A sci-fi action comedy/drama created by Joss Whedon that follows Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents for the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division). Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. The series takes place after the events of The Avengers movie, in the same Marvel universe and timeline, so theoretically New York should be a busted up stinking hell hole (insert New Jersey joke here). Appearances by major Marvel characters seem doubtful (at least at first!), but I'm sure we'll get some low rent equivalents -- so strap yourself in for the introduction of "Very Large Angry Man" and "Flying Metal Suit Person" during the first season.  Avengers was entertaining, and showed a good mix of action and comedic interplay between the leads, Joss Whedon usually makes for good show (a season or so in), the Pilot had some fun moments and seems promising, plus a bunch of people watched it, so ABC/Disney will probably throw some money at the special effects and action bits at least for a while! Plus the trailer seems pretty impressive, though spoilery for the first episode. The same goes for the Character Profiles, which spoil lots of the jokes. Jackson has mentioned he'd be interested in making a guest appearance, and Cobie Smulders is already signed on for a set of episodes.  Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson Agent Coulson has worked for S.H.I.E.L.D under Director Nick Fury for years, appearing in Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, and the Avengers as the major recruiter of superheroes to the Avengers Initiative. When last we saw Agent Phil Coulson in The Avengers movie, he was lying dead on the deck of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier after Loki shish kabobbed him from behind with the golden staff of ultimate power (not a euphemism). Though Coulson remembers recovering from his wounds during a S.H.I.E.L.D. funded vacation on a beach in Tahiti, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill and Dr. Streiten seem to be hiding the true secret behind Coulson's miraculous recovery… For now, Coulson focuses on his job heading the division's field operations, and he's eager to get to work forming a specialized team of individuals to brave the post-Battle of New York world. He believes this small team of regular people, when working together, can make just as much of a difference as those with super powers. Gruff, antisocial, but always cool under fire and fiercely loyal, he would give his life for S.H.I.E.L.D. Also bakes a mean double-double chocolate fudge brownie. Chloe Bennet as Skye Skye is a civilian and a new recruit to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency, having been exposed by Coulson's team as the face behind the activist group called the Rising Tide. The Rising Tide sought to reveal the truth behind the world of super heroes and villains, exposing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secret operations to the world at large. A hyper intelligent computer hacker with a mysterious past, Skye unofficially joined Coulson's team after working with them to bring a man not named Luke Cage to justice after his powers spiraled out of control. The two are usually found bickering, but they are always found together. Simmons has a love for science and a wide-eyed enthusiasm for the world that makes this opportunity to work in the field the adventure of a lifetime. Abrams / One Tree Hill creator pilot that no one cares about, before starring in a movie with Sylvester Stallone set to release in 2014 that no one's going to see. So, the sky's the future! Bear McCreary Established as one of the major go-to guys for sci-fi / fantasy TV music scores, you probably know McCreary best for his amaze-balls work on Battlestar Galactica. Dat music! Role: Music Composer Known For: The Walking Dead (Composer), Eureka (Composer), Human Target (Composer), Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Composer), Battlestar Galactica (Composer), 8,000 other things.  The reviews are coming in positive, though not super excited glowing amazing. Most seem to think its a solid start that has room to grow to its full potential. Mostly they seem to focus on the fact that it's not a copy of the Avengers, but still retains Whedon's fun, witty style while investigating the interesting aspects of the characters and universe. Running late, so these snippets are shamelessly stolen from A.I.C.N., but with correct links. Sepinwall seems to have the most negative review. Alan Sepinwall: ... And how is it? It's... okay — quippy in that pleasingly distinctive Joss Whedon way, with a few intriguing ideas about life in a superhero world, but with a cheap look and mostly bland supporting characters ... All told, it's a much more promising start to things than the first episode of "Dollhouse," a show where Whedon, Whedon and Tancharoen struggled to write standalone procedural stories ... If it becomes clear a few episodes in that the designed-by-committee "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." is fundamentally flawed, will Whedon have the same latitude to turn it into something wildly different, but better? Or will it stay in the same pleasant but unremarkable form it arrives in tonight? Whedon seems willing and able to find another, still intriguing but lower-key way. In Gregg's Coulson, he has a superpower adjacent Everyman who may be able to make the television series just as good, in its own way, as the film franchise. Chicago-Sun Times: ... the show’s pricey-looking pilot caters to both comic book geeks and mainstream viewers with its witty writing and special effects. … San Francisco Chronicle: ... [expect] the same kind of careful content balance Joss Whedon employed when he wrought "Buffy the Vampire Slayer": Just enough geeky insider stuff to keep the fan-boys from grousing too much, but