Dr. Arbitrary posted:Is there a different meaning to Technocrat than I know? I thought it meant government by technical experts, e.g., you'd have public health experts in charge of public health. You're correct. The problem is that governance via scientific and engineering expertise means creating policy that adheres to these goofy loving models that sometimes work, and sometimes don't. Even for something as simple as for-profit widget creation, huge corporations are surprisingly hit and miss. Like Microsoft - yeah they dominate some markets, but the Zune? Bing? Do you want a healthcare law as well considered as Bing? As lovely as our current governance system is, it's a kludgy dirty ad-hoc thing that reflects real human behaviors like compromise and bargaining and bureaucracy which manages to catch a surprising amount of edge cases and conditionals without being explicitly designed for such. It would be way the hell worse if some dickhead CEO just started dictating policy one day that will stick around for decades. Nessus posted:Don't sully the good name of technocracy with Google, the technocrats were basically socialists with a thing for water projects and had a motorcycle corps. The 21st century definition of a technocrat is pretty much someone (not necessarily directly elected) who will conduct relatively unpopular economic reforms that are considered objectively "unassailable." I think it is an expansion of the idea that experts, not necessarily technical/scientific experts, should run a government.
