JcDent posted:Some more questions about stuff and poo poo My dad was in Egypt from late '39 on. Royal Engineers - 8th Army. According to him, as the front lines moved back and forth it would come as no surprise to find unarmed bodies dumped in the wadis (sp?). Both sides did it. He explained that being detailed to escort prisoners to the rear meant you were going to be separated from your Unit/Company. Things moved fast, it gets tricky in the desert real quick. A much more prudent approach was to take your charges over the first rise and hose them. Then double time back to yer boys, any Q's - they tried to escape ......Honest. He mentioned it was crazy, nobody knew where the lines were. People got lost all the time. Apparently people like my dad. I'm going from a terribly faulty memory, but I'm sure he told us this story ......... Maybe I got it from a movie tho.? They had stopped their truck in the middle of nowhere, trying to figure where the gently caress they were. Soon they notice a dust column heading in their direction. They're only a few dudes in a truck, a couple of rifles onboard, that's it. So they sit and wait. A convoy of about ten trucks go high-ballin' past them. Full of Germans, loaded for bear. He should have died. They waved at him. So I guess - Who knows.

I love this thread. I loving soak this poo poo up. Eastern Front chat. I'm sure I read somewhere that the Very First thing any Soviet soldiers would do when advancing on Ze Germans would be to strip the bodies of the sweet, sweet pharmacutical speed that the oh-so-neutral Swiss provided to Reich #3. Apparently the bogus Russian crank was surprisingly teeth-grindingly awful, leading to a loving huge bump in performance when the boys got a taste of the good stuff. Did I just make that up?

My dad was in the British 8th Army as an Engineer. Called up from his job at British Tobacco, (he was reserves I believe) got trained and then shipped out late '39. His troop ship was chugging across the Atlantic, heading for somewhere in the Pacific when it was Full Stop, turn around, aim for Alexandria. He was involved all the way through Italy. I've got a bunch of pic's, old Palestine, dead tanks, a lot of little cemeteries. He only had funny stories for us kids, but I heard other tales while overhearing the grown-ups... not as heroic, sad scary stuff for the so called "civilized war" in the desert. I've been meaning to scan them pictures, I'll do that toute suite. He said that as far as he was concerned the BEST war movie of the desert war was "Play Dirty". A couple of scenes shook him.

Some pictures from long ago, in a part of the world that my Dad loving hated. He hated the climate, the sand, the people, everything about it except he said he wouldn't have missed it for anything. A photo-journal of a British Royal Engineer, 8th Army. 1938 to 1943 or so. There's the bastard, bottom right. Not sure which one he is here. I have a tonne of pictures that I've dug out. Training in England at Bishops Stortford in 1938 and Essendon 1940 Architecture in Haifa, Benghazi His mates Trucks, and where they went - lot's Cemeteries - lot's Bashed up Nazi stuff. I also found this, it's kinda chewed up. It's been burned, and it's all stained with black - blood???? Edit to fix pictures Nucken Futz fucked around with this message at 20:34 on Jan 20, 2016 |

From a few pages ago ..Kemper Boyd posted:I am pretty sure Steel Panthers: World At War had a "put down the Warsaw uprising" scenario. Hogge Wild posted:You can play Spanish Civil War battles in Steel Panthers WaW. I am feelin' the Love!! SPWaW 28 Nations 1930 - 1949 BooYahh!!! Comrade Koba posted:In theory, SP:WaW is a great game. It's the ultimate wargame sandbox - make up any scenario you want, using (pretty much) any Allied or Axis nation from the early 30's to the late 40's, and you can probably make it happen. Finns battling Nationalist Chinese in the forests of Siberia? Sure thing. Republican Spain vs. Norway? Not a problem. I noticed this last night, while I had been drinking. I was all ready to reflex-post ........ actually use the well known Drunken-Reflex-Post, but while my need to correct this was strong, I knew that it would come out all wrong. We've been working on this game for years ...... Yes, in the olden days there was a real bias in the game. We got rid of all that. Fixed as much as we could, new sounds, icons, a new pallette. A total review and correction of ALL the OOB's in the game. Tons of things..... too much to report. We bundled everything all together, (sorta) It works just fine in Windows 10, and we're well on our way to solving a niggling irritant due to new multi-processors. There's been a good 4000 D/L's of this updated version since it's intro in December 2015. SPWaW 2016 is a great game! And you can get it HERE!!! You should also get the addition Scenarios and Campaigns (plus a few patches etc) from HERE!!. There. I said my piece. Do with me what you will.
