Ahoy, folks and/or newcomers! As an introduction, let’s elaborate on this subforum’s purpose or what-have-you. From the old rules thread…:

Slowbeef posted:

"Let's Plays" are video game playthroughs documented or recorded for the internet, usually with commentary. Here you will find a wide variety of commentators and artists bringing their own unique styles and approaches to the the medium of playing a video game.
Now, this subforum gets quite a lot of foot-traffic. Before zipping off to enjoy a thread or video, please mind the rules! If there are any questions/elaboration needed, you can contact Fedule, JordanKai, or myself for further information.

Rules
  • The subforum is strictly for Let’s Plays and relevant topics.
Got something more-in-line with general Let’s Play discussion? Pop in to the Sandcastle and bring it up! It’s the thread for test posts as well as general miscellaneous chatter.

  • Read the other rules threads!
Being a part of SomethingAwful, Let's Play is subject to all Games forum and General SA forum rules. Please also bear these rules in mind, too.

  • NO HENTAI GAMES. This is non-negotiable.

  • No White Knighting.
This applies to white knighting an LPer. If someone has a valid critique of an LP, let the LPer respond and defend themselves. Basically, no weird bandwagoning or anything like that :v: Constructive criticism is a good thing (provided it’s valid and you’re not a jerk about it).

  • Don’t spoil stuff ahead of the LP! (unless the LPer allows it)
If the LPer wants, they can place a No Spoilers rule on their LP thread. Just be sure to put it in the OP and draw attention to it so that it stands out.

Provided the OP allows it, tagged spoilers are fine.

  • No begging for donations!
Don’t shill for donations, be they personal, charity-minded, or otherwise. That said, if a charity is in-mind and you think it should be exempt from this, bring it up with a moderator.

  • Don’t dump or re-post previously-completed LPs.
Barring a high-quality LP, posting a finished LP is frowned upon.

  • Do not make a Pokemon LP.
A moratorium is in effect. Don't even try. If you think you can justify being an exception to this (ie: a great idea, unique approach, etc), then send one of the mods a message about it first.

This rule does NOT count for Pokemon-like games like Digimon or Monster Rancher.

Posting Etiquette
  • Do not make low-content posts.
This inludes “WHERE’S AN UPDATE :saddowns:” or “ooh an update”. These posts don’t contribute to the conversation and are pointless.

  • Report bad posts.

  • Don’t be creepy.
Kind of on a far end of the White Knight spectrum. If you really like an LPer, that’s cool. Just don’t be… Weird. Y’know?

  • Avoid embedding Youtube videos. (Spoiler titles, thumbnails, etc are a concern)

  • Please only use spoiler tags for actual spoilers and not fake spoiler-gags.

  • Don't tell people you are an accomplished LPer from YouTube or another LP forum.
    No one cares.

  • Want to make an LP? Great!
Before doing so, however, you should definitely look at the LP Sandcastle.

The Sandcastle is meant to give a pass/fail sort of once-over of an LP. It lets you test out your work-flow and presentation. If there’s a glaring technical issue or a commentary problem (or just a problem with the LP as a whole), it’s better to have it ironed out here rather than making a thread, only for it to implode.

It isn’t mandatory, but if you’re new to LPing, you should absolutely use the Sandcastle.

  • The three month rule has been removed! But low-effort threads are subject to being gassed if they are outright bad threads.
We used to have a three-month rule around here (meaning a new game wouldn't be open for LP until three months after its release). It was largely put up so we would avoid getting DAY ONE LP WHOO LOOKIE HERE sorts of threads, and encourage people to take the time to put more effort into their Let's Plays. But with Early Access games everywhere and having to create so many exceptions to the rule, it became kind of pointless to stand by it.

So what's to stop there being a rash of low effort day-one-LPs going forward? The same as usual: if a thread is extremely low-effort and uninteresting, violating our other rules or guidelines (blatant attempts to get channel views / subscribers, low-effort Let's Plays from newly registered users, the usual sort of stuff we try to avoid here) the poster is liable to get punished and their thread gassed. If someone comes in and LPs a brand new game and makes it a fun experience? Then hey, no problem there :v: Remember: making your Let's Play interesting is what's going to make people give it more than a precursory look in the first place.

On the same topic, if you don't like a thread or think someone is just trying to jump on every new game, please just rate the thread 1 and move along.
