Well Plex is pretty clear about your media organization, and I did as you suggested last night and because all my media is in one folder that was no sorting by movie/tv show/etc. With quite a few files that makes it tedious to do all the scrolling via tablet or other mobile device.

I know Plex doesn't create those folder structures or have an ability to help auto-sort files, hence my original question

Filebot is pretty decent.

On another note, does anyone know of a program that can pull subtitles for me? The built in plex opensubtitles plugin basically never works, and using plex tools to download subs is tedious as hell. I miss this so drat much from xbmc...

What media server version are you using?

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but XBMC has very good built-in subtitle support now. If I had to have subtitles for everything I wouldn't hesitate to use xbmc over plex.

Is the plex pass worthwhile?

It depends on if you want the features it provides. Overall I would say yes but not knowing anything you are trying to do is pretty impossible to make a recommendation. Plex has a weird thing where paid Plexpass memebers get access to early things to beta-test, and then things get released to the unpaid masses.

Looking to replace my parents HP Microserver with something that can transcode for Plex. I see from earlier this spring the Dell t20 would be a good deal, is there anything similar or better than this?

I prefer to not build it myself. I would like 4-6 hard drive bays if possible.

Playlists are now available to everyone (finally!). I made a playlist with all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in order that's playing right now in the background.

Plex also added some new Movies Library features. PlexPass subscribers now have the option to play trailers (either upcoming releases or trailers from movies in your library) before a movie you choose to watch. Trailers are streamed via metadata agents. Again automatically streaming trailers is a PlexPass feature only. If you want this feature, but don't have PlexPass, you have to manually add trailers for movies in your library.

You can also now include extras (behind the scenes, trailers, deleted scenes, etc.) to all the movies in your library. So far I haven't been able to get this feature to work with local media, as have a few others I've read online.

Read full update release info here: https://blog.plex.tv/2014/07/31/frankly-trailer-dont-give-playlist/

Holy poo poo extras its about loving time. It sounds pretty Plex-like that the feature is pretty broken, I have been trying to get Plex sync to work better and its a nightmare so I gave up on it and am just copying the whole mkv to my device manually.

Just stumbled across the new subtitle addon, might be worth looking into. Ever since opensubtitles addon decided to download 20 different subtitles for my movies I have been looking for something else. To get rid of them you need to remove the library and re-add it

The Dell PowerEdge T20 you mentioned I'd say is the equivalent to the TS140. A T20 with a Haswell Pentium that will be serving content from Plex directly (i.e., your clients will Direct Play media) would be perfect.

Since you mentioned transcoding duties though, I'd personally get the T20 that has a Xeon E3 as I wouldn't recommend anything less than a Core-i3 if your Plex server is going to need to transcode content to multiple devices. That said, I have read that the Pentium G3220 is a pretty capable CPU, and could be enough if the server is only transcoding one or two streams maybe. What front end/client devices are your parents using to access the Plex server?

iPad, Chromecast. Looking into it more I just might build it myself, thanks for looking though.

With a PlexPass and using the sync feature in iOS, is it possible to use that as an automatic way to sync video and transfer them to a computer (probably via iTunes)? Like, the VLC app lets you drag/drop video in iTunes under the apps tab, and if you go to another computer, go back to that screen in iTunes, you can drag those files out of there (off the phone) right onto the new computer. It's really handy. I just want to know if the Plex sync feature would allow the same type of behavior, just without requiring me to be physically at a computer / plugged in and in iTunes when transferring to the phone.

When you sync something to your mobile device it will transcode the file. I don't think this is what you are looking for, could you not just download the file via Plex/Web?

So I just discovered Plex yesterday and I'm really liking what it can do so far. The ability to just play whatever, wherever is pretty amazing so far. Trying to decide whether to buy the lifetime pass before the price hike.

Is there any kind of to-do list showing what they plan on working on in the future? The things it can't do right now that I'd really like to see are some form of Smart Playlist feature ala iTunes or other media players, and having more options set per-library rather than globally. I'd also like to see Audiobook, Podcast, Music Video, and Miscellaneous options added to their media types.. I really like the idea of using something like hpodder to grab podcasts, put them in a library that gets scanned on a more regular basis than everything else, which deletes stuff after it's viewed. Maybe something like that could be accomplished with plugins?

Does anyone know of any alternatives that compete with Plex in terms of automatic transcoding and media playback wherever that I should check out before dropping this kind of cash?

Mediabrowser is a direct competitor. Their setup is free server setup, with fees placed on mobile apps and paid plugins.

What does it mean that the PS4 app needs a separate server?

"No, really, when will it be available in my country? We really don’t have specific dates we can give you, it takes a while to work out all the details with Sony. Just know we’re working hard to make it available as widely as possible!
What about PlayStation® TV or PlayStation® Vita? Those devices have different software platforms, and we have no current plans to support them.
How long is the Plex Pass preview period? The preview period doesn’t last for a fixed amount of time. When the app is deemed ready to graduate, we throw a cap and gown on it.
Where are music, photos, and channels? We’re working hard to bring these features to the app (as well as the other apps which launched with video-only support).
Does it support Plex Home? There is no fast user switching yet, but you can sign into the app with any non-managed account and any restrictions set will be reflected.
Does the app support MKV? DTS? You can read this article to see all the details on supported media formats.
Does the app need a separate Plex Media Server? Yes, it does."
