It was slightly below freezing. That's when I realized I was finally acclimated to winter :v:

The fun part about that is that an officer can still ticket you for it (even in bad faith, knowing it should be thrown out) and then you have to either haul your rear end back to where you got ticketed or hire a lawyer to represent you in court if you want to challenge it.

So they still do it because they can get away with it and you probably aren't going to deal with the hassle.

IIRC it didn't really toss a con-rod, it tossed all of them, half the block, the heads, and most of the crank in opposite directions.

Really pretty impressive. Overspeeding an engine that big has some serious consequences.

Problem is, this is mostly going to land on the people making diesel tuning equipment and software, which is (as I understand it) mostly the same as the stuff dipshit rednecks use for smoke tunes.

AKA haha, hope you didn't want to buy a diesel tuner anytime soon.

Yes, thus what Powershift just said.

"one position locked up" is a very common failure mode in the winter (shoes freeze to the drum, frozen air lines too sometimes), to the point where changing skidded tires is basically all tire guys do for the first three months of the year. I've only seen 2 single set skids above freezing temps, one was a seized brake cam (and that's the reason most brake cam bushings are nylon these days) and one was the situation IV8 mentioned.

Skidded tires are why I regularly hear tractor trailers driving around with their tires making an incredibly loud whompwhompwhompwhomp sound, right? Because I hear that A LOT.

I've heard of them requiring that you get all maintenance and tires done at their approved shops, too. Which, well, was it Powershift or Interceptor that was running on loving shoddy rear end trailer tires as drives forever and couldn't get the company to do maint work ON THEIR OWN TRUCK without a million tries and harassing them? Imagine what they'll do when it's you leasing the truck and it's "your fault" if it breaks down.

A lot, mostly because the EPA wants you to use R134A, not R124A :v:

(I've never heard of an automotive system that uses 124a, though it does exist. Chlorotetrafluoroethane is 124A, regular old tetrafluoroethane is 134A. The problem is that the firstgens got somewhat crummy getrag g360 manuals and great kingpin 60 front axles, while the second gens got great nv4500hd manuals and the worlds worst balljoint 60 front axle.

Get a 92.5-93 with a manual transmission and a cummins (these specific years get you a better front hub lockout system, if you don't care, any firstgen manual cummins is a fine starting point.) Swap an nv4500hd into it. The best truck dodge never made.

It's in the article but they also realized it'd be frozen to the floor then.

My solution would involve having a trailer shaped hole dug at the dump, refreezing it, and simply backing it into the hole. Maybe take the wheels/tires/brakes/axles/reefer unit off. gently caress it, you guys want the trailer? All yours.

Brakleen with toluene/xylene/ethylbenzene in it should take that off pretty quick. I hate the poo poo because it is full of nasty chemicals but it does work great on grease pencil.

It may also take off the clearcoat, paint, and several layers of plastic under the grease pencil however.

The benefit of 4x4 (or 6x6, or 8x8, or 10x10, or HEMTTxHEMTT, or whatever) is that you can get buried up to the axles on both ends instead of only the rears.

Yep. Anything with a seal that isn't pressure rated needs to be changed out. Shaft seals and the like can usually only handle a few psi before leaking, so even if it has a breather raised pretty high, it doesn't take much water depth to overcome it...
