I believe that in some European countries it's not a direct offense but if you wreck with inappropriate tires installed it's considered more your fault. Not sure if that applies just to the retards who try summer tires on snow or if it also includes crappy all seasons or lack of full winters in the colder regions.

It's been a bit over a week full of people driving surprisingly well in intermittently snowy conditions, but yesterday my G1W proved its value. A coworker and I had taken his car out to do a site survey at the other end of the state, and since he had been contemplating a dashcam himself I brought mine along. On the return trip we got up behind a truck that was in the middle of a double pass and then this happened:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F5vkYSaibk

Our destination was just a few miles away, so I made note of the plate and we got past as soon as the truck moved over, but there was no damage at all. Not even a rubbed off rubber streak, which surprised me after how hard it was to clean my car when I hit a rubber floor mat that was blowing around the highway.

I'm pretty sure my coworker will be buying one soon.

My G1W has started doing this when I shut the car off recently. It turns off, then for some reason turns back on. For a week or so it would get fully on and then pop a low battery warning and turn back off properly, but now the battery is apparently dead enough that it can't get fully booted and it just loops like this for a minute or two before giving up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unaKL8xQFv0

It still seems to work fine when the car is actually on and providing power, so its only a minor annoyance at the moment, but has anyone else experienced this and is there a fix?

Is there a reason for not wanting to record audio? I can only come up with privacy in case your videos are confiscated.
Wiretapping/eavesdropping laws pretty much fall in to one of two categories: one party consent and two party consent.

US Federal law only requires one party consent, which pretty much means you're in the clear to record your own conversations without explicit permission from the other parties. IIRC most states follow this rule, I know for sure Ohio does.

Some states have stricter laws though, where all parties being recorded must consent. This is why most national companies will put the "this call may be recorded" message in their phone system. IIRC Illinois is one of the states with the strictest laws.

Even if you're in a one party state things can still get grey. If the other people in the car start conversing between themselves where you're not involved, your previously legal recording under one party consent may have just become illegal eavesdropping. Same if someone gets in a cell phone conversation. IANAL, you can figure that out on your own.

That said, I keep my audio recording enabled. I drive almost exclusively in a one-party consent state with between zero and one passengers, so the situations where it's potentially illegal are few and far between.

This, after I told them I had actually lived there, and my poor car was involved in 4 accidents in as many years (one even being my own grandparents backing into my car)! I've never had an accident anywhere else! Even here in Taiwan!

That particular stretch of road has some concentrated stupid (current NE Ohio resident here), but Ohio is one of the better states I drive in. I argue that Indiana drivers are worse by far on an overall statewide basis. So many loving left lane hogs. The DC area is the absolute worst place I drive regularly, but that's understandable with the combination of density and variety in drivers.

IIRC the G1Ws were pretty well known for having a noisy switching power supply that is audible on an AM radio signal. Same reason AM radio gets fuzzy near big power lines. My old TomTom did the same thing, if it was pulling a lot of power it could even be heard on my aux input. Shouldn't affect FM or digital to any significant extent though. I certainly haven't noticed any difference with mine.

I forgot to pull the video but I came across two different wrong ways at the end of last week. Both old people driving the standard "gold" Grand Marquis. The first one might have been a spin out that just ended up the wrong way (cops were on site, facing the correct direction, and looking bored), but the second one was definitely someone coming up the offramp from I-80EB to OH-10.

On the plus side that second one seemed to have realized their mistake, they had their turn signal on and were pulling on to the gore area to get going the right direction as I passed.

We really need regular re-testing, especially with olds but I think it should be for everyone.

Honestly, some of the ramp designs I've seen (e.g. off and on ramps that share a paved segment and are only separated by a small median) seem to be a deliberate attempt to confuse an unfamiliar driver into turning into the wrong lane.

In this case they were coming from a toll booth and there's a concrete curb-style divider in the median, but from my old Crown Vic days I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out they drove right over the median. I used to drive over a curb separating my dorm lot from the Taco Bell lot all the time and that car took it like a champ, so I could certainly see a person with reduced reaction times in a couchmobile bumping over the median and not really realizing what had happened.

Huh, I have a ton of experience with streaming multimedia and product building.

Is a wifi enabled dashcam that can connect to a remote point in the car and save files there something people would really want?
I could literally make that product from start to finish and sell it in ~6 months.

*edit* I could even add RTSP if that's something people would find useful.

I've been playing with a DIY dashcam build on a Pi Zero W that does exactly this. It doesn't offload the entire card of course, just the flagged recordings. Right now I just have it doing so over SMB when I get home, but a long-term goal is to build a basic web service that'll let it submit video remotely either through open WiFi or tethering for those of us who use it.

Cooling the Pi in a black car has proven to be complicated, and I need to use something better than PLA for the cases for basically the same reason.

I'd be all over a decent camera that had WiFi client mode support and could use some kind of standard file transfer protocol to automatically transfer flagged recordings to my personal server when it sees a valid AP. Bonus points for supporting multiple SSIDs. Keep AP mode for local smartphone control/streaming support. Some kind of synchronization interface to allow multiple cameras to turn on/off and flag recordings simultaneously would probably be nice.

Exactly. It'd be really easy for a nerd with video editing software and a few reference measurements to determine your speed from video in a way which would be convincing to other nerdy people who understand the principles involved, but convincing a jury is a different matter. If you aren't recording audio there's even potential to create doubt about the accuracy of the camera's claimed framerate.

If you have a GPS overlay however, you now have the most accurate source of timing and positioning available to the average person putting the numbers on screen in plain view of anyone with two brain cells bumping in to each other.
