The Xbox One was initially announced as an "always online" console, with mandatory check-ins every 24 hours. This would allow games to be played off the hard drive without the disc, and give users the ability to instantly access their entire game collection from any Xbox One console. Used games would have to be sold and purchase from approved retailers. However, after facing an intense backlash, Microsoft has since abandoned all such plans. Xbox One game discs will function exactly how they did on Xbox 360. As long as you have the disc, you're good. Will they bring back the DRM? The DRM was not popular, and there is no reason to think it would be received any more warmly in the future. Microsoft has expressed interest in eventually bringing back some of the more positively received features, like digital game sharing. It is extremely unlikely that Microsoft will force any major changes from the current status quo, but ultimately this is a personal judgement call you should make for yourself. Is the Xbox One region free? Yes, it is region free by default, though publishers can enact region locking if they so choose. Historically, publishers have rarely chosen to region lock games on region free platforms. Do I have to buy things with Microsoft Points? No, both Xbox One and Xbox 360 will use real currency. What's the situation with headsets? A mono-headset is included with every Xbox One. Additionally, the Kinect can now track audio from specific individuals, greatly reducing background noise. Third party headsets will not be supported until March 2014, when Microsoft releases an adapter. Both new Xbox One and old Xbox 360 headsets will work with the adapter. So far Turtle Beach is confirmed to be developing multiple headsets specifically for Xbox One. Are Avatars crossing over? Avatars are still present, though in a limited capacity. It seems that they are now exclusively there to pose for gamer pictures. What are the options for expandable storage? The internal hard drive is 500gb, and is non-replaceable. If you need extra space, you will someday be able to attach any USB 3.0 external hard drive. No more proprietary storage! This will work for game installs, game downloads, game saves, etc. Does the Xbox One support game installs? Yes, game installs are actually mandatory. You will still need the disc in the tray just like on 360, but the game will install itself automatically. Where are all the indie games? Microsoft is a little late to the party on the indie side, but they've made some great strides recently. Plenty of indie studios have already been given development kits, and eventually Microsoft will allow any retail console to be converted into one. Self-publishing is now allowed, and indie games will no longer be segregated from the rest of the marketplace. They're full-fledged games, complete with achievements. Can I use the HDMI-in port for *insert device here*? The Xbox One will accept video input from any HDMI capable device, even *COMPETING GAME CONSOLE*. The signal will be slightly delayed, though. Does the Xbox One use HDCP? Can I use a video capture device? It does, but only for video media (Netflix, Blu-ray, etc). Games will not be affected by this, so gameplay can still be easily capture via external devices. So when's the Kinect-free SKU coming out? June 2014 Do you have to pay extra to use Netflix? Not anymore. Starting in June 2014 Microsoft has moved most things out of the Xbox Live paywall. How do I buy Xbox One games on the website? Go here: https://store.xbox.com *Credit for a lot of the above text goes to Bass Bottles. Let me know if you see anything that needs changing/adding. I'll be updating things going forward with all the latest info. Technical Support When I try to start a game or app, the screen just turns black and nothing happens. What do I do? This doesn't happen often, but with an always on console with background patching I guess you can expect an occasional hiccup. All you need to do is a hard reset of the console. What this means is, if your default shut down method leaves the console in "instant on" mode, you'll need to bypass that and make sure your Xbox One turns all the way off. See the next question. How do I do a hard reset or cold boot of the Xbox One? "To perform a hard restart, hold the power button for 10 seconds while the system is on. The system will turn off. When you hit the button again, it will start and display the green start-up screen. All your data is preserved, but cache is cleared and some settings are reverted and log-in or game start issues are resolved. Alternatively, you can perform a full shutdown by going to SETTINGS > POWER & STARTUP and change POWER MODE from Instant-On to Energy-saving. After changing the setting, choose "Turn Xbox off". It can be powered back on by holding down the GUIDE button on the Xbox controller or the button on the front of the Xbox console. Once it's back online you can go back to SETTINGS > POWER & STARTUP and re-enable Instant-on. If the manual button/menu-initiated reboot doesn't work, do it the old-fashioned way: power down the Xbox One, unplug it, wait for 10 seconds, plug everything back in and power it back on. " http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/How_to_do_a_Hard_Restart_on_Xbox_One My Kinect is randomly turning on and off/resetting, how do I fix it? Supposedly, some people have problems if their Xbox One is plugged into a power strip rather than directly into a wall. One troubleshooting step might be to correct that. I can not personally verify the information on this one as my stuff has been plugged into a surge protector for a year now with no problems. But FYI. http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/system/connect-power-supply Gamertag list is being maintained by Wiggly Wayne DDS: Wiggly Wayne DDS posted:I mentioned this in the previous threads but there's a rough list of gamertags here. Can't find a launch date but I believe it's Q2-Q3 2014 Right, but even Gears of Wars 3(or some other exclusive game) had dedicated servers down under. Surely they can get some sort of stopgap solution going for this game, especially considering how they are touting it as the biggest game launch and Australia was one of the few places where the bone outsold the ps4 in December.

