 Hello, my name is Devious Vacuum, and I am a roboticist. But when I decided I wanted to LP some games, I thought I should focus on what I'm REALLY good at: having a vagina. Let's Play Games for Girls! All of us are aware that "Girl Games" exist online, and that there are a lot of them and they're all pretty lovely, both in terms of messages they send and how well they are implemented. Why are Girl Games so terrible? How many of them are actually out there? WHY DO THESE GAMES EXIST?? These are the hard-hitting questions I would like you to help me answer! In each episode, I'm going to look at a collection of Girl Games, mostly from free-to-play websites, but also some games full of terrible messages that you have to actually pay money for. This is by NO MEANS the full extent of girl games out there! There are so many of them. So many. That's why I need you!! Would you like to play along at home? Everyone is encouraged to go find Girl Games of their own and post evidence of them here! Whether it be video, screenshot, or even just an image of your finished product, any and every contribution is encouraged. How deep does the rabbit hole go? Join me and find out! Saint's Row 2 is an excellent Girl Game and y'all should go watch those LPs! There is somewhat of a derail about Metroid going on here, so I thought I'd weigh in and say that Metroid is not a "game for girls" as I am defining it for this thread, it is a game with a female protagonist. What Other M and "girl games" have in common is that they are both sexist, but Other M is still outside the scope of this thread. What I mean is, given the set of all sexist games S, and the set of all games marketed exclusively at little girls G, G is a subset of S, not the other way around.

A lot of the responses from people about how much they enjoy the "playing dolls" aspect of many games has reminded me of the other side of the Girl Games message: that dress-up and caring about one's physical appearance are decidedly NOT in the domain of Things Boys Can Do. One of my favorite things in LP is watching boys play girl games, because it's like y'all are just finding this poo poo out for the very first time, and it's hilarious. But! It is also a symptom of how our culture prevents boys from developing skills in things seen as traditionally feminine, such as emotional expression and emotional literacy. It's obvious here that EVERYONE enjoys playing dolls, and playing dolls alone is not problematic. In a perfect feminist world, I would like to see more games with extensive customization options, and for a variety of other reasons about representation besides just that! "Everybody can do everything" includes acknowledging that boys enjoy doing "girl things" as well.

Speaking of dudes who always play as lady characters, one of my dearest friends growing up was the type of guy who always played as female characters. He is a straight male, but he definitely wasn't sexualizing them, that was just his preference. In Mario Party, he'd play as Peach and I'd be Luigi or Daisy, in Smash Bros, he'd play as Zelda and I'd play as Link. He was always Serena in Age of Wonders II: Shadow Magic. I think ultimately he just identified with those characters the most, and they just happened to be female! The characters he picked tended to be the ones that were magical/spiritual do-gooders or "healers," and usually those characters are female. However, obviously, people of all genders can be of the personality to identify with characters like that. Once again, we run into a problem that can be solved with more equal gender representation in games! Y'know, conversely, this reminiscing has reminded me of how as a girl I was averse to playing female characters in many games because they were so obviously sexualized it made me uncomfortable. For example, in the above-mentioned Age of Wonders I'd play as Nekron or "some guy in a hood" (the custom character portrait) and name him Bob, and that was because the female portraits I either didn't identify with enough or was grossed out by how their boobs and butts were so visible all the time. Girl Games are mostly sexualized, so I can see how I didn't want to play those either. So go figure that one out.

The comment about what a beautiful love story this game is really makes it for me. "Amarantha" has to "get her boyfriend to fall in love with her all over again"? Is this Anime The Notebook? The other day I got a very important message on Ask.fm, and that person convinced me to make a clarification for this thread: The message I got was related to Girl Games and trans women. I want to clarify that while the games we're making fun of are blatantly exclusionary on many levels, in this thread, we are all girls. These games want to define "girls" strictly and narrowly, so in this thread, I want to do the opposite. The bad messages in these games effect everyone, so therefore everyone is girls. Including everyone who identifies as female, which includes trans women, or, as I like to call them, women. When I react to and analyze these games, I am going to start with what offends me personally, but of course that is not going to always be the same for the rest of you. People with different experiences and backgrounds will have additional things to say about why these games are dumb and bad. I have no authority to speak on behalf of a trans woman, a queer woman, a woman of color, A MAN, and so on, about how these games affect them except on a very superficial level. But that's why I made this thread! I want you to tell me, and I am eager to hear your opinons and experiences. Ultimately, I want to increase my own awareness of all these issues and the awareness of the entire thread as well! It's no good to go around tearing down only some problematic aspects of these games. If you are reading the thread, if you are experiencing these games, then your opinions are valid and you will be heard here. Okay, now go back to making silly .gifs, thank you everyone.
