Jump to latest update

In 2009, Volition made Red Faction Guerilla. RFG was an open world game about fighting overwhelming odds to free mars. It was generally really well received, but there were criticisms about the story and the difficulty. Some people wanted to see more emphasis on stealth elements and strategem. Just about everyone loved the open ended exploration and freeform destruction.

Volition's approach to tackling these problems was to say gently caress IT and make a completely different game: Red Faction Armageddon.

Armageddon is a totally straightforward shooter that advances from arena to arena in a linear fashion. The plot is hard to follow, and requires watching the SyFy prequel movie to get the whole picture. It got generally positive reviews, but people expecting another open world game felt betrayed. At the time, I feel like there was a general fatigue surrounding shooters, too. Portal 2 had come out earlier in the year, and Duke Nukem Forever came out later. And for the section of the audience that was in it for the open world, Infamous 2 came out the same day.

Despite it's poor sales, this game is actually REALLY GOOD and you should play it. I mean dang. The guns that fire bullets are a total joke, but they are outnumbered greatly by the really fun guns that shoot things that are not bullets, such as bombs, plasma, black holes, and magnets. The melee weapon is fun to use, and often destroys the floor you're standing on. The enemies are fun toys for you to throw around once you get some good equipment, but they'll still kick your rear end if you approach them wrong or get disoriented. The linear maps mean the pace stays brisk, and you're always moved forward through new areas where all the buildings are still intact.

This game is almost certainly more interesting and fun than you thought it was. Hopefully, this LP will give you a look at a great title that fell under the wheels despite the publisher's best efforts.

Audio logs, and other things:
I'll do bonus videos for the audio logs. Any time Mason or his AI say anything, it interrupts the audiolog's playback, so it really breaks up the pace of the game. Especially considering I already have to pick up salvage and things.

Don't spoil plot things if you can help it. I dunno, it ruins some peoples fun or something.

As part of the promotion of the game, Syfy made a loving PREQUEL MOVIE. Unfortulately, knowledge of the prequel movie is required to understand the plot makes everything a lot more confusing. I've heard it's pretty good, but it won't be spoiling anything for you if you go find a summary of the movie. It'll help you understand what's going on, too snap your frail psyche like a twig, probably.

Update 1: Prologue time
Video 1: Pyrrhic Victory
Crazy people are trying to destroy mars. Mason is hard as bricks and drives towards the terraformer in a van full of vin diesel clones. A bolt of lightning gently unwelds the door, and he falls out because hard space marines with no hair don't wear seatbelts. He then destroys a ton of critical infrastructure and fights a crab.

Video 2: Terraformed
Mason enters the terraformer and blows up a lot of really expensive looking turbines. Then he fights a revenant from Doom. The only winner is whoever wanted the Terraformer broken. Mostly Adam Hale.

New things this update:
Assault rifle: you put the bullets in the bottom using a magazine, then they leave out the front. Snore.
Hammer: A one hit kill on most things with aggressive aim assist, an area of effect, and a lunge attack. Hammer friend best friend.
Plasma cannon: The first good weapon of the game, if you don't count the hammer. Charges up and shakes the crosshairs, but fires a ball of hell that moves in a straight line and explodes three times before stopping.
Repair tool: Who would have thought putting things back together could be fun.
Impact: It's like a runaway train of fun

I loved RF:G but never played this because of everyone whining about it not being RF:G. I guess they were dumb and I'm going to pick this up the next time it's on Steam for nearly free as this looks like a blast to play.

Also digging your presentation style which is entirely appropriate for a Red Faction game.

I once used the hammer when I had an enemy on the level directly below me. The secondary is an overhead swing and goes through the ground. Good times. I'm looking forward to the carnage in future levels.

Enjoying the LP so far. I've never played a Red Faction game so I'll follow along closely.

If there's one gripe I'd make it's that during the cutscenes it can be hard to make out what everyone's saying since you're talking over them on occasion. I mean, it doesn't seem like a masterclass in video game stories so far but it could lead to some confusion down the line if we've got little to no idea of why things are happening. However, when you do talk over the cutscenes it's usually amusing and/or interesting. Is there a subtitles option?

I watched the vids a few days ago though so you may in fact be already doing this. In which case I am not a smart man. :downs: Sorry for my rambling!

