Old Town Road to EGOT

We used to have a Deftones thread, but it's been archived, so this thread will be devoted to discussing Deftones, their lead singer Chino and all his various side projects.

Now, why should we talk about Deftones? Well, you know how nu-metal was pretty lovely for the most part and produced a bunch of disposable bands, many of which have faded into obscurity or are still around but are making music that's just as bad if not worse than what they used to play? Deftones was always a cut above the rest back when nu-metal was in its heyday, and they've stuck around and continued to make music that's experimental, interesting and incredibly rewarding to listen to. Their first 3 albums, Adrenaline, Around the Fur and White Pony, produced several cream of the crop nu-metal tunes, many of which they still play live to this day. Then with their self-titled album in 2003, they started to get pretty experimental, which they kicked into high gear for their 2006 album Saturday Night Wrist, a more atmospheric venture which many fans will say is their worst album but I enjoy it very much :shobon:

In 2008, their longtime bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a bad car crash during which he was ejected from his vehicle due to not wearing a seatbelt. This put Chi in a coma from which he never awoke. He finally passed away in April of 2013. RIP Chi :( Deftones had nearly finished a new album called Eros when Chi was involved in his accident. The band recruited a new bassist, Sergio Vega, to fill in for Chi on their tour while he was in the hospital. Eventually Vega became a permanent member and the band made the decision to shelve Eros until Chi recovered. Since Chi passed away, the band has said that they won't release it at all. Instead of releasing Eros as planned, the band went to work on a new album, 2010's Diamond Eyes.

Many regard Diamond Eyes as one of their best and just a fantastic album from start to finish, myself included.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woAcXSMyCEw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woR6ohiFeYE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc9aNOE67bs

Then in 2012, they released an album entitled Koi No Yokan, which combined some of the spacier, more experimental sounds they'd explored in the past with their signature metal sounds. While not my favorite of theirs, it's a strong album with a bunch of very solid tracks and it's definitely up there for me. It's worth a listen for aesthetic reasons for sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkkOLMTOM7s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5z1uBbvsq_U

And that's what Deftones have been up to most recently. They've also been touring pretty frequently. I've seen them live twice in the past few years and theirs is one of the most fun live shows I've ever attended. They're incredible performers, especially Chino and Sergio, and they really get the crowd going. They play a nice mix of songs that spans their entire discography, too, so you don't have to worry that you won't hear any songs from a certain album of theirs.

Chino's also involved in a few different side projects, so I'll list the major ones in chronological order.

The first big one is Team Sleep, which was an experimental and at times trip-hop group consisting of Chino, Zach Hill, Todd Wilkinson, DJ Crook (who was a friend of Deftones' Frank Delgado) and Rick Verret. Rob Crow from Pinback also contributed vocals on a few of their songs. They only released one album together, a self-titled in 2005. This is probably my favorite Chino project because at times it sounds a lot like Deftones but other times it sounds like something completely different altogether.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi7Fd2wytOM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFHZhdMOC1w
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbKNkqTz5PI

Next up is Palms, a post-metal group featuring Chino and 3 former members of Isis, Aaron Harris, Bryant Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide. This one just sounds pretty much like some Isis material with Chino on vocals, so if you're familiar with Isis then you probably already have a good idea of what this sounds like. Palms released their first album last year, a self-titled.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-admkulMoM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-8RgTIzHdQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0zg0z3UjY8

And now we get to the last major one and the reason I'm posting this thread now, Crosses. This is a dark electronic "witch house" project with Chino, Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom. For the most part, it sounds like music to have sex to. They've released 2 EPs so far, one in 2011 and one in 2012, and their first full-length album is coming out on February 11th. The album includes all the songs from the first two EPs plus some new tracks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nz2iRwngcw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAtXbpD0EZo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb3BNS4GukA

So what do you think about Deftones? What's your favorite album and why? Do you have a favorite side project of Chino's? Have you seen them live, and if so, what was your experience at the show? Let's talk about this band that has somehow continued to produce awesome, quality material for almost two decades and its offshoots who are also consistently interesting!

4/13/14 Edit: A year ago today, Chi Cheng passed away, and to honor his memory, Deftones released a new song, one they'd completed with Chi on their unreleased album Eros, entitled "Smile".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In-x77Tx8xk
It's still unclear as to whether Eros will be released. It isn't finished, after all, though several songs had been completed at the time of Chi's hospitalization. If it is released, someone else (Sergio?) would have to play bass on the remaining songs. Or maybe they'll release it as an EP containing just the songs that had been finished with Chi on them. Who knows. But if this song is any indication of the quality of Eros as a whole, it's gonna loving rule if it ever sees the light of day.

Never got into them until I heard Diamond Eyes. Though I did see them open for Metallica way back on the Summer Sanitarium tour and thought they were great. Koi No Yokan is my favorite now. Amazing stuff, I love their more mellow and less nu-metal sound.

Speaking of which, I've read alot of people talking poo poo about Crosses but after checking out those youtube links I'm really digging it. Maybe it's because it sounds nothing like any of the WitchHouse music I've heard before... which always sounded to me like spooky Norwegian castle music for mall-goth.

