I've got a digitakt that I've been having alot of fun with, but after jamming with a buddies microkorg and dx200 im itching for some sort of synth to pair with it. Im a bit torn between the digitone and the dx reface.. the reface is like half the price and has keys, but im already used to elektrons workflow and due to the very weird way my setup is the digitone would fit a lot better then then reface.

I currently put my takt on top of my djing setup when I want to use it, and it just so happens its the perfect size to fit on a turntable between the spindle, light, and power knob, to where it only has a mm or two so it can't move. If I get the tone it'll fit perfectly on the other turntable and so I can just set the both of them on top of my setup to jam. If I get the reface ill need to set it on top of my desk awkwardly off to the side and won't be facing my speakers when I use it. I suppose I could try to finangle some sort of stand to put it over the turntables and mixer, but it would be awkwardly high and butting up against my shelves.

Are there any other similarly sized synth modules that would fit in this space?

The pressing action is pretty light, but I hear you on having a two pound weight on one side of my platter.

Unfortunately using a cover isn't really an option either, as the record shelf is 3 high and already at the comfortable end of high for me. A cover just brings it into the stratosphere.

I'll just give in an get some extra long cables so I can sit at my desk

Bought a used sh01a to pair with the digitakt. When it heated up it smelled like animal pee. Returned it and got a blofeld, which is awesome except now on day 3 I'm running into the infamous "hosed up encoder" problem, on a brand new synth. If the firmware update doesn't change this then it looks like I'm back to cruising for synth modules on Amazon:(

The firmware update fixes it usually, sometimes they need more debounce, the fix isn’t hard.
Like most waldorfs it’s worth dealing with the quirks, imo. You’ll also run into patch-dependent lagginess in multi mode, patch-dependent (unknowable via the UI) polyphony limits, MIDI sync’d LFO and FX that don’t or do so wrongly. All regular rear end Waldorf.

No idea why softsynths and workstation boards are so popular. :v:

Whats debounce? I feel a little more reassured after your post. Im not trying to push it with huge amounts of voices, modulation, fx, etc, I just bought it because it seemed like a very flexible and affordable polysynth. My planned workflow will be to make baselines and mono stuff with it to resample into the digitakt, and then pads and leads to record in stereo when I record my jams onto ableton.

For my first bit of hardware I bought a digitakt with my stimmy $ last year. I felt like it had a bit of a learning curve- it wasn't as "immediate" as other gear ive used, and it took me a good amount of practice and reading to get used to it. The manual doesn't include all the key combinations and theres all sorts of weird tricks and workarounds I've found for things by looking online. I do really like it now though and can work pretty quickly, but I still feel like I've scratched the surface of it.

My goal with it was record everything into ableton and work from there, and its been great for that. Having each of the 8 tracks come in on a seperate channels, along with the master L/R and the 2 inputs, all over USB, is real nice. The sampler is real easy to use too and ive sampled records, the TV, my phone, etc into it for use.

The main thing I dont like is the lack of a song mode. You can chain patterns but the chains aren't saved. You could sort of hack it with extensive use of conditional triggers, resampling, etc, but its not very straightforward. An MPC, polyend tracker, or (i believe) the octotrack all have song modes.

For something to pair it with you don't necessarily have to stay in the elektron system. The digitakt has 8 midi tracks it can send, so you can use the sequencer and LFO of the digitakt to control other hardware. That being said, I havent used any of the other elektron stuff but ive heard its all good.

Incidentally, Empress just opened orders for the Euroburo last Thursday. It's pretty much a Eurorack Zoia with an optional desktop enclosure. I've been waiting on this for a good year or so and ALMOST broke and bought a regular Zoia. They pretty much announced it just as I was starting to be tempted again.

Looks like it ships on the 17th, I'm pretty stoked. Not just because it'll be a nice addition to my euro rig, but because it's so dang portable on its own. I'm gonna take it off into the woods and make a bunch of generative patches in my hammock

$650 for the unit, another hundo for the optional enclosure.

I'm really trying to avoid GAS but this thing is so compact and flexible that I think I'm gonna save up for a bit and sell my cirrus to replace with this. Then I can have a crazy multi fx pedal for djing and synth work and an additional synth to pair with my blofeld

does the digitakt have timestretch? otherwise you could possibly get a used octatrack mk1 for… well not cheap but

It doesn't have a proper timestretch mode, but people have figured out a workaround by filling the pattern with trigs and using the lfo to restart the sample at each trig at the proper timing. Its a bit convoluted but not difficult to do.

