Oh, I forgot one thing that tickles me a bit: Middle schoolers, who are abhorrent human beings, ask GOP candidates, who are abhorrent human beings, about real issues. The middle schoolers have an excuse such as hormones and still developing, but they come off looking so much better and thoughtful than the GOP candidates.

I guess this means that education is going to get another cut because the previous cuts still haven't killed critical thinking.

How strong is the Tea Party in North Carolina? Is there any chance of them shifting the politics so far to the right that independents start shifting Democrat?

There is some tea party presence, but there's no real tea party candidates. A lot of the politicians are old school/good ol' boys, and they're doing everything by the GOP narrative book. The voting districts were redrawn and everything is hosed, emphasis on everything.

The majority of the people aren't happy, but telling them to go out and vote about it is becoming increasingly difficult between the voter id bullshit, cutbacks on popular early voting programs, and general gerrymandering.

Bush's paintings are imperfect and look like a painting done by an amateur.

Zimmerman's paintings look like a Photoshop filter on a jpg with some hacky bullshit scrawled on it and carefully screenprinted onto a canvas.

Both of them are lazy as gently caress, but Bush's paintings actually show effort. Also, Bush didn't gun down an unarmed teenager in Florida.

So in motherfuckers who complain about taxes news, the Koch Brothers are literal cartoon villains. They basically back legislation to ban municipalities from running buses.

Yeah.

quote:

I don't have to tell you who the Koch brothers are. They're the Lannisters of America, using their money and influence to control the country from behind the scenes.

But at least we're allowed to understand the Lannister motives. The Koch brothers are basically messing with laws for the same reason George Mallory messes with mountains: because they're there.

In Tennessee, the Kochs have ruined a public work with an awful law, just because they could.

So Tennessee wanted a bus. A whole system of buses. A $174 million Bus Rapid Transit system to bring people to Nashville. Driving to Dollywood isn't good for the environment.

Whatever. The Koch brothers opposed the bus system because... well it's somewhat unclear why they opposed it. There was some talk that the buses weren't "safe," for bus passengers since the system involved mid-street drop offs. But the hypocrisy of people opposing buses out of safety concerns for the people who want to take the buses is a little beyond me.

There's a "takings" issue. Takings refer to the power of the government to take your private property for important government purposes. They don't "take" it, obviously. They pay you for it, usually a pretty good price. But you can see how Republicans get all "This Is Sparta" over this simple act of government power.

Still, the amount of property the government would have to buy for some bus stops is minimal. It's not enough to justify a multimillion dollar lobbying campaign against mass transit.

Searching around for an answer, I came across this excellent piece by Alex Pareene on Salon. It looks like the Koch brothers messed with Tennessee because Tennessee is a good place for them to express their power:

quote:

“With supermajorities in both houses,” [Andrew Ogles,of Americans for Prosperity] said, “Tennessee is a great state to pass model legislation that can be leveraged in other states.”

So, this is not “the Kochs” doing this, in the cartoonish sense of David or Charles calling up a henchman and saying “kill that new bus line in Nashville,” and then cackling and dipping an orphan in fracking runoff and using it to light a cigar. But this is the story of how billionaires dedicated to advancing an agenda at every level of government can do so with practically no one noticing until they’ve already won.
So the Koch brothers killed something just to watch it die.

That's politics, I guess, but here is the horrible law Tennessee now has as a result:

quote:

This amendment prohibits metropolitan governments and any transit authorities created by a metropolitan government from constructing, maintaining or operating any bus rapid transit system using a separate lane, or other separate right-of-way, dedicated solely to the use of such bus rapid transit system on any state highway or state highway right-of-way unless the project to do so is approved by the legislative body of the metropolitan government and by the commissioner of transportation. This amendment also prohibits such entities from loading or discharging passengers at any point within the boundary lines of a state highway or state highway right-of-way not adjacent to the right-hand, lateral curb line, or in the absence of curb lines, the right-hand, lateral boundary line or edge of the roadway.
For those playing along at home, that means that Tennessee Department of Transportation no longer has the authority to make bus lanes on the highway, and the placement of its bus stops is now being dictated to them by the Koch brothers. That's the law, now. This is like the Port Authority only being able to open the George Washington Bridge if Chris Christie says so.

Later, when the good people of Tennessee bitch about how "the government" can't get anything done, remember that the Koch brothers are writing the laws under which the government is allowed to operate.

Looks like both the UAW and VW are throwing in the rag in TN. I really can't blame them considering that the Koch Bros basically own the state and can throw money to make laws since it's a GOP stronghold.

quote:

(Reuters) - The United Auto Workers union on Monday said it was withdrawing its objection claiming undue outside political interference in the result of a February election it lost among workers at the Volkswagen AG plant in Tennessee.

UAW President Bob King, in a statement issued by the union on Monday, said the process of objecting to the National Labor Relations Board could have dragged on for months if not years.

King and the UAW announced the withdrawal on the morning of the scheduled start of an NLRB hearing in Chattanooga on the union's objection.

The UAW has had no success in trying to get workers at automotive plants owned by foreign companies in the U.S. South to agree to join the union in an area where membership has fallen over the last several decades. Volkswagen officials agreed not to work against the UAW and allowed the union direct access to workers at the plant during work hours, a rarity by companies in a UAW organizing drive, which he union hoped would increase its chances of victory.

But in a Feb 12-14 election, workers voted 712-to-626 against allowing the UAW to represent them.

"The unprecedented political interference by Gov. (Bill) Haslam, Sen. (Bob) Corker and others was a distraction for Volkswagen employees and a detour from achieving Tennessee's economic priorities," King said. "The UAW is ready to put February's tainted election in the rearview mirror and instead focus on advocating for new jobs and economic investment in Chattanooga."

During the election campaign, Republican Gov. Haslam and other Tennessee politicians threatened to cut off financial incentives to Volkswagen if the UAW were installed as labor representative of the workers. Corker, a U.S. senator and former mayor of Chattanooga, claimed during the vote that VW would not place additional work at the plant if the UAW won the election.

King said he would next try to take his case against what he called outside interference by politicians to Congress.

"The UAW will ask Congress to examine the use of federal funds in the state's incentives threat, in order to protect Tennessee jobs and workers in the future," the union statement said.

What are VW's plans moving forward? I know they wanted a union presence for streamlining of negotiations of labor and I remember one article speculating that not having a union would be a hindrance to expansion at the Tennessee plant.

AFAIK VW is going to keep the plant in Chattanooga, but stop investing in it actively. I wouldn't be surprised if they're currently shopping around for a place to drop a new plant in hopes that they could get an organized labor presence so that negotiations aren't a pain in the rear end. I think that SC might be on their radar since BMW and Hyundai already have manufacturing stood up there, but the entire southeast region is completely controlled by GOP Uberalles so who knows.

I'd be tickled if they wound up going to Detroit and wind up revitalizing the area.
