My biggest gripe (besides the two important info dumps done in rushed 30 second monologues) was how they immediately showed an alien, a ufo, a government craft, etc within the first five minutes instead of slowly leading up to it. "Here's all the crap the show is known for so you don't change the channel after the post game". That's some serious season 9 bullshit.

Season 8 was pretty myth arc heavy, especially compared to 6 and 7, and mostly dealt with Mulder's abduction and Super Soldiers (alien terminators). As for season 9, I can't think of any myth arc episodes aside from the Seinfeld-esque finale.

There's a handful but they deal with Scully's kid IIRC.

Pretty decent episode but man I do not give a single poo poo about magic wonder baby William. We already had two seasons of that. Also :laffo: at Mulder imagining him being abducted. Not everything has to be aliens, Mulder.

Well, to be fair, that was (if I recall) Jose Chung's From Outer Space, so everything mythology-based in that episode is highly suspect.

Still... Maybe it's not aliens after all. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

It's a old people procedural show that pretends to show NEW and DANGEROUS uses for technology. The pilot had a commercial jetliner flying 50 feet above the ground so that they could snake an ethernet cord out to the show's computerman hero's laptop who was racing behind the plane in a sports car because hackers. Another episode had bad guys hacking (???) an RV to drive off a cliff and the heroPCman had to do something computer to the RV by laying on a skateboard underneath the RV as it was driving. Robert Patrick stars.

Yes. Whatever you do, skip the pilot, best season is 7. You can start there really.

Do not listen to forums poster MariusLecter. First three seasons are perfect, even the mythology stuff. If you decide to skip around, find a guide that tells you what's a mythology episode and what's a monster of the week so that you don't end up watching the end of a two parter (there's lots of those).

Between the self-C-section and the doc's head bleeding from every opening, it's nice to see the new series isn't shying away from the type of body horror that made the original series so great.

So I read through all of this, and on paper at least it almost makes sense. It's just that the execution was so piss-poor that I can't be bothered to give a poo poo about any new mythology stuff knowing how half-assed the old stuff was after the first movie.

It's weird, every now and then the episodes on Netflix have a scene or a frame that's back in the old lovely resolution instead of crisp HD. It's usually an FX-heavy shot or an extreme close-up. I know it's not my connection because there's no artifacting and the transition from SD to HD is instantaneous. Did Fox cheap out on the restoration? Is it like this on the blu-rays?

Sounds like the same issues they had with the TNG remasters. That said, I'd rather have the existing HD transfers at $25/season instead of TNG's $50/season thanks to countless FX rebuilds.

I'm all for more movies, but not written by Darin Morgan. I know that sounds like sacrilege, and I love the guy's episodes, but 42 minutes is exactly how long he needs to tell a good story. I can't imagine stretching his writing style to feature length. It's quality over quantity. X-Files movies should be...well, what Fight the Future was. A big-budget version of the mytharc stuff where you can indulge the dumber aspects and give the audience a ride. Leave the more intimate side of the show on the television screen.

X seemed to help Mulder only out of obligation to Deep Throat. I don't think X ever thought Mulder was capable of doing what needed to be done, so he never gave Mulder the full measure of help he could have. Plus X seemed way more concerned with his own self-preservation.

Where are fans getting this from? X and Deep Throat are pretty clearly colleagues or mentor/mentee. X just doesn't place as much faith in Mulder as DT did.

The idea that loyalty so fierce so as to endanger your career and life many times by leaking sensitive information against your better judgement could be more than professional isn't really a novel concept. I don't necessarily subscribe to the idea, but it's fun to watch X's scenes with that in mind.

But there's nothing in the show to lend evidence to that theory. Why isn't "not wanting a secret cabal of sinister alien collaborators to continue unethical experiments and child abductions for a project that will result in slavery or death for the entire human race" motivation enough for that character? I don't understand fandom sometimes.

I just realised something about 2shy that I can't believe I didn't notice until now. Murder guy preyed on woman using the same thing he was seeking them for -- their fat. He was preying on their insecurities about their weight and image to subsequently feed on their weight.

In a way though there's nothing about it that is truly supernatural aside from the fat feeding. If he just killed these women and did something gruesome it would be a run of the mill serial killer, but it's only technically an x-file because the gruesome thing he does is freaky.

Still a lot better of an episode than I was expecting.

It's also got some great early 90's "we're not sure how computers work" scenes.

I like the TRASHMAN but Mulder and Scully didn't do or solve poo poo this episode. Very season 2ish. I like having old writers back, but if they do another miniseries, I think it's time to bring in some new blood. Darin Morgan is the only one who proved he still has it 100%.

How do you guys feel about that episode Duchovny wrote where an alien just wanted to play baseball except maybe he wasn't an alien and it was just a very clumsy allegory for racism?

How you feel about that episode probably depends on whether or not you like baseball episodes. Personally, I love it, but I can see why others would be ambivalent about it. There's some great elements;

- Jesse Martin and Frederic Lane are fantastic guest stars
- Young Art Dale reacting to Exley's real appearance
- Alien Bounty Hunter getting beaned by a baseball
- Mulder nerding out about something other than porn, UFOs, and basketball
- M. Emmet Walsh does a great job stepping in for Darren McGavin

The whole episode has this great fairy-tale feel to it, and it's nice to have an episode that deals with the overall mythology (in a way) but isn't doom and gloom and high stakes. Jesse Martin in particular is just great the entire episode, particularly his conversation with Art Dale on the bus after Dale sees his true form. I love the idea of a baseball game convincing an alien to become a human and just play baseball. It also has that wonderful Mulder and Scully scene at the end.

Plus it makes a great shirt.
