If you already have a couple 99s, with level 75 gear, how hard is it to get the new, good gear? Could you then plow through the ToAU and WoTG expansions solo?

I did most of WotG solo as a 99 NIN in mostly abyssea gear, and there are still points that are really god drat frustrating without a WHM for the sole reason that you have idiot NPC companions for certain missions that aren't allowed to die and do their best to pull every single mob they can onto them. DNC sub usually isn't enough to keep them alive so I would fail fights that I could've breezed through if they weren't there.

ToAU I had completed way back at 75 cap but I imagine it is easy up to the final boss.

CoP is definitely a push over, even though you didn't mention it. I think the only thing that is still annoying to solo are the 4 pots in Garden of Ru'hmet because of the AoE magic spam.

I'm phone posting so it's tough to explain exactly.

From what I remember looking at the wiki, it shows WotG Cait Sith as a 2 part mission. Mission 1 is Boy and Beast, Mission 2 is a NM ??? Spawn I don't remember the name.

When I check with the quest giving NPCs and follow up NPCs nothing happens. If I start from step 1, and progress through nothing happens. If I go to the ???s, I get "nothing out of the ordinary here."

If I do the next quest after WotG Cait Sith, it doesn't start.

The ffxiclopedia wiki shows that the rewards are:
Mission 1: Sterling Star
Mission 2: Golden Star

I show those in my Temp Key Item inventory. There is 1 key item I do not have that is the Military Script, BUT that item is also sellable to a NPC. I do not know if there is a way to find out if I sold it.

Best information I can offer is check your completed quests list (quests, not mission) for shadowreign areas and see if you have completed Wrath of the Griffon. If you haven't that's why you can't progress. If you have and you still can't progress it sounds like a bug, you may want to try doing the Bastok or Windurst questlines to advance. It doesn't matter which nation questline you advance you just have to advance one of them.

Checking my logs I completed the previous missions under Bastok.

I guess changing affiliation that way doesn't also change it via story line.

Your affiliation doesn't matter, you can do all three country's questlines if you want, and you only need to advance one of them to proceed in WotG. Affiliation only matters for campaign related things.

Records of Eminence Beginner Missions get you a handful of trusts, otherwise you get trusts from Log-In points or from talking to certain NPCs after reaching a certain progress point in missions. Vendors generally don't sell Trust scrolls unless there is an Alter-Ego Extravaganza event going on which I think happens 4 times a year or so. Which kind of sucks since some of the extravaganza event trusts are really good, like Amchuchu. Check bg-wiki for a complete list of trusts and where to obtain them.

Also join a Unity to get your Unity leader as a trust. Apururu and Yoran-Oran are generally chosen because they're really good healers.

They added these special shields for crafters that require a shitload of time, effort, and items to obtain and fetich pieces are one of the potential ingredients for a late stage synth for it. I only know from what I've skimmed on the bg wiki page for the shields but you probably need thousands of the things.

Yeah Semih will start using Sidewinder in like the 30s and maybe even earlier, which will shred whatever you're killing at that level.

At later levels, probably around the 50 mark, she'll get access to a unique WS that is AoE, so you might want to be careful where you use her from that point on unless you're prepared to deal with a bunch of adds.

It feels like Escha with five extra layers of complexity but I still can't really wrap my head around it. The wiki is informative but difficult (for me at least) to follow. Are there any good visual guides out there?

Also, is Abyssea basically deprecated content? A lot of RoEs say 'non-Abyssea areas' and the XP I was getting at-level in one was garbage.

I get that Abyssea was unpopular, but was it that bad beyond just nuking the economy and replacing HNM items people fought for over seven years with the equivalent of welfare greens?

I can't imagine anything being worse than the first year of WotG. At least people engaged with Abyssea. People basically looked at WotG and went back to Whitegate to do Nyzul/Einherjar.

Abyssea was unpopular? I loved it, and it was extremely active when it was current content. Abyssea was also THE way to level before Adoulin and Trusts came out. It's just totally irrelevant now unless you want to make an Empyrean Weapon.

Edit: I guess to kind of answer your question it would be "don't worry about it" unless you want to do the aforementioned Emp grind in which case I'd have to ask why. Abyssea is not as complex as it seems but like everything in FFXI there are a lot of layers to it. It's useless for EXP now and there is no item level gear except for reforged Empyrean armor (which I think you can just reforge the NQ and not have to go through the Abyssea upgrade process anyway).

Anyway, the reason I was asking was because there are some accessories from there that are still good, and I either can't figure out how to get most ilvl-era gear solo or need a group for it, so I thought I'd start more toward the bottom and work up.

I looked at the upcoming March campaign and wow, that's pretty dull. Are the campaign bonuses more like February or March in terms of how much gets boosted?

I don't know about all that, but Abyssea did coincide with the level cap increase beyond 75. However, Abyssea was over and done with by the time the cap increased to 95. I don't know if you can blame Abyssea specifically for that stuff since raising the level cap was bound to shake things up. I think the problem was that Abyssea didn't play anything like the stuff outside it, so once players had to move on from Abyssea it was a shock to a lot of people that suddenly their job wasn't functioning the same way anymore. I remember the Abyssea era was dominated by jobs like WAR, NIN, and MNK, with NIN falling completely out of favor once Abyssea ended.

