I took advantage of the MM sale to add to the starter Haqq box I picked up a while ago to play locally, but I'm curious, is there any good way to keep the rules straight for a relative newbie? Should I consider literally writing out what each of my models can do in explicit terms?

I'd say familiarize yourself enough with just the core rules to be able to play them mostly unaided and just make a note of pre-reading special rules before you play so you're aware of what they do and double check if you're unsure. If you find keeping a record written down of what things do, then by all means do so. :)

Maybe it's just been a while since I last started a new game (WMH and Malifaux are my main squeezes) but the number of special rules here is tweaking me out a bit :psyduck:

I'll just go as the two of you suggested.

Remind me, HVTs are more stand-ins for objective markers than models one controls, right?

is there a way to switch how models are listed in the army builder, similar to Forward Kommander for WMH or the Malifaux crew builder? Not having everything in a single list seems so goddamn clunky :psyduck:

If I'm primarily interested in the Military Order sectorial of PanO (mostly aesthetics), is it viable and is the PanO half of Icestorm a good start for it?

Viable yes, optimal no. You'll use the fusiliers maybe and the father knight definitely in MO, nothing else from OI is in MO. You could proxy the Akal as a Crusdader brethren easily though.

Hmm. With the terrain and the general usefulness of having Nomads for introing the game to others, I might go ahead and spring for Icestorm. Not too concerned about "optimal" at the moment.

My fave is Haqq, but as I said I like the aesthetic, and I got Joan from buying Angel's book / am interested in the Dire Foes pack with the Haqq/PanO dudes.

Yeah there isn't really much need to limit yourself. Going with a sectorial affects AVA (how many of a profile you can take) and opens up link teams (which are strong, but not overwhelming) at the cost of flexibility. Nothing wrong with starting vanilla, adding knights, then going MO when you have a better understanding of the benefits.

That said, if you like Haqq why not play them?

I...do have Haqq :v:

I was just thinking I'd branch out a little, that's all, particularly since I seem to be picking up some PanO knight stuff incidentally. I'll probably just go vanilla and pick up some Knights.

Those new Naffatun, goddamn.

I'm hoping MM puts a sale on Infinity sometime soon, but between that and the Azra'il, I may have to make an order sooner rather than later.

Can someone explain why people were disappointed that the new Janissary box features a ML instead of a HRL? As far as I can tell they seem to have their pluses and minuses, with maybe the B and range bands being slightly more attractive on the HRL, but the ML having an AP mode?

Pyrolocutus

Pretty much. You could pick up the starter or the Ghulam specialist box and have a Ghulam doctor as well. Or run the Janissary from the starter (or the new Janissary box) as a Janissary doctor. Engineers or hackers are also nice, could proxy one of the Ghulams as a hacker.

I was interested in the Haqq/Ariadna ones as HVTs, but without a mini-only pledge option, I'm not sure I want to drop cash on the books. I don't really have any play options, so it'd just be for fluff, and...eh? $30 for the PDF can suck my nuts.

Because man, I'd really love it, but already have 3 rifle Ghulams from the starter (none of the others, though) and no current need for Yu Jing. I already have Haqq and some USAriadna, and even that's pushing it given how rarely I get to play.

Speaking of CA chat, I recently got a good gift certificate for MM and was looking at picking up some CA. Both the Sith dudes/Batroids as well as the Morats appear the coolest to me. Is the starter box + Xeodron Batroids a good place to start? Any other Morat bits that are dece for picking up?

Pierzak posted:

Which starter box?

If you're going Morat sectorial starting with Morat starter, add Kornak Gazarot and the Hungries. Support pack is always a nice option, so is the Drone Remote box (assuming you have a hacker; assemble as reaction+sensor). Yaogat sniper. 2x chain Daturazi. Some kind of Rasyat (unless you're married to the new design, but if so, few people will give you poo poo for proxying it with a Rodok... whioch are also good).

If you're going vanilla, assuming new vanilla starter with the Umbra: support, drones, hungries. 2x Ikadron. Combi Shrouded. Some kind of Malignos. Speculo Killer. ML Noctifer is a nasty surprise ARO unit, if a bit SWC-heavy. Charontid HMG. Can't tell you anything about the new TAGs yet, but they seem decent on paper.

Yeah, I meant to say the Onyx starter, especially since it seems to come with both Morats and Sith robots. Sounds like Hungries are also a good starter for both Morats and Onyx? Might go Onyx starter, Xeodrons, Hungries to start?

grassy gnoll posted:
