Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D airs Tuesdays on ABC at 8pm Eastern / 7pm Central. Alternate Thread Title : Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D : Let's Get a Shawarma and Kill Nick Fury !!!!! SPECIAL REQUEST FROM TVIV MODS !!!!! Keep the discussion about the show and directly related topics, not super detailed analysis of half-related comic book events, obsessing over how a character might be Luke Cage, or how the actors are too pretty to be computer scientists. Feel free to talk about comic related topics in the BSS Television Thread. !!!!! SPECIAL REQUEST FROM TVIV MODS !!!!! A sci-fi action comedy/drama created by Joss Whedon that follows Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents for the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division). Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. The series takes place after the events of The Avengers movie, in the same Marvel universe and timeline, so theoretically New York should be a busted up stinking hell hole (insert New Jersey joke here). Appearances by major Marvel characters seem doubtful (at least at first!), but I'm sure we'll get some low rent equivalents -- so strap yourself in for the introduction of "Very Large Angry Man" and "Flying Metal Suit Person" during the first season. Avengers was entertaining, and showed a good mix of action and comedic interplay between the leads, Joss Whedon usually makes for good show (a season or so in), the Pilot had some fun moments and seems promising, plus a bunch of people watched it, so ABC/Disney will probably throw some money at the special effects and action bits at least for a while! Plus the trailer seems pretty impressive, though spoilery for the first episode. The same goes for the Character Profiles, which spoil lots of the jokes. If you're already going to watch, I'd say skip all media and just dive right into the show! 6-Second First Look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFZE3W1SF_Q Official Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PerIAuv27SQ (contains lots of first episode shots, so you may want to skip it!) Watch the Pilot online: ABC Web Player Come on! It'll be fun! Whedon has constructed the building blocks for the show alongside his co-creators, and has said in multiple interviews that he'll continue to be heavily involved with the series (to the extent that he's delaying work on other side projects). The official show runners for the main series are Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who worked with Whedon on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Dollhouse, and The Avengers, and Jeff Bell, who comes in with a bit more established history in T.V. as an Exec. Producer and Writer, having worked on one of Whedon's previous projects, Angel. Joss Whedon The big guy now responsible for the Marvel brand on movies and TV after writing and directing the mega-successful Avengers movie. Most people know him for his long career in TV where he created several cult-favorite sci-fi/fantasy series. Role: Creator, Director (Pilot) Executive Producer, Writer (Ep. 1-3+) Known For: The Avengers (Writer, Director), Cabin in the Woods (Writer), Dollhouse (Creator, Director, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer), Firefly (Creator, Director, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer), Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (Creator, Director, Exec. Producer, Writer), Angel (Creator, Director, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer), Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Creator, Director, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer) Jed Whedon Joss Whedon’s younger brother, married to fellow co-creator Maurissa Tancharoen, got his first big break co-creating and writing on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and then went on to become a staff writer on Dollhouse and Spartacus. This is his first job as show runner, though he was a Co-Producer on Spartacus. Role: Co-Creator, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer Known For: Spartacus: Gods of the Arena / Spartacus: War of the Damned (Co-Producer, Writer), Dollhouse (Writer. S. 1-2), Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (Creator, Writer) Maurissa Tancharoen Married to fellow co-creator Jed Whedon, Maurissa also got her big break as a writer on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog before moving on to become a staff writer on Dollhouse and a writer on Spartacus : Gods of the Arena. This is her first job as show runner, though she was a Co-Producer on Spartacus. Role: Co-Creator, Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer Known For: Spartacus : Gods of the Arena (Writer, Co-Producer), Spartacus: Spartacus: War of the Damned (Co-Producer), Dollhouse (Actor, Writer. S. 1-2), Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (Actor, Writer) Jeffrey Bell Initially best known as show runner and head writer of the last two seasons of Angel, Jeff Bell has been an executive producer on several other big name shows as well, such as Alias and Day Break . He is most likely on the team to provide some day-to-day experience as a show runner / producer / writer. Role: Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer Known For: The Protector (Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1), Harper's Island (Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1), Day Break (Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1), Alias (Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 4), Angel (Exec. Producer, Showrunner, Writer. S. 6-8) Jeph Loeb An established comic book writer on Batman and Superman before heading over to Marvel to work on Hulk, Iron Man, and the Avengers, Loeb was eventually promoted to oversee Marvel's brand as Head of Television for Marvel, where he has served as Executive Producer on all Marvel's animated content. He also has experience producing and writing on live action genre shows. Role: Exec. Producer Known For: Marvel's Animated T.V. shows (Iron Man, Iron Man:Armored Adventures, The Avengers : Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. (Exec. Producer), Heroes (Exec. Producer, Writer - 4 Eps. S. 1-3), Lost (Supervising Producer. S. 3), Smallville (Supervising Producer, Writer - 4 Eps. S. 1-5) With no big stars in the major series roles, Whedon is banking on a combination of established character actors and hopeful newcomers to make something special, much like he's done with his previous series. There are planned appearances by bigger stars in guest roles however, which ABC/Disney may increase in regularity if the series needs a bump at some point in the future. Samuel L. Jackson has mentioned he'd be interested in making a guest appearance, and Cobie Smulders is already signed on for a set of episodes. Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson Agent Coulson has worked for S.H.I.E.L.D under Director Nick Fury for years, appearing in Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, and the Avengers as the major recruiter of superheroes to the Avengers Initiative. When last we saw Agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers movie, he was lying dead on the deck of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier after Loki shish kabobbed him from behind with the golden staff of ultimate power (not a euphemism). Though Coulson remembers recovering from his wounds during a S.H.I.E.L.D. funded vacation on a beach in Tahiti, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Dr. Streiten seem to be hiding the true secret behind Coulson's miraculous recovery… For now, Coulson focuses on his job heading the division's field operations, and he's eager to get to work forming a specialized team of individuals to brave the post-Battle of New York world. He believes this small team of regular people, when working together, can make just as much of a difference as those with super powers. (earnest face) Character Profile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3aYXim7AEw Actor Bio: Clark Gregg got his big break playing Agent Coulson in the Marvel movie series, though he's been working as an established character actor since the 80's. You may have seen him in such diverse roles as FBI Agent, Cop, Cop's Partner, Federal Agent in a different Department, or Kid's Dad (possibly ex-cop). Where you might have seen him before: Pretty much every Marvel movie since Iron Man, The New Adventures of Old Christine (Richard Campbell - not a cop?), The Shield (William Faulks - serial rapist turned serial killer), The West Wing (FBI Special Agent Michael Casper - FBI Agent), The Commish (Tom Cannon - gonna guess some kind of Agent of something) Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May Agent May is an expert pilot and martial artist (shocking twist!). Though she was once a legend in the agency, she mysteriously resigned herself to a quiet desk job in recent years. She's been spending her time filing papers in the dark recesses of S.H.I.E.L.D. operations and doesn't seem too pleased to be back in the action as part of Coulson's team. Character Profile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQsRW4gtt0E Actor Bio: Ming-Na Wen is probably the best known of the actors starring as series regulars, having had a major role on several established shows in the past. Also apparently she plays Finn's Mom on Adventure Time? Soooo….. Where you might have seen her before: Eureka (U.S. Senator Michaela Wen), SGU : Stargate Universe (Camile Wray), ER (Dr. Jing-mei "Deb" Chen), Mulan (Mulan) Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward Agent Ward is black ops specialist trained in combat and espionage, skilled with a gun and always eager to use it, but likely to trip over his tongue when trying to get his point across. Gruff, antisocial, but always cool under fire and fiercely loyal, he would give his life for S.H.I.E.L.D. Also bakes a mean double-double chocolate fudge brownie. Character Profile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYZ_zf2Z54Q Actor Bio: Dalton is fairly new to the T.V. scene - Whedon is banking he'll break out as a star with his mix of charm and awkwardness in the role of Agent Ward. Where you might have seen him before: A few one-shot roles on T.V. shows I cannot be bothered to paste urls for. But look at that chin! Chloe Bennet as Skye Skye is a civilian and a new recruit to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency, having been exposed by Coulson's team as the face behind the activist group called the Rising Tide. The Rising Tide sought to reveal the truth behind the world of super heroes and villains, exposing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secret operations to the world at large. A hyper intelligent computer hacker with a mysterious past, Skye unofficially joined Coulson's team after working with them to bring a man not named Luke Cage to justice after his powers spiraled out of control. Character Profile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CxotaKxXZ4 Actor Bio: Originally getting her start as a singer, Bennet lived and recorded songs in China until she nabbed a role a co-host of the Teen Nick television show The Nightlife. (Ted Koppel looks great with crimped bangs! Wait, that's Nightline…). Recently she's been appearing in a regular role on Nashville, as Hailey (Koppel was originally signed on for the role but had to leave after the pilot because of prior commitments) Where you might have seen her before: Pretty sure I mentioned Nashville (Hailey)… Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz Leo Fitz is a brilliant but socially awkward engineer (whodathunkit?), specializing in weapons technology. Fitz is always on the same wavelength as his research partner, Jemma Simmons -- the two of them are an inseparable pair, though he's a little green, having never been in the field before. Character Bio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRaQ9or7mj0 Actor Bio: Caestecker started as a child actor, and is probably best known for his roles on several BBC series, though he's nabbed a role in the movie adaptation of Irvine Welsh's "Filth", as well as the lead role in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, "How to Catch a Monster" - a sequel to "How to Catch a Dragon" set in the gritty streets of L.A., where an awkward, brooding dragon falls in love with his neighbor after burning a man alive in an elevator. Where you might have seen him before: Young James Herriot (James Herriot), The Fades (Paul), Coronation Street (Adam Barlow) Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons Genius bio-chemist Jemma Simmons is a rising star in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s research division along with her inseparable partner, Leo Fitz. The two are usually found bickering, but they are always found together. Simmons has a love for science and a wide-eyed enthusiasm for the world that makes this opportunity to work in the field the adventure of a lifetime. (Whedon will probably kill her in the season finale…) Character Bio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRaQ9or7mj0 (same as Fitz's) Actor Bio: Another English transplant, Henstridge booked a role in a J.J. Abrams / One Tree Hill creator pilot that no one cares about, before starring in a movie with Sylvester Stallone set to release in 2014 that no one's going to see. So, the sky's the future! Where you might have seen her before: Nope. Whedon has assembled what appears to be, at least on paper, a fairly solid team of T.V. writers with a history in sci-fi, genre, and action shows to fill out the writing staff. Paul Zbyszewski Known For: Hawaii Five-O (Co-Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1-3), Lost (Co-Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 5-6), Day Break (Creator, Co-Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1) Monica Breen Known For: Revolution (Co-Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 1-2), Fringe (Co-Exec. Producer, Writer. S. 3-4), Lost (Supervising Producer, Writer. S. 3), Alias (Supervising Producer, Writer. S. 3-5), Charmed (Co-Producer, Writer. S. 4-6) Brent Fletcher Known For: Spartacus : Gods of the Arena (Co-Producer, Writer), Spartacus: Spartacus: War of the Damned (Co-Producer, Writer), Friday Night Lights (Writer. 