I was hoping somebody had a more precise answer than "someday maybe". They've said that they're doing steam only for now because it makes it a lot easier for them to release patches, and they're planning to release one every day, maybe even multiple per day, for a while. If I've understood correctly, the plan is to release a non-steam version when the pace of patches slows down a bit, probably around the stage 2 beta. I don't think anyone knows when that will actually be, though.
