That is a hell of a deal right there. The only thing I see missing is Ultimate Fallout which follows the Death of Spider-Man story. I mean it even includes Ultimate Six and Requiem. Yes if you plan on reading these you cannot beat this value period. Probably one of the greatest long term comic runs ever.

Also, since that's 199 issues there I guess that tells us what gets us to USM #200

EDIT: It is missing a few issues.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1/2
Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special (which is pretty much not in continuity but it may be part of the issue #150 they have there as it was reprinted in that issue)
Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1-3

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #16.1

And of course Spider-Men #1-5

The Comixology changes made me think of this article: http://www.wired.com/2013/09/ev-williams-xoxo/

The key to making a fortune online, Williams told the XOXO crowd, is to remove extra steps from common activities as he did with Blogger.

“Here’s the formula if you want to build a billion-dollar internet company,” he said. “Take a human desire, preferably one that has been around for a really long time…Identify that desire and use modern technology to take out steps.”

I understand that the guy who founded Blogger isn't at quite the same level as the guy who founded Amazon, but the dude makes a good point. Additional steps were added to a previously streamlined process which is both counterintuitive and frustrating. The steps now required are really no less than pirating - although you don't have to create an account and enter payment info into Piratebay.
It's still easier than pirating. To get Comixology comics to my iPad, I can still do it all on that iPad. To get pirated comics, I need another computer to do most of the work from.

And yay Image!

Awful.

What gets me is this panel in particular:

The art in the issue this panel's from was done by Dan Jurgens, and was comprised of a single splash panel for every page. That said, think about the circumstances in that shot. Superman and Doomsday are going at each other full-tilt, Lois is ostensibly reporting on the battle, and she's roughly three inches from a monster that is so powerful that it's killing Superman in front of her and the rest of the world. I recognize that Jurgens was trying to evoke a level of grandiosity for what was an unprecedented story in comic history, but to me this panel just underlines a deficiency in the art and storytelling that I have trouble getting past. Lois is literally closer to Doomsday than even Superman is. Yes, the writer and artist are trying to communicate how Superman is coming to terms with the fact that he's going to have to go to extreme lengths to stop Doomsday, but there has to be a better way to convey that than putting Lois within arm's reach of a monster that is battering Superman to death.

I guess the story's interesting as a novelty, but it really hasn't aged well, in my opinion.

It's not a great story, though the final part being all splash pages was part of a longer-term storytelling plan in that as the battle intensified through however many issues it was (five or six?), there were fewer and fewer panels per page until the actual death issue which was just a bunch of splash pages. Granted, it didn't work as well as it should, especially if read individually, but the iea would be neat in an OGN by some really great creators.

X-tinction Agenda and X-cutioner's Song: Less good, but I think they're both kinda worth reading. X-tinction Agenda is right at the tail end of Claremont's X-Men run, and also has some issues by Louise Simonson, Liefeld and I think Whilce Portacio? I forget who did the X-Factor art. I read X-cutioner's Song for the first time recently, and while it's a little bit drawn out and some bad art, it's not too bad overall. Some early Greg Capullo art on X-Force.

X-Tinction Agenda has art by Liefeld (New Mutants), Jim Lee (Uncanny X-Men), and Jon Bogdanove (X-Factor). It's, um, uneven, though I find the story miles better than X-Cutioner's Song which probably has better art overall.

Ehhhhh not really. The classic ones were pretty violent and the current ones aren't really much better. I'd almost say they can be worse than superhero comics at times since writers aren't afraid to have robot get beheaded or whatever.

I want to get into digital. Is the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9" a great tablet for comics? What is "the best?"
I guess at this point a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 would be best due to its size. If you're not keen to spending $1000 on a tablet/computer, then a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 followed by an iPad Air or Galaxy Tab S 10.5. Any smaller and they can become difficult to read, even with a high resolution screen, though 8.9" is probably right at the smallest comfortable size.

I'd personally recommend a true Android tablet or iPad over a Kindle Fire just because the ecosystems are much better, but if all you plan to do with it is read comics, it'll serve you fine.

How's that? How is it past the point Hickman leaves? Just reading about the recent part where they let Alan Moore insert his snake god stuff in somehow, it sounds like an interesting thing.
Starts off okay, gets a bit better after Hickman leaves, then becomes very repetitive after it's clear his plot notes ran out. It also has a lot of gore for gore's sake, it seems. I dropped it after issue 15.

The Windows 8 comiXology app is a horrible mess that should be taken out back and shot

You can probably half rear end it with metro Internet Explorer but I'd recommend a good 16:9 Android tablet instead.
Most Android tablets are 16:10, which is slightly better than 16:9 or 4:3 for single pages, but 4:3 is by far the best for spreads. Honestly, 16:10/9 above like 8" for a tablet kind of sucks unless the vast majority of your usage is watching movies.

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

No 10" tablet can display a comic page at full size since they are 12.55" diagonally, unless all you read is manga.

Just to be obnoxious, a modern comic is 6.875"x10.5" giving an aspect ratio of 1.53 (with a double page being 1.31).

16:9 is 1.78
16:10 is 1.6
4:3 is 1.33

I read my comics on an iPad, and I have no trouble at all reading a double page spread on it.