I like to think that when you passed by Hale before the insecto-bot fight he got up and started whistling nonchalantly the second the door closed behind you. Sadly the game is a bit serious in the story department for a game where you have an arsenal of disintegrating weapons and a magic undo button on your wrist.

The first two games were recently LP'd by Lazyfire if you want to see what they're like. The terrain destruction in the first starts out pretty impressive but drops off as the game progresses and is basically a gimmick in the second. RF2 also has practically nothing to do with the other RF games and is set on Earth.

Y'know, I'm kind of sad that I wrote this game off - I remember seeing one or two trailers, then the ZANY SECRET WEAPON (which I did get a kick out of, I admit), then just 'meh' - got I will admit, being an incarnate god of destruction in those kind of environments does look like a lot of fun, and I did love RF: Guerilla. Will eagerly be following along!

I haven't seen those! There's also an lp of Guerilla by TyrantSabre. I'm sure I'm going to say a lot of factually inaccurate stuff about the first game over the course of this LP.

SPEAKING OF WHICH

Update 2: A triple flip off the deep end
Video: The real Armageddon starts here Guest starring Gus Hobbleton!
Darius Mason rescues a jerk from his girlfriend, and uncorks an eldritch ruin. Sickening violence, only show to cool children.

New things this update:
Magnet gun: The best gun in the game, and quite possibly the best gun in any game. Certainly the most creative weapon I've ever seen in a shooter. The thread is named in honor of this amazing piece of hardware.
Pistols: Handed to you at the same time as the magnet gun. Presumably to make the magnet gun seem even more powerful.
Shotgun: This is the only standard weapon that's actually really fun to use, but it's also a total deathtrap.

Bonus things:
When you die in certain places, you get a special loading screen that replaces the generic one. The special loading screens have tips for how not to die in that specific area, and are often used in boss encounters. Here's the one for the scout walker in the last update:

I should probably start to list the cast soon.

I'd be inclined to agree that the pacing at this point is pretty bad. All in all, the approach to bastion is one of the least fun parts of the game, and certainly contains the most badly designed section. Which happens to be in this update!

I do find that the fun of this game is mostly that the strangest way to kill an enemy is usually the optimal one. What weapons were you using in this section?

Update 3: Get Pumped™ for Shithole mining town!
Video: Great big convoy
Darius is chased away from the main plot of the game by a boulder. He gets it back with the help of the most worthless convoy you've ever seen. The plasma cannon is back, but the reunion is bittersweet, for it is reintroduced just in time for the worst designed part of the entire game.

New things this update:
Charge Launcher:It's satchel charges fired out of a gun. This is a really safe weapon to take, because even small ammo pickups will give you bombs for it. It also combos really well with the magnet gun.
Enforcer: Fires "homing bullets". It's basically an assault rifle that fires lovely blue bees. They seem to avoid enemies? It's really hard to tell.
Plasma cannon again: IT'S STILL GOOD
Assault rifle again: IT'S STILL BORING

It's all uphill from here! Next update has a thing that totally redeems the loving tunneling machine.

Having watched the prequel movie the instant it came out, I assert that it is beautifully and sublimely terrible, and in fact confuses the plot of RFA more than it clarifies. RFA has a number of points that may make you go "huh, I must be missing some background here". Only a few of those are even tangentially related to the film, much less directly addressed by it. Then come the parts where the film contradicts the game, introduces the Irishman with a hitting stick, and apparently moves to the Chernobyl exclusion zone...
The movie being Adam Hale's origin story? If it weren't for the name you wouldn't even recognize him.
Understanding of RFA is best served by knowing what happens in RF1 and RFG, and that RFA occurs a couple generations after RFG.
The best thing out of the Red Faction movie is the line "I will kill someone with this." Best served with alcohol.

That said, I adore this game. Afinostux isn't kidding about the hammer. As a modern Volition game, the protagonist is the melee monster. What the Masons lack in Saint-style showboating, they make up for in overwhelming brute force. The quick attack practically has you pouncing on the aliens to crush them, but once the hammer's out, you are outright superior to enemies up to a rather alarming size. Even those Berserkers. Up until the most ridiculous weapons, I found that that it's fastest to magnet them to right in front of my feet, apply hammer, and just soak the deathblast.

