This is my first real EDF game(I played and beat IA on the PC and it was okay but very mediocre). I played a few missions with my friends last night. On our last mission of the night, the mission where the giant walker that shits hectors first appeared, we got basically obliterated; it was down to all of us scattered and trying desperately to stay alive long enough to win. Finally it was down to my one friend playing Wing Diver, alone against like 100 drones and 10 hectors, fleeing for his life with a sliver of health. The airstrike comes in and blows up the walker right as the hectors finally catch up to my friend and kill him. We sat there in silence for a minute until the MISSION COMPLETE scrolled onto the screen while I watch the camera pan around my corpse.

Our response was to start spamming EDF! EDF!. :911:

(Incidentally, is it just me or are Fencer miniguns worthless? They do piss poor damage, have horrible accuracy, and their recoil is almost impossible to tame. I'm having much more success sticking with hand cannons or the auto-shotguns for basically every enemy. When I'm not "accidentally" team killing with mortars. :getin:)

Yeah, you'd think that wouldn't work because of how fast they move, but there's always a point where the pause to turn around, and I just nail them then. Sure the red flyers are HP sinks, but just be sure to bring a high damage gun, I suppose.

These fuckers are the most unfun garbage I've ever seen, goddamn. If you don't have a team full of snipers on Hard or higher you're pretty much hosed because they have a bazillion hitpoints and do a bazillion damage. I just want to blow up giant armies of hectors and ants and poo poo, not sit and agonizingly aim sniper rifles at flying poo poo while hiding under a building like I'm playing Gears of War or something. :qq:

This isn't true. I've been using the Jackhammer and dash canceling with it for ages now. Hell, I have a Reflector now which makes me even faster because of how quickly it's reflect animation runs. I'm pretty sure the only time I've taken the Jackhammer off since getting it is when I dropped down to Easy for a while to rush through several missions and decided to play with the Dynamo Blade instead.

I'm not talking about shield cancelling, I'm talking about cancelling with the melee weapon itself. With spears you can actually cancel the dash animation with the spear itself without having to have a shield equipped for the reflect trick. The Jackhammer doesn't let you do that for some reason so if you want to move around and cancel with it you actually need a shield, so you can't use it as your gun/melee setup. I normally prefer the Vulcan Hammers if I'm going to go all out melee and bringing a shield because of how often you get knocked back while employing a shield.

I did not know that. Interesting. Though who blocks with a shield? The reflect negates all damage and may even do some back at the enemy, and if you're using at least an Ion Shield it's quick enough you can spam it between melee attacks with worrying about timing.

Blocking with a Tower Shield + Vulcan Hammer for life. Tower Shields have insane radial coverage while blocking and make you almost immune to damage(I had a teammate Wing Diver shoot me in the face with that stupid plasma bazooka and it did like 20 damage), meaning you can safely charge a vulcan hammer to kill things. It's my go-to combo for ants and non-retiarius spiders.

I'm playing couch co-op (with polo-rican who posted above) with him as a Wing Diver and I as a Ranger. It took us a few levels to realize that whoever picks up the item is who gets it. Which sucks since the wing diver is so much faster at collecting items then any other class. So, he kept getting super fun weapons while I got squat.

Also, each level felt like I was constantly out of range of enemies while the Wing Diver shot them all before I could get to them.

So, now we both play as Wing Divers...I love the class but it completely changes the game.

Are you sure about this? It feels like as a career Fencer player I'd basically never get any loot if this was the case. I play with a lot of Wing Divers and always get a bunch of weapons after missions.

This is a big thing. One of the most important things to learn about the melee weapons is that almost none of them are truly melee weapons. Stuff like Blasthole/Flashing Spears have a good 40 meters of range if not more, and Vulcan Hammers can clear a surprisingly giant radius.

A similar level Titan has more raw damage and blast radius, but the shots are super slow and hard to aim.

Most of the vehicles have misaligned weapons and hosed up camera problems like this. The Vegalta mechs are misaligned so that even though the machine gun is on one arm and the rocket launcher is on the other, if your machine gun is on target the rocket launcher will miss and vice versa despite them being visually parallel. Even the one-gun tanks have problems because it's almost impossible to determine where you're actually aiming due to no crosshairs.

I've got a few questions before I get into online multi:

*Will my piddly level 20 gear allow me to be of any use to people rolling through Hardest/Inferno?

*Can I use any of the Ranger crap I unlocked on other classes?

*Can I separate the Jump command from the side roll command?

No, no, and no, unfortunately.

