:siren:For any spoiler talk or talk of issues which haven't been re-released please post in the appropriate thread.:siren:

MiracleMan is a book that's in a pretty interesting situation so I think it could be due a different thread in BSS. Given that the only way to read the book for the last 30 years has been through original issues or piracy I think it stands as a classic book which the majority of BSS hasn't read. Therefore please use spoiler code for any big reveals, or if you want to talk about future issues or the effect the book had on the industry use the discussion thread.

What is MiracleMan?
At his core MiracleMan is a knock off Captain Marvel made in the UK and created by Mike Anglo. He has the same basic powers, kid sidekick and says a magic word to turn into a hero.

Then who's MarvelMan?
The naming of the character has bounced around due to rights but Marvel are republishing and keeping the MiracleMan name for the character.

Why should I care?
MiracleMan is Watchmen before Watchmen existed. Alan Moore, Garry Leach and Alan Davis deconstructed the superhero genre in a way that wasn't expected and to some is still the highpoint of Moore's career. It's a classic that's been lost to time.

If it's so good why haven't I read it before?
Rights mess. A ton of different people most notably Todd McFarlane have claimed to own the rights to the character at various points in time. Marvel threw some Disney money around and got everything under one roof and are hoping to rack in some money for it.

The future of MiracleMan?
Marvel are going to republish the series as a monthly book, removing Alan Moore's name as to not anger the wizard anymore, and move on to the incomplete follow up series by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham. Once everything has been reprinted Marvel intend for Gaiman to finish his run some 20 years later. You're probably looking at 2016 before brand new issues are out.

So where do I start?
MiracleMan #1 at your local comic store/digital comics outlet from January 15th, 2014. The writing will be credited to "The Original Writer" but it's the book you want.

Also to note Marvel aren't being particularly cheap with this reprinting so maybe see if your local comic shop is doing a deal as the first issue is 5.99 and the rest will be 4.99.

Not sure whether to jump on board with singles, or wait for trades... Either way, I'm looking forward to finally getting to read it!

Well Marvel are putting a lot behind this so it's going to be MiracleMan everything for the next few months.

If Alan Moore isn't getting money for this re-printed run why is it $6.00 for the first issue. That's silly. Is there $6 of content here? I'd love to read it but it seems a lot cheaper to wait for trade.

It reprints more than just the first Eclipse issue, there are some earlier stories in there too, apparently, and some essays/commentary. It's a pretty thick book.

Well, especially true in this case where it's really expensive for singles. Unless the trade ends up being $30-40 bucks.

It's 61 pages. I haven't read it yet, but the volume justifies the price, I would think.

I'm a big Alan Moore fan, but I've never read this or even know much of anything about it, so I'm pretty excited to get in from the beginning. It'll be a fun readalong!

Neither was my comic shop, who tried to tell me it didn't come out for two more weeks until I brought it up on Comixology and made them admit they just didn't bother to order it because they didn't think it would sell.

I should have just bought it on Comixology right in front of them. I did buy it though! And nothing big happened in issue #1 but there's a ton of extra stuff in the back, and it does look like it's gonna be pretty fun!

A significant number of the pages are reprinted material from the 50s, though, which I personally found very light on redeeming features.

I appreciate (?) the classic MiracleMan stuff. I'm not going to say that it's the best classic age stuff going but it has it's charm and I liked the interview with Quesada and Mike Anglo. It's also nice to see a comic creator ending his life happy and appreciated and not having to worry about money.

As for the main bulk of the issue it easily met my high expectations. I had seen the "I teach the you the Superman" page before but in context it really is something else and a highlight of when Moore is really on his game. Everything else in the issue was a nice twist on very rapidly throwing a Golden Age hero into the far flung future of the 80's.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it, I usually find old/classic stuff to be nigh-on unreadable. Loved his wife's reaction to his tales of fifties exploits, and the interview with Anglo was rather endearing.

As far as I'm aware, no.

Also for those going digital only it's important to note that Comixology have two versions a censored Mass Market version and a Parental Advisory version. As of now no major changes, a difference between a character wearing underwear and being naked but it's an Alan Moore book so won't be staying PG-13 for long.

Yeah I only saw it because I was wondering why the main series was being called Mass Market version. I would presume it's being done to milk as much money as possible or possibly get around the book being pulled from Apps in the Apple Store.

GET OUT OF MY PROGRAMME, SAD MAN
Picked up issue 1 today. First time that I've bought a single in about two years or so, but hey, it's Miracleman. Hands down my favourite comic of all time. And after twenty years of publication purgatory, he's finally back! I've been holding off re-reading my original Eclipse issues, just in case Marvel sorted out the rights, and I can say that I'm not at all disappointed.

I'm not too fond of the regular cover art by Joe Quesada. I mean, I'm really thankful to the guy for being so instrumental in getting Miracleman back in print. However, the cover really highlights that he doesn't seem to understand Moore's version of the character. Slightly more benevolent and less malevolent, Joe.

The interior colouring is incredibly lush. I know people in the other Miracleman thread were complaining about not keeping the lovely 80's Eclipse colouring, but I thought it was very apparent to anyone that Garry Leach probably didn't want his work to feature purple faces, among other things. And after seeing his name under the art restoration section, I knew this was probably going to be the most definitive colouring of the series. Impressive.

There's some nice "Behind the Scenes" work after the first two chapters from Garry Leach. A very nice addition and makes it worth the price of admission. I'm glad I splashed out, in case they try to exclude any of this in the hardback of A Dream of Flying.

I liked this a lot. The transition from the fake 50s comic to the Nietzche quote was peak Alan Moore. Just an enormous sense of dread there.

Without spoiling anything, is this generally as dark as Watchmen? It's hard to tell where it's going right now, but the juxtaposition of the golden age hero in the "modern" world is a really interesting dynamic already.

I thought the colouring looked great, too. It definitely doesn't look like it's 30 years old.

In some ways absolutely, but in other ways it is a more idealistic story. It's weird. Scary as Hell all the way.

I was skeptical about the coloring when I saw that one page side-by-side, but when I got to that exact page when actually reading my reaction was "huh, this looks ten thousand times better than I remember it looking last week when I saw the comparison".

The new coloration is beautiful and I can't wait for the big stuff in the future to be shown in that color.

Something from Nothing
Is the 50's-style comic at the beginning original work done by Moore / Leach for this first issue? Or is it a reprint of old Anglo-era work that Moore uses as a lead-in, with his work beginning with the zoom-in and Nietzsche quote?

The dialog in the first part was so crazy I honestly thought that it was Moore parodying classic comics, but nope, video rings and science gestapo totally written seriously.

But the transition, fantastic. I'm really curious about where it goes, I know some vague ideas, mostly just that it is a deconstruction of golden/silver age comics of the 30s-50s.

Jan 17, 2005

While I've not read anything to confirm this I think its pretty obvious why exactly he chose that story, since it has guys coming from the far off future of 1981 with time travel and the Science Gestapo and then the actual Moore comic starts in 1982.

Yeah both that and the mirroring of MiracleMan and friends gleefully smashing bad guys jaws in the 50's with the present day return as he towers over the bad dudes with a smirk of "I'm not human" is Moore picking the perfect Golden Age story to use.