There's a rumor going around that the $400 Kinect-less XB One package is a real thing that'll hit this year. CBOAT apparently has a rock-solid record when it comes to valid leaks, and there he is, confirming it.

There's not too much use to it at the moment aside from the voice navigation and auto sign in, which are cool but not worth $100. Maybe Kinect Sports and D4 will change that. The snap/unsnap button is just on the right at the main screen. Automatic sign-in via kinect is only cool if you completely ignore the fact that a single-user xbone should just sign-in to the only loving account on it anyway without having to try and awkwardly get the camera to identify you. Sometimes it works instantly, other times I can sit there for 30 seconds and nothing happens. EDIT: what was cool on 360 is that if you turned your console on with auto-sign in for an account enabled, it would sign in, and notify your friends that you're online. I'd use this to get my console booted up, go grab a drink and come back to a party/game invite ready to go. with neither of those things happening it is frustrating to try and organise games. Plenty of times I have been playing battlefield alone to then get a notification mid-game that (friend) has joined (server) and I think 'well obviously they didnt know I came online, or they didnt know i was playing' the new dashboard is good, but the multiplayer poo poo is multiple steps backward. hopefully this upcoming update fixes it. I can't say I have any issue with it, and I'm super glad that a third of the first page isn't dedicated to ads like it still is on the 360. Well, neither was the 360 at this point in it's lifecycle. Marketing and advertising are big things for Microsoft, from what they've said, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them include more in future updates, it is nice that there's not too many now, though. I was pleasantly surprised by that when I saw the UI for the first time, not so much by the usability, but I've never been a big voice and motion control guy for UI level stuff.

Realized tonight that for auto login to work, Kinect not only has to see you, but you have to be holding the controller with the IR blinkers pointed at the Kinect. So if anyone's having issues with it flat out not recognizing you, try that. I tended to not pick the controller up when turning it on for Netflix, so auto sign-in never worked. Now I patronizingly wave it at the Kinect, which it seems to grasp, though I feel the sarcasm is lost on it. EDIT: Wait, does it handle it differently if you turn it on via voice and never turn on a controller? And if it does, why the gently caress can't it find me without the controller even if I turn it on with one? Shalinor fucked around with this message at 05:48 on Feb 14, 2014 |

So if anyone's having issues with it flat out not recognizing you, try that. I tended to not pick the controller up when turning it on for Netflix, so auto sign-in never worked. I tested this just now, just to make sure, and it was able to auto-sign me in whether or not I had a controller in my hand. Also didn't matter if I turned it on via voice, or via controller and put the controller down before it came on. Maybe you should go back through the setup for it? The only time it doesn't recognize me is if I am laying on the couch with my face partially obscured by my laptop.