Keep doing Rhapsodies of Vana'diel as much as you can manage by yourself or ask for help for the NMs since an i119 person can blow them up for you. More Rhapsody key items means more exp bonuses that keep stacking. If you're past level 50 you should be able to get up to Siren solo and then ask someone to kill Siren for you (or hell, I can do it) and that should net you another KI.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

Yes mission progress in other storylines is required for Rhapsody but with trusts it's not at all difficult to meet those requirements. The only thing I'll say for Shadow Lord is make sure you have magic damage since second phase he will switch between physical/magical immunity, otherwise he's a total pushover. I think it's reasonable to make enough progress in CoP/ToAU/WotG to continue Rhapsody at your level but I'd probably stop once you unlock Escha - Ru'aun unless you have a level cap person willing to carry you through it.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

The problem I have with WotG is that the cutscenes are much longer than anything previously, the zones are mostly recycled and some made more frustrating to navigate (Jugner Forest), and many of the missions are just cutscene after cutscene and you travelling between two points over and over again. An example case is the Bastok quest where you have to go to a spot in Vunkerl to chase down an enemy, then they send you back to Bastok Markets to get a key item before you then have to return to the same drat spot to actually do the battle. There are several other situations that are very similar. It is much more tolerable now due to having mounts and home point warps, but it's still way too long.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

So long as you've cleared a battlefield before, you can enter it again. The person on the mission just has to initiate the battle. Also any key item requirements or whatever are waived if you've already cleared it.

A lot of servers are probably like this. The main benefit of Asura is the auction house actually being stocked, which is pretty important even if a lot of Asura players are not uh ideal companions.

Edit: Also if you need help getting some entry gear my main is pretty stacked now so I can help you out, since I'm doing a lot poo poo solo to start gearing my alt. Just message me on discord or something.

Is the supposed elitism and bot spam really that bad?

Not making a character on Asura means you won't have any one to group with more often than not and a dead economy/auction house. It's just not worth making a character on another server, trust me, my original characters were all on Shiva since 2004 and I transferred to Asura for the auction house alone.

People like to complain about Asura for any reason and blame it for an awful community but I got news for you: This is what the FFXI community was always like, just now with more merc spam. Yeah the zones in FFXI really feel like the wilderness, with all the dangers that go with it. No civilization for miles except for maybe a dinky little outpost and if the wildlife doesn't maul you you could get attacked by a passing goblin bandit. Classic WoW kind of had that feeling at times, except the danger was usually from other players in a PvP context. You'll never see that kind of poo poo again though.

Like, I'm following the 1-119 guide on the wiki and it helps but it's also not clear when things unlock. I need to meet Gilgamesh to unlock support jobs and that requires the Rhapsodies of Vanadiel stuff but it also says that doesn't unlock until I'm basically done with my city missions? I also have no idea at what point different expansions unlock anymore so when I hit 30 I don't much know what is available to me right away. They've removed the subjob/main job specific level requirements right, so it's just get any job to 30 and go do the quest?

Rhapsodies is a bit convoluted as you need to progress other storylines along with it. The subjob unlock should be doable the moment you get to either Selbina or Mhaura, I think you only need to be level 5 and zone into one of the main cities to get the Rhapsodies "starting" cutscene. Once you unlock subjobs and get Rhapsody in White you need to start advancing city missions and then eventually other plotlines.

I do recommend following Rhapsodies as you level up to a certain point. Basically everything up to the Siren fight is doable below level cap, then you'll either need help or wait until you're 99 to continue. The Rhapsody key items are incredibly useful for speeding up leveling.

Abyssea doesn't give exp like other zones do, it's some weird other system where killing the same named enemy gradually increases your exp per kill until it caps out. That's why almost every RoE objective where you have to kill exp yielding enemies it says "outside of Abyssea".

Wings of the Goddess is fine, I guess. The issue is more it's the kind of thing you only want to do once, so if you make a new character/account and have to do it again... it wears out its welcome fast. I think it's fine on your first time through.

BUT! Do not, under any circumstances, do the Bastok storyline in Wings unless you have help. There's an escort mission involved that is extremely hard to solo, even at item level. San'doria is the easiest but it kind of sucks plot-wise. Windurst is in-between in difficulty and is pretty interesting to boot.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

It's a shame because I really like the Bastok Wings storyline. I did manage to solo the escort quest so it's not impossible but it's definitely not something all jobs can reasonably do and there was still a degree of luck involved. To make matters worse, failing it means you have to wait a game day to try again and I must have failed the mission at least 4 times.

Kongming

Dancer and Rune are easy with mounts. Ninja you have to kill NMs and you'll need sneak/invis but the NMs are very weak the only issue is there are three of them so you might get got at level 30 before your trusts can help you. Whenever I made a new character I would just take WAR to 50 first and do LB1 and 2 and then level whatever I actually wanted to level. 50 WAR can unlock any job with ease and can do a good chunk of the early Rhapsody missions (basically everything up to Siren) and get some of the Key Items.

Edit: Also WAR can be subbed to any melee and it will serve you well. THF/WAR is perfectly fine for leveling.

A prevalent guide writer, Spicyryan, has a grudge against how many mercs and bots there are on Asura, and so in his guides directs people away from the server. Some prominent FFXIV content creators presumably saw this advice and took it at face value, and thus started advising others to go elsewhere too.

The thing is, other servers don't actually have more people playing, there's just fewer bots / mercs in chat polluting things. Asura is still the server with the highest active player base, and while there is a lot of chaff to filter out of chat (either with add-ons or the in-game chat filter), the bots / mercs very rarely directly interfere with gameplay.

To add on to this, the bots also provide a service for the pointlessly grindy poo poo you don't want to do anyway (Job Points/Master levels) so it's a net benefit to have them around.
