 2015: Now introducing "True Stick Performance" Just like in the real world, a players stick will now block pucks instead of ghosting right through them!

Queue 2 minute video of 5% game play, 95% real NHL footage of players blocking shots/passes with their sticks in slow mo, with another Dropkick Murphys song blaring in the background...for good measure the last 5 seconds of the clip will be a hockey net tied to a rocket being shot into the air and then crashing back down, when it hits the ground a goal horn will go off.)

September 2015, $59.99. Pre-Order Now.

"If a puck is moving with great speed, the puck may slip through the defender’s stick."

Now the pass going through stick blades that we had to suffer up until nhl 13 comes back as a feature.