"Man, nobody was shooting, right? That guy just flew into that building." Despite the fact that properly oxygenated EDF pilots did this with cliffs all the time in RFG, I stand by my theory that someone entered some numbers wrong when setting up the terraformer in the first place, and as a result, everyone on Mars just isn't getting enough oxygen to their brains.

RF1 let you tunnel through the ground with explosives, and some manmade walls and such were destructible. RF2... let's just say I got stuck in one spot for a very long time because I completely forgot destructible terrain was supposed to be a thing.

Concerning the White Faction, the Red Faction is named after, well, the revolutionary Reds of the Russian civil war. Which also had a counterrevolutionary White movement. A suprisingly thoughtful detail as far as the film goes.

I guess I was just hoping the writers had their poo poo together a little more than it seems like they did. Nice catch on the white faction thing, though. I missed that one.

In a way, I'm almost glad the movie makes things more confusing. The existence of the movie certainly makes things more confusing all on its own.

I didn't realise how useful the compass can be! Loving your commentary.

The game does have subtitles, it would be a good idea to turn them on, especially since you do talk over the cutscenes.

Are you planning on doing the bonus videos for the audio logs any time soon, or doing them all at the end? (I don't think anyone would want to listen to 50 audio logs all in one go after the game has finished.)

Like Samuel and Tiggum, I found the convoy part of the game to be a slog, as well as the following section, and I stopped somewhere during the next part. I fully intended to go back to it though, because the first part of the game was awesome, loved blasting though everything with the plasma cannon, destroying walkways and then rebuilding them, and smashing aliens against each other with the magnet gun.

The one thing that gave me fun in this section was the weapon locker, which allowed me to get my hands on the pre-order DLC weapons. The pre-order DLC actually did their job, they caused me to preorder the game rather than wait for the price to come a while after release. Normally I'm resistant to such things... but DLC that lets me shoot lasers, lightning and fire? I couldn't miss out on that.

In the US there were two different preorder bonuses depending on where you got it from, a "Commando pack" and a "Recon pack", each giving you a different outfit for your character and two extra guns. But here in the UK they didn't do any exclusive deals with any particular shops, so instead we got the "Commando and Recon Limited Edition" which included both outfits and all four bonus weapons, and it was available pretty much anywhere if you were preordering.

You know those crappy semi-auto dual pistols? The Commando DLC pack includes LASER PISTOLS. They fire continuous beams so you can just hold the trigger down, and they have a nice burning/vaporization effect when they kill an enemy. And they have the most badass sound effect.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGVzAs8o-rk

Unfortunately they are piss weak - they are fine against the little bugs and those ninja bug guys that jump around, but useless against the bigger enemies.

The other Commando pack weapon is the Plasma Thrower. The flame effect loks like ordinary fire, but it is also effective at destroying metal structures. Cause, y'know, plasma.

In the Recon pack you get the XNG-5000, which is a grenade launcher that causes things within a certain radius to disintegrate with a purple nano effect. You also get the Arc Welder, yup that gun from Red Faction Guerilla, doesn't damage structures but it hits and stuns multiple enemies at the same time.

Video of all four in use, not against any enemies unfortunately.

None of them are more useful than the standard weapons that the game gives you. In fact the charge launcher, magnet gun and plasma cannon are probably better. But the lasers are better than the ordinary crap pistols, and the arc welder is better than the assault rifle or shotgun.

You can just spam fire/detonate constantly to work it like an explosive shotgun, and it's worth its weight in gold scrap points when those warrior bugs start leaping up onto stalactites in bunches because you can just burn them all down with one or two shots :allears:.

Yeah, hands down the best game in the series for a number of reasons. Every steam sale the entire Red Faction Bundle goes on sale for like 14 dollars, definitely a good buy for Guerrilla alone, but the first two games have their charms as well. Actually, the APC you enter the level with sort of disappears somehow before you get on the monorail, then is replaced with the surviving truck from that scripted sequence at the end. My guess is they decided that it was too hard to maneuver on the monorail platform with two trucks parked there, but wanted to keep the second truck for the end of level sequence. Presumably so Mason could talk with the marines more before the end of the level.

They'll lock onto anything they have line of sight to in about a 45 degree cone in front of you. There's a miss in the video during the monorail segment, so I assume their tracking isn't perfect.
