Players are allowed to use their likeness to earn money outside of official college merchandising, but pay a percentage of these activities back to the school. All players are insured under a standard policy that pays out for serious injury which is covered by the NCAA and not individual schools (so smaller, less profitable schools don't get whacked on insurance claims). Players still have to enrol and attend classes like any other student and must remain academically eligible in order to play. Or you'd just see a majority of college programs completely shut down because school can't/won't make that size of investment. They won't win so it doesn't really matter.
