quote:Economic theory is heavily politicized. If you make a game that implements some kind of economy in the rules, there are going to be people who are vehemently opposed to whatever "ideology" they assume you must hold, on the basis of exactly how your economy rules work. And on the other side, you will likely attract vehement defenders of the correctness of your implemented economy, whether you agree with those defenders' ideologies or not. Hi. I'm Caleb. I wrote Red Markets, and I'm running the KS. Thanks for the discussion so far. It's true that economics are politicized. It's also true that the nonsensical accusations of being simultaneously too socialist and too libertarian are to be expected when you write a game about economics. Finally, it's true that people often mistake any ideology present in a story or character for the ideology of the writer, and that writer's should expect that to happen. I agree, and I'm onboard If there is anyone here concerned by those issues that might otherwise be interested in playing Red Markets one day, I'd be happy to answer any questions they might have. I'm checking the thread regularly. But if you don't listen to the podcast, don't believe people who have played, don't read the KS info, and don't ask questions of the author of the game on a forum you're already frequenting...well, the fact that people dismiss creative work out-of-turn -- with no basis for their assumptions -- I guess that's another truism I have to accept. So, in future, if you think I'm a commie Randian hippy hipster tech-y whatever, please feel free to ask me about it. If you support Red Markets on KS, thank you. And if you don't think Red Markets is a game you'd enjoy, don't support the game on KS, and don't have an ideological problem with people making optional thing you don't enjoy...thank you too. I hope my next project is more to your liking.

clockworkjoe posted:You will also be getting a lot of bonus digital rewards, like all the PDF supplements unlocked by stretch goals, an ebook/audiobook novella, actual play podcasts, and the playtest drafts. People who buy at MSRP later on won't be getting those bonuses. So, basically what other KS who do the same thing do, but for more money. See below for three projects I backed with levels with plenty of goodies and only moderate price jumps. I wonder how many backers aren't realizing they're going to have to pay again when they actually order the book? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1637945166/silent-legions-a-sandbox-horror-rpg/description ($10 from plain pdf to print, $5 from pdf with name mentioned to print (name is mentioned automatically with print), choice of sc or hc) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1552912590/fellowship-a-tabletop-adventure-game/description ($4 from pdf to sc, $8 from pdf to hc) https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1637945166/godbound-a-game-of-divine-heroes/description ($6 from pdf to print, either choice) Ah, I see they are talking about it now in the comments. I have to say from the bit I scanned in the comments that it sounds like the KS is set up like an RPG now style product KS, but with the desire to have an on-hand print run, which is like having your cake and eating it too.

You can't compare every RPG book Kickstarter to each other, like there's a universal standard for how they should be. Every project has different costs and expectations. They have different stretch goals and rewards as well. Red Markets is a unique and brand new game system that has been extensively playtested. Of the three projects you linked, 1 is an Apocalypse World hack and 2 use the same class and level based d20ish system. Comparisons don't really work because of that. You're also way underestimating the bonus rewards that all backers of Red Markets get.
I believe Red Markets offers a great value for backers. It tackles a subject that hasn't really been covered that much in RPGs and it does so in an amazingly thematic yet playable way. It will be released under a Creative Commons license so other designers can take game system and create their own games with it. I understand if you don't want to back it and wait for a commercial release, but I think if you like the idea of the game you should back it now because you will get more bang for your buck.

There should be an option to skip the digital rewards and have the book cost the same as other kickstarters.

(I don't have time to listen to podcasts, and if I did, "someone else's rpg campaign" is near the bottom of my list of things to listen to.) Your fourth "bonus" is literally the bare minimum for a kickstarter RPG from someone without an established track record.

Caleb does have a track record - he launched his own Kickstarter for a horror scenario anthology called No Security. He's also written a campaign for Better Angels called No Soul Left Behind, which was Kickstarted. He freelances for Posthuman Studios and Arc Dream Publishing on a regular basis. Even if you don't want certain bonus rewards, that doesn't mean they don't have value. We have some backers that are just in it for the podcasts. No one can design a Kickstarter that can appeal to all people on all levels. If you want to wait for a commercial release, that's fine.

You've created what I assume are high quality and informative materials that could be really good marketing but gated them behind paying. In that context the decision doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Even if you have a success or two under your belt, it's still pretty rare for a RPG project to not release the draft to all backers during the campaign run. Y'all can go "all you complainers are obviously not our target market" if you want, but it's imo foolish.

In that context the decision doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Are you talking about the podcasts or the beta? Because both of those are free. You can listen development diaries of the whole system on RPPR Game Designer's Workshop (if APs aren't your thing): http://slangdesign.com/rppr/category/game-designer-workshop/ There's a whole campaign already up for free. The SECOND campaign is a backer reward, but the first is available right now: http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/tag/the-brutalists/ I've already answered multiple questions about the game on a reddit AMA: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedMarkets/comments/4alcve/creator_ama/ And detailed a basic primer of the mechanics in the open to anyone updates: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/159466030/red-markets/posts/1585243 If you don't want to buy in, that's great. That's capitalism. I get it and I thank you. Actively criticizing something you have no intention in investing in doesn't make much sense to me, nor does actively spreading misinformation about a game you can't be bothered to google. That's what I'm confused about. It seems like I've personally offended some of you...some how. Not sure how that happened, or what it is you want out of me. For those that are genuinely curious about something, I'm here to answer questions. For those not interested in my wares? Thank you for your consideration and enjoy taking your custom elsewhere. I'm not sure where this in-between, complain-while-never-entering-the-shop impulse is coming from, but I'm not sure what y'all plan to get from it as a discussion. We're nearing 30K and have over 500 backers; I couldn't change the price tiers at this point even if the production budget allowed me to.