1 Ep.), Lost (Writer. 1 Ep.), Angel (Writer. 1 Ep.) Lauren LeFranc Known For: Hemlock Grove (Co-Producer - Series, Writer. 1 Ep.), Chuck (Writer. S. 3-5), My Own Worst Enemy (Writer. S. 1) Rafe Judkins Known For: Hemlock Grove (Co-Producer - Series, Writer. 1 Ep.), Chuck (Writer. S. 3-5), My Own Worst Enemy (Writer. S. 1), Survivor : Guatemala (Contestant. S. 11) Shalisha Francis Known For: Castle (Story Editor, Writer. S. 3-6) Didn't realize this until now, but Whedon nabbed a great name to handle the music duties for the series -- though, at least from the Pilot, it appears he's playing with a more established, generic-superhero-y music style. Hopefully some unique themes will come out as the series develops. Bear McCreary Established as one of the major go-to guys for sci-fi / fantasy TV music scores, you probably know McCreary best for his amaze-balls work on Battlestar Galactica. Dat music! Role: Music Composer Known For: The Walking Dead (Composer), Eureka (Composer), Human Target (Composer), Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Composer), Battlestar Galactica (Composer), 8,000 other things. The reviews are coming in positive, though not super excited glowing amazing. Most seem to think its a solid start that has room to grow to its full potential. Mostly they seem to focus on the fact that it's not a copy of the Avengers, but still retains Whedon's fun, witty style while investigating the interesting aspects of the characters and universe. Running late, so these snippets are shamelessly stolen from A.I.C.N., but with correct links. Sepinwall seems to have the most negative review. Alan Sepinwall: ... And how is it? It's... okay — quippy in that pleasingly distinctive Joss Whedon way, with a few intriguing ideas about life in a superhero world, but with a cheap look and mostly bland supporting characters ... All told, it's a much more promising start to things than the first episode of "Dollhouse," a show where Whedon, Whedon and Tancharoen struggled to write standalone procedural stories ... If it becomes clear a few episodes in that the designed-by-committee "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is fundamentally flawed, will Whedon have the same latitude to turn it into something wildly different, but better? Or will it stay in the same pleasant but unremarkable form it arrives in tonight? New York Times: ... polished, fast-moving and at least moderately entertaining, which is no surprise, given that it was directed by the gifted storyteller Joss Whedon … Mr. Gregg hits the same appealing note of wry authority that he struck in “The Avengers” (it’s not yet clear whether he has any others), and the newcomer Brett Dalton (“Killing Lincoln”) shows some charm as a Bond-style operative. Joss Whedon, meanwhile, has fun with the show’s obligatory jabs of self-awareness. The mishmash nature of the story, strained together from decades of comics, movies and TV shows, is acknowledged when a team member says that the agency’s latest nemesis seems to have been created by throwing into a blender every superhero origin — 1940s serum, gamma radiation, alien artifacts. … L.A. Times: ... The pilot is nowhere near as in-your-face as one might think, which is probably a good thing; television can do many things but it cannot out-blockbuster a blockbuster. Whedon seems willing and able to find another, still intriguing but lower-key way. In Gregg's Coulson, he has a superpower adjacent Everyman who may be able to make the television series just as good, in its own way, as the film franchise. Chicago-Sun Times: ... the show’s pricey-looking pilot caters to both comic book geeks and mainstream viewers with its witty writing and special effects. … San Francisco Chronicle: ... [expect] the same kind of careful content balance Joss Whedon employed when he wrought "Buffy the Vampire Slayer": Just enough geeky insider stuff to keep the fan-boys from grousing too much, but an even bigger portion of well-written action, drama, humor and intricate plot details to hook viewers who gave up comic books before Steve Canyon was grounded. … The plot summary doesn't begin to do justice to why the show is so appealing. For one thing, you have to experience the dry humor that enlivens the dialogue and keeps it from tumbling over into the pseudo-pompous pronouncement style of lesser fantasy shows. … "S.H.I.E.L.D." is the anti-"Homeland," in a way: It's all about making TV fun again. … Washington Post: ... launches with a plucky, adventuresome and remarkably non-pretentious pilot episode, but if you haven’t been reading Marvel Comics lately (or at all — Stan Lee first dreamed up a S.H.I.E.L.D. story line in 1965), then the show can feel somewhat exclusionary and, frankly, a little too cornball and cutesy about its own geekiness. … Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: ... a terrifically entertaining action-adventure hour that pays dividends for "Avengers" fanboys/girls but isn't so insular that the uninitiated will be baffled. And "SHIELD" is lighter, funnier and more character driven than "Avengers." … Boston Herald: The most-buzzed-about TV show of fall exceeds the hype. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” from “Marvel’s The Avengers” director Joss Whedon (he directed and co-wrote the pilot), soars with eye-popping stunts, dramatic swerves and cheeky dialogue. … Boston Globe: ... The pilot suggests an ability to shift from the comedic to the dramatic without much fear of whiplash, which is perfect, as that has been Whedon’s sweet spot since his “Buffy” days. A signal to that balance comes early, with a nice bit of Whedonesque silly business in the introduction of Coulson, whom Gregg plays with wry understatement. … Huffngton Post TV: ... Zippy. That's my one-word description of the energetic pilot … USA Today: ... Anyone familiar with Whedon's TV work will be happy to see some of his best traits on display: the sideways humor that surprises while staying true to plot and character; the efforts to ground the fantasy in real-world emotion; the belief that events in past episodes (and movies) must have repercussions in the present. … Variety: ... Purists will no doubt debate whether the device of reviving Coulson is explained satisfactorily, but given what Gregg brings to the party with his wry comedic timing and as the strongest connection to the movies, the impulse can probably be forgiven. … Hollywood Reporter: ... has a nice combination of Whedonesque humor and entertaining action. It's a fun hour and calling it "good but not great" has more to do with expectations in the wake of the Marvel movies than anything else. … Palooka fucked around with this message at 04:04 on Oct 24, 2013 |

I saw last week's episode and it was... okay. It was basically "bland, pretty whitish people do spy stuff." Which is... okay. But I'm kind of tired of okay, so I think I'll be giving this one a miss. I might catch back up with it once Sleepy Hollow, AHS: Coven and Haven have run their course, but I kind of doubt it.

For a top secret spy agency, SHIELD sure has a lot of marked cars.

NotALizardman posted:Hm. So I guess SHIELD allows people with superhuman powers to keep living their lives, so long as they don't abuse said powers? Neat. I was actually wondering about that. Well Fury basically said that at the end of Avengers. He let them all go do whatever. Also this guy is the main character from Watch_Dogs.

One thing this show could use is more restraint with the soundtrack. We don't need music all the time, Bear.

Am I recalling this wrong, or did the files that he pulled the gridlock from all end in the file type .mp4?

Solaris Knight posted:Scorch? Really? REALLY? I wonder if all the other fire-type code names are actual Marvel characters and they're trying to avoid overlap. The X-Men alone must have at least 50 fire-based guys, all with one-word names like that.

I am wondering if there are other shows on Tuesdays. If so, happy for them. Stuck now with this plot.

Codependent Poster posted:Well Fury basically said that at the end of Avengers. He let them all go do whatever. Well, the Avengers saved the world, two of them are famous, one is an actual God and another is an avatar of destruction. I don't think Fury could detain them even if he wanted to. I was more curious about what would happen to the various, random superhumans SHIELD came across. And apparently, as long as they aren't loving poo poo up they get to sign a form and go on their way. Which is neat. Also: "Gridlock Protocol"