1. You can game the first issue weapons-wise by farming a really early mission in Hardest to get some higher level drops(mission 3 is particularly good because it's effectively a giant flat shooting gallery with nothing but tons of gray ants), with the caveat that this won't fix your massive armor deficiency for higher difficulties(if you're still rolling around at 200-300 armor, stuff on Hardest will one shot you). Armor is unfortunately a gigantic pain in the rear end to get up and either requires ridiculous amounts of playtime or some of the most tedious unfun farming I've ever done in in a video game.

2. Equipment and armor level is specific to class, but you can change classes any time you want. It's a good idea to pick two classes and alternate based on your mood and the needs of the mission because that way you'll ensure a steady stream of "OOH SHINY NEW STUFF" and your armor gain won't suffer too much.

3. Nope.

Playing as a fencer feels pretty pointless when you're with an Air Raider who stomps around in a Vegalta dealing double your damage, moving twice as quickly, and with 10x the hit points (6000 vs around 600 currently for our fencer).

Fencers are insanely fast and mobile once you understand how dash cancelling works. Nothing the Air Raider deploys will ever be as agile and hard to pin down as a competent fencer(though some vehicles will be able to move in a straight line substantially faster). It's better to not get hit at all than it is to tank damage, as even huge rear end wall-o-HP vehicles can get ripped apart in seconds by being swamped. Dash cancelling is also a substantial damage output increase for some weapons; the hand cannons fire roughly three times as fast when cancelled repeatedly, for example, which makes them significantly more deadly than a comparable Vegalta's armament.

Stage 96: Demon Army online is an absolutely murderous difficulty jump. Quite literally starting the mission covered in a legion of those bastard upgraded drones with the bullshit stunlock lasers and being given roughly 20 seconds to kill all of them before infinity ants/spiders/bees drown you while being bombarded by blue hectors that are also marching towards you and oh here are more drones is the first I've actually become frustrated at the game. My friends and I(Air Raider, Fencer, Ranger, Wing Diver/Ranger) are getting overwhelmed by the initial waves before we even start working on the hives.

Life Pod guns are super useful in multiplayer to keep rez chains going when life pickups are being stingy, and vehicles are fantastically powerful for certain things. A Naegling on a hill a ways away from a fight can kill drones/bees/small dragons en masse while the Air Raider's teammates deal with land-based threats, for example, railgun tanks are death to large single targets like hectors and giant dragons, and the artillery pattern Vegaltas are basically walking spammable nuclear strikes against massed bugs. Certain air strikes trivialize many mission objectives completely safely; Satellite Blasters can kill dropships and bug hives effortlessly from long range and recharge nearly instantly with your teammates killing some random ants.

Air Raiders are a poo poo solo class, though. I'm hoping they fix stuff like the wire guns and the limpet launchers to not be a pathetic joke so the class has some personal firepower. Hmm, am I going to spend a slot on a lovely limpet launcher that can't kill a red ant in three reloads, or am I going to bring another Satellite Blaster?

Dash Cancelling is a cool mechanic but it needs to not be coupled to specific weapon types because it sort of sucks poo poo to have to bring a spear/javelin or spear/shield setup in half your slots for the class to even be playable. I'd love if they retained the mechanic but decoupled it from weapons in general somehow.

That is why it has the highest armor rating.

Armor in this game is about as much protection as tinfoil against a hurricane and it only really matters against incidental chip damage if you're playing with the default multiplayer armor limit activated; the primary method of survival is simply not getting hit in the first place, either by killing everything before it can threaten you or by evasive action. A fencer getting 50% more hp than a ranger due to a higher armor rating is functionally meaningless because both of you are going to die in one hit from a gold ant or a giant dragon breath.

The best example of how relatively useless armor is is watching how fast Air Raider vehicles with tens of thousands of armor die when exposed to damage.

Honestly this happens with reasonable armor values even on Hardest. An Air Raider with ~4k armor(about two playthroughs worth with a significant amount of brute force/crimson farming on the side) gets blown out almost immediately by any real damage that isn't "random chips from flying drones".

I guess you can tank some stuff if you turn off the armor limit and cheat engine or AFK farm yourself an insane amount of armor, but with the multiplayer armor limit and without doing AFK farming you're very much dependent on evasion and positioning to live against real threats.

This lines up with my experience pretty much perfectly. The Fencer is never the best at any one thing(besides having the most armor), but they are the ultimate switch hitters and have an order of magnitude more flexibility than any of the other classes. This is super helpful in Hardest and Inferno, where someone making a mistake or a freak accident(NPC wandering in front of an explosive weapon being fired, for example) can throw the mission into a spiral that can be hard to escape from; Fencers excel in salvaging that situation. They can take over bug kiting duties, they can provide long range fire support, they can use their incredible speed and armor values to be the resurrection medic, etc.

I feel a lot safer with a good fencer in a team. I don't think more than one is best simply because other classes perform their specializations better, but flexibility is a power all of its own.
