I think it's interesting that in the concept art it looks as though Rick is coldly ordering the blob creature he created to his death whereas in the finished product it looks more like a mercy killing.

Roiland talked about this in the interview posted earlier. He wanted ti clear that the creature was in perpetual pain and couldn't be soothed.
