The whole nuclear thing is just so irritating. If the alternative wasn't more coal plants with their wonderful ash ponds, then maybe you'd have an argument. I'd venture to guess the Tennessee Valley Authority alone has caused more lasting health/environmental problems than all nuclear plants combined.

Elmers says dumb things from time to time, but if we're going to throw the word "monster" around, we have to start with Virginia Foxx.

But it's not really, is it? That sounds like it would take an enormous amount of storage space and battery power.

That was actually a joke people would make when those accusations first came about. Recording constantly would mean you would get about 15mins of battery life and make the processor start hitting 120º right against the side of your head.

Having said that, the "potentially and discreetly" that Drifter brings up is really the problem.

Not that it makes a huge difference but I'm pretty sure the headset itself just connects to your phone via bluetooth or whatever and the phone does all the heavy lifting.

It probably does chew battery to the point of uselessness in both devices but that doesn't make me like the idea of some glasshole potentially recording everything any more than I like the idea of some rear end in a top hat with a pinhole camera in their glasses or whatever.

I agree with you, but I want to add that Glass has a three year old processor that chugs hard encoding video, which it has to do before it sends it over bluetooth. The fact that Glass is $1500 and comes with the sort of internals that you have to make excuses for is yet another reason smug "Explorers" are so dumb.

A few years ago, there was an episode of South Park, a show which often exaggerates things to a grotesque degree for humor, where Butters was sent to an pray-away-the-gay camp.

The anti-gay therapy in that episode was less bizarre and extreme than the techniques used in real life.

Honestly I think when that episode came out the full extent of the situation hadn't really come out. There were a couple of suicides reported, but that's as far as most people had heard or cared about when the episode came out ~8 years ago. You had a lot of weirdos making vague references to "behavior modification", but we hadn't gone down the rabbit hole of first-hand/undercover reports of stuff like BYU giving electroshock therapy to students and pray away the gay camps trying to Ludovico people using feces and gay porn. All that, plus the fact that many counsellors turn out to be closeted men who basically end up being sexual predators toward attendees.

I almost wish Colbert wouldn't give him screen time.

It's kind of annoying how that interview went in general. Tim Draper is going to be completely unfazed by jokes about Central California being a super poor "Very West Virginia" because he gives absolutely no fucks about that. It just seems like one of those interviewers where a viewer could think Colbert was tacitly supporting a nutjob's ideas by giving them screen time and ripping into them while they laugh along.

e: this is america, so it is almost certainly the former. :smith:

It's the FYGM option. Tim Draper is a quintessential deluded venture capitalist from a family of well-off investors. If Six Californias is a play to draw attention to issues with the prop system or general governmental/social problems, then he'd end up being the most self-aware venture capitalist ever.

I'm actually a bit surprised Colbert chose to sympathetically portray the people saying they're boycotting Exodus. I guess it really did help that Ridley Scott actually did say things that exacerbated whatever controversy the movie had. I'm against whitewashing in Hollywood, but usually I avoid making an example of Biblical period pieces because of the complicated politics of people claiming a racial identity on near-mythical characters; I usually would only pursue arguing that a film is whitewashing if a more obvious case could be made (and there are plenty of examples). Good for Colbert to take a shot at Ridley Scott.

I mean both Ridley Scott and Rupert Murdoch have said incredibly ridiculous things about it. I mean Noah had a lot of weirdness about it, but Exodus is just offensive.

Also I rewatched the Smaug interview and I'm 100% positive that Colbert is going to masturbate to that clip every night for a long, long time.