an even bigger portion of well-written action, drama, humor and intricate plot details to hook viewers who gave up comic books before Steve Canyon was grounded. … The plot summary doesn't begin to do justice to why the show is so appealing. For one thing, you have to experience the dry humor that enlivens the dialogue and keeps it from tumbling over into the pseudo-pompous pronouncement style of lesser fantasy shows. … "S.H.I.E.L.D." is the anti-"Homeland," in a way: It's all about making TV fun again. … Washington Post: ... launches with a plucky, adventuresome and remarkably non-pretentious pilot episode, but if you haven’t been reading Marvel Comics lately (or at all — Stan Lee first dreamed up a S.H.I.E.L.D. story line in 1965), then the show can feel somewhat exclusionary and, frankly, a little too cornball and cutesy about its own geekiness. … Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: ... a terrifically entertaining action-adventure hour that pays dividends for "Avengers" fanboys/girls but isn't so insular that the uninitiated will be baffled. And "SHIELD" is lighter, funnier and more character driven than "Avengers." … Boston Herald: The most-buzzed-about TV show of fall exceeds the hype. “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” from “Marvel’s The Avengers” director Joss Whedon (he directed and co-wrote the pilot), soars with eye-popping stunts, dramatic swerves and cheeky dialogue. … Boston Globe: ... The pilot suggests an ability to shift from the comedic to the dramatic without much fear of whiplash, which is perfect, as that has been Whedon’s sweet spot since his “Buffy” days. A signal to that balance comes early, with a nice bit of Whedonesque silly business in the introduction of Coulson, whom Gregg plays with wry understatement. … Huffngton Post TV: ... Zippy. That's my one-word description of the energetic pilot … USA Today: ... Anyone familiar with Whedon's TV work will be happy to see some of his best traits on display: the sideways humor that surprises while staying true to plot and character; the efforts to ground the fantasy in real-world emotion; the belief that events in past episodes (and movies) must have repercussions in the present. … Variety: ... Purists will no doubt debate whether the device of reviving Coulson is explained satisfactorily, but given what Gregg brings to the party with his wry comedic timing and as the strongest connection to the movies, the impulse can probably be forgiven. … Hollywood Reporter: ... has a nice combination of Whedonesque humor and entertaining action. Directed by David Straiton Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents travel to Peru to investigate an object of unknown origin, codenamed 0-8-4. But when he runs into Comandante Camilla Reyes, more than just sparks fly at 30,000 feet. Ratings (Live+1 Day DVR): 8.66m (#6) / 3.26 in 18-49 - (#3). Ratings (Live+3 Day DVR) : 12.07m (+3.41m) / 4.92 in 18-49 - (+1.66). 10/08/13 - Ep. 3 - "The Asset" - Written by Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen. Directed by Milan Cheylov When the brilliant scientist Dr. Franklin Hall is kidnapped, Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents must race against the clock to locate him. Skye is their only way in -- pushing the team to their limits when the entire plan turns upside-down. Ratings (Live+1 Day DVR): 7.87m (#5) / 2.9 in 18-49 - (#2). Though this is another (smaller) drop, the 18-49 rating still more than doubles what the show in the same slot held last year, so it's a gain for ABC -- hence the recent season 2 order. Ratings (Live+3 Day DVR) : 11.0 (+3.13m) / 4.4 in 18-49 - (+1.5). With Live +3, S.H.I.E.L.D. grabs the #1 spot for the night. 10/15/13 - Ep. 4 - "Eye Spy" - Written by Jeffrey Bell. Directed by Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres from Star Trek: Voyager) Agent Coulson and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team try to track down a mysterious woman who has single-handedly committed numerous high-stakes heists. But when the woman’s identity is revealed, a troubling secret stands to ruin Coulson. Ratings (Live+1 Day DVR): 7.85m (#5) / 2.8 in 18-49 - (#3). Looks like the numbers have leveled out, and can be expected to hold somewhere around here, though it will be interesting to see where the +3 numbers go. 10/22/13 - Ep. 5 - "Girl in the Flower Dress" - Written by Brent Fletcher. Directed by Jesse Bochco. An elusive girl in a flower dress may hold the key to the mystery that brings Coulson and team to Asia to rescue a young man with an unusual and dangerous power; and Skye has a secret that jeopardizes her relationship with the team right when they need her most. Ratings (Live+1 Day DVR): 7.39m (#5) / 2.7 in 18-49 - (#3). 11/05/13 - Ep. 6 - "FZZT" - Written by Paul Zbyszewski. Directed by Vincent Misiano. When floating bodies turn up, Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D must hunt down an elusive killer. No one is safe--not even the team. Ratings (Live+1 Day DVR): 7.03m (#5) / 2.5 in 18-49 - (#3). 11/12/13 - Ep. 7 - "The Hub" - Written by Rafe Judkins and Lauren LeFranc. As they get closer to the truth, startling secrets are revealed and an unexpected twist threatens the team. Coulson uncovers vital information about the mystery of his death, but, with Centipede out for blood, this knowledge may come at the cost of one of the team. I saw last week's episode and it was... okay. It was basically "bland, pretty whitish people do spy stuff." Which is... okay. But I'm kind of tired of okay, so I think I'll be giving this one a miss. I might catch back up with it once Sleepy Hollow, AHS: Coven and Haven have run their course, but I kind of doubt it.

I was more curious about what would happen to the various, random superhumans SHIELD came across. And apparently, as long as they aren't loving poo poo up they get to sign a form and go on their way.