Crosses are awesome, Deftones are awesome, Team Sleep needs to get the hell back together, and Chino needs to never stop making music.

They just played The Epilogue (one of the new tracks from the album) on Kimmel and it loving ruled.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBKAcdZ4eZo

And then they played part of Bitches Brew over the end credits but that was cut off. The whole thing is gonna be online, though. That's how performances always are on Kimmel.

Yeah I'm not too familiar with witch house, but from what I've heard, they use the same aesthetic as witch house artists but not necessarily the same sound.

I never got the hate for Satureday Night Wrists. I really love that album and consider it a really strong album with very few weak spots (it doesn't help that the songs I like on that album are ones that people seem to hate).
I do love the Deftones though and have seen them about 4 or so times.

It's alright, Hole in the Earth feels like a weak single and it's got Fat Chino which tends to correlate with weaker performances overall.

I have very mixed feelings about the album. On the one hand, it has a few of my absolute favorite songs they ever did - Combat, Kimdracula, Cherry Waves, Xerxes. I even like Pink Cellphone a lot until the last bit.

But then there are songs like Rapture and especially Mein, the latter of which is one of the only songs on any Deftones album that I just skip most of the time. My extreme hatred of System Of A Down isn't even why I dislike the song, either. It's just very, very, very bland in every way except for Abe's drumming (which is always ace so no surprises there).

Then again my favorite album by them is probably their S/T, another album which seems to have pretty mixed reactions. So whatever I guess.

Just did a really quick listen to some of the Crosses stuff and a lot of it sounds the same to me...maybe it will grow on me, but I prefer the harder stuff from the Deftones.

I've been waiting for Crosses debut album to come out for a while now, the two EPs were excellent and the real thing doesn't disappoint. I hope Chino continues the project with those guys rather than leaving it as a one-off thing like Team Sleep, because it would be nice to have another album from them in a few years or so.

Crosses just announced a couple shows in Los Angeles. They're playing at the Roxy and the Observatory in Santa Ana in April.

Unfortunately tickets are on sale yet. Hope they don't sell out as fast as they did last time.

Saturday Night Wrist is an album that, frankly speaking, starts horribly. Both Hole in the Earth and Rapture are mediocre as all hell, which is only exacerbated when you listen onward and how much better both Beware and Cherry Waves are. Mein is generic as poo poo and should've been left off the album altogether. When "Konami Code" starts, though? Ho, boy. You know you're in for a treat.

Off the second half, Xerces and Rats!Rats!Rats! seem kind of like they were flipped in the sequential order at the last minute, but they're both great. Pink Cellphone as a breather is great (that last bit is still completely unnecessary, though) and the last three songs are all perfect closers. If you take the three boring songs off, you're left with pretty much one of the best records the Deftones has done.

After remembering that I used to read Stylus Magazine all those years ago gave me the idea, the way I usually hear it on my music player when I go jogging is as follows:
1. Beware
2. Cherry Waves
3. Konami Code
4. Rats!Rats!Rats!
5. Xerces
6. Pink Cellphone
7. Combat
8. Kimdracula
9. Riviére

Regarding Chino's side projects, Palms was the bomb and I'm eagerly waiting to be notified of my Visa-renewal so I can go see them ASAP.

Oh poo poo :stare: This is excellent.

So does this mean they're going to release the album after all or they just put this one track out there in his memory? It seems like if they'd do that, they could release the whole thing to honor him. I would not be the least bit disappointed if this was the next album they released if it all sounds as good as this track. I got why they never released it before, but if they put one track out there in his memory it seems like maybe they'd be okay with putting it all out?

RIP Chi :smith:

I hope they do release it soon-ish, but Chino recently said that the rest of the band is already working on a new album while he's out touring with Crosses so I'm not sure that it'd be their next album.

Either way if the rest of the album is this awesome it'll rule. This one song is even more experimental than all of Koi No Yokan. Maybe they'll release it on Chi's birthday or something, that'd be really cool.

Just wanted to post that it's a been awhile now that the Crosses album came out... and I'm really diggin' it. Every song is listenable, and though some tracks get super-mellow, there's really no filler. Even the little instrumental near the end is creepy with lots of (tastefully subtle) NIN-influenced sound design. Although I could totally see a couple of the tracks in a Hollywood soundtrack, that's not a bad thing when it's all still abstract enough to keep you interested.

Holy poo poo, Team Sleep is working on new material for the first time in years! :wth:

quote:

Dear friends,

Please join us as we create our next record in Woodstock, New York. We'll gather at Applehead studio, near the base of the Catskill mountains to eat, write, play and record. For a long time, business people, logistics, careers, adulthood, families and the House Republicans have thwarted us, but we've continued to make music. At the same time, the creative process has become increasingly fragmented and dehumanized. With that in mind, we're very excited to get together with our friends, hang out, play music and have a unique experience in a beautiful place. We'd like you to be there, too. Your participation will be essential to the independent creation and release of the live performance and our forthcoming studio record; we look forward to seeing you.

Oh hell yeah. Crosses is really good, but Team Sleep has been my favorite side project of Chino's and I'm psyched to hear they're together again. If they just put out an album consisting entirely of instrumentals that'd be awesome, as all their instrumental demos are amazing.
