I liked the concept of the original game, but I quickly became lost in a tedium without progression. This was very early in the original game's Early Access period. Is it worth reengaging this game again? If so, should I go with the DLC or stick with vanilla Don't Starve?

The game has changed a lot since then, and it's possible to eventually win a game now so you have and end goal to work towards. For Reign of Giants, personally I think you should get it only if you get back into the base game and enjoy it. RoG mainly adds two new seasons you have to plan for (as opposed to just summer and winter in the base game) and a few new biomes with stuff in them. It makes the game noticeably more difficult, I think.
