That looks great, but I'm a little hesitant - Dec 2017 feels like a long way away and in my experience with RPG KS projects the further away the due date (i.e. the less ready-to-release it is) the lower the chance it'll come out on time (or at all). Any particular reason the timeline is so far out?

Hi Urban Labyrinth

Here's what I wrote about this on the Risks and Challenges section of the campaign.

"Hebanon Games is an independent operation run by a small crew of talented people. Realistically, illnesses and other personal issues may delay production of the book until conflicts can be resolved or replacements hired. Similarly, if this campaign is an unprecedented, unpredictable success, the fulfillment of stretch goals could further delay the distribution of all rewards to backers.

The campaign has taken this into account by promising pessimistic deadlines in the campaign. It is our sincere hope to have the project complete well-before the dates listed. If for some reason that isn't possible, any delay will be clearly communicated through our updates and various social media accounts. If the campaign succeeds beyond our wildest dreams, completion of the book will remain the singular focus."

So that's my rational: I would rather be early than late. I can promise you a complete set of playable rules by the end of the KS campaign. The system has already been through 10+ playtest drafts, and there is going to be over 225 pages of content ready to go.

But, as I said, that's a lot of stuff to illustrate, and I'll be writing more setting material on top of that. I'm the kind of guy that things early is on time, on time is late, and late is insulting: I wanted to minimize the chances of making myself sound like a hypocrite.

Economic theory is heavily politicized. If you make a game that implements some kind of economy in the rules, there are going to be people who are vehemently opposed to whatever "ideology" they assume you must hold, on the basis of exactly how your economy rules work. And on the other side, you will likely attract vehement defenders of the correctness of your implemented economy, whether you agree with those defenders' ideologies or not.

This factor is probably amplified if the economy is a major, central part of your game. Sorry.

Hi. I'm Caleb. I wrote Red Markets, and I'm running the KS. Thanks for the discussion so far.

It's true that economics are politicized. It's also true that the nonsensical accusations of being simultaneously too socialist and too libertarian are to be expected when you write a game about economics. Finally, it's true that people often mistake any ideology present in a story or character for the ideology of the writer, and that writer's should expect that to happen. I agree, and I'm onboard

If there is anyone here concerned by those issues that might otherwise be interested in playing Red Markets one day, I'd be happy to answer any questions they might have. I'm checking the thread regularly.

But if you don't listen to the podcast, don't believe people who have played, don't read the KS info, and don't ask questions of the author of the game on a forum you're already frequenting...well, the fact that people dismiss creative work out-of-turn -- with no basis for their assumptions -- I guess that's another truism I have to accept.

So, in future, if you think I'm a commie Randian hippy hipster tech-y whatever, please feel free to ask me about it. If you support Red Markets on KS, thank you. And if you don't think Red Markets is a game you'd enjoy, don't support the game on KS, and don't have an ideological problem with people making optional thing you don't enjoy...thank you too. I hope my next project is more to your liking.

You've created what I assume are high quality and informative materials that could be really good marketing but gated them behind paying. In that context the decision doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Are you talking about the podcasts or the beta? Because both of those are free.

You can listen development diaries of the whole system on RPPR Game Designer's Workshop (if APs aren't your thing): http://slangdesign.com/rppr/category/game-designer-workshop/

There's a whole campaign already up for free. The SECOND campaign is a backer reward, but the first is available right now:

I've already answered multiple questions about the game on a reddit AMA:
https://www.reddit.com/r/RedMarkets/comments/4alcve/creator_ama/

And detailed a basic primer of the mechanics in the open to anyone updates:

If you don't want to buy in, that's great. That's capitalism. I get it and I thank you. Actively criticizing something you have no intention in investing in doesn't make much sense to me, nor does actively spreading misinformation about a game you can't be bothered to google. That's what I'm confused about. It seems like I've personally offended some of you...some how. Not sure how that happened, or what it is you want out of me.

For those that are genuinely curious about something, I'm here to answer questions. For those not interested in my wares? Thank you for your consideration and enjoy taking your custom elsewhere. I'm not sure where this in-between, complain-while-never-entering-the-shop impulse is coming from, but I'm not sure what y'all plan to get from it as a discussion. We're nearing 30K and have over 500 backers; I couldn't change the price tiers at this point even if the production budget allowed me to.
