Back when the internet was dial up, we had a second phone line for the computer and my dad had an all-in-one fax/printer/phone hooked up to it, so any calls were 100% wrong numbers or scammers, and my parents gave me cart blanche to go ham on that phone.

When I was 16-ish, I got a call and did something probably very dumb and it was my boss from work “Bob, is that any way to answer the phone?” Turns out he was trying to call my dad for an unrelated need and just called the first listing in the phone book.

Makes sense for my boomer dad. We were always middle class and he always wanted to look better off than we were. I could see him seeing prestige in “look how rich I am, I can afford two phone lines!”