My entire fm philosophy is "gently caress with things until I get a uk bass sort of sound" and I can say I've reached this point easily enough.

Oh cool, the idea of having a mini MnM box in the form of a digitakt like elektron box is exciting, and would compliment the digitakt well. I assume it only has one LFO per track? I saw someone going over it, and it looked the same as the digitakt LFO, but with destinations for what seemed like most of the synth parameters, I think they were using the wavetable synth, and used the LFO to change the wave shape, if I remember correctly. If there is only one LFO I hope they add it in an update, and like you said, the Sid and mnm stuff would be great. The person who made that MnM video said it’s basically just fm, with an LFO on the pitch I think.

Or maybe I should just try to build something that can do the MnM fm stuff in max/msp instead …
Elektrons website says 2x assignable lfos per track, so like the current patch for the digitakt i guess

I just got a poly beebo and aside from these loose rear end encoders I'm in love. It took a few minutes of twiddling with it but once figured out the controls I was banging out patches.

My goal for now is to build a big multipatch of dj style fx and use the footswitches to be able to turn on and off individual fx. I think I can get 5 or 6 between them all? I'd ideally like to get the encoders mapped to parameters in each modules as well without having to click on them individually, but I havent gotten that far into it yet

God help me, I just bought an E352 Cloud Terrarium, and also sold my last MTG deck for $4000, with a plan of getting a Rackbrute ($279 through a deal through my employer) and slamming about $1800 worth of poo poo into it instantly. I don't really need more voice modules at this point but Morphagene is great, and VCV rack has me trying out various effects.

I'd really like a hardware reverb module oriented towards ambient. Valhalla Supermassive is an awesome program and if I could get that in a module I would instantly buy it. Any suggestions?
Get a beebo and you'll have that and much much more

Anyone with experience using the poly beebo? I have an idea where I'd go midi out from my digitakt to trigger the euclidian rhythm module in beebo and then have the euclidian rhythm module send midi to my blofeld.

So I'm going midi out of digitakt into the midi in on the beebo, and in the beebo its midi to cv to trigger the euclidian rhythm module, with each of its 4 triggers going to a cv to midi module, and all the cv to midi modules going to midi out, into the blofeld. The blofeld receives notes from the digitakt but it seems like the beebo isn't doing anything. Ive managed to get the euclidian rhythm module to trigger synth modules within the beebo in this manner, but im not sure why its not passing through.

Edit: figured it out. I needed to set midi channels in the cv to midi modulez

- Ideally have serviceable built-in effects (space is a premium)

I already have a hydrasynth which ticks almost all the boxes but it doesn't fit in my living room :( Any recs?
Blofeld is cheap and ticks most boxes and is multitimberal to 16 different patches with 25 total voices, but the built in fx do kind of suck

The quick and easy way to record a sample and adjust the start time of it is really appealing, also lukewarm take but I hate the standard piano keyboard layout and wish more things had plain chromatic buttons.

Sad price cause I won't have that kinda money to spend anytime soon (I'll keep an eye out in 2 years for one someone spilled a white claw on for cheap on reverb), none of my guitars are even that expensive. BUT as someone who might only ever buy one synth type thing, I could maybe justify the price more than the regulars in this thread adding it to their gear mountain. Idk it looks neat and more accessible than an op1

Quick question: I'm interested in getting an Akai Professional MPK Mini MKII midi controller to mess around with, with Ardour as my DAW (due to it being free). I'm pretty clueless on how to hook all of this up, do I also need to buy a preamp or can I just directly connect the Akai Mini to my PC w/ the USB cable and use it in Ardour?

A midi controller doesn't make any of its own sounds, it just controls other devices/software. So yeah you're on the right path with your latter idea. You would hook it up via the USB cable, download any drivers/updates you need, and then have to go in Ardour and figure out how to make it recognize the MPK. Its usually pretty simple to do but ive never used ardour so idk the specifics

Just wanted to be pedantic here for any noobs and say that VSTs aren't soley instruments. A VST is like its own little program you can run inside other programs as a plug in (tho.many are also standalone) and theres a shitload of different VSTs that can do different things, like virtual instruments, vsts for effects, midi generating vsts, reverb, eq, etc. Pretty much any piece of audio gear or midi function can be a VST. Even entire DAWs can run as VSTs inside other DAWs.

Its fine! On the 8 midi out tracks you can do up to 4 notes per "step", but on the 8 internal tracks you can only do 1 note per step. With the recent update it has a bunch of scales you can select from so you can jam out in keyboard mode and be entirely in key. Its a pretty nice brain tbh. I was using it to control my blofeld and beebo and had a blast
