It's spaceships. You can't just (easily) have W be "go forward" because there's three dimensional movement involved... not just changing your Z positioning, but also the angle at which your pointing to aim your weapons. The turning is definitely an issue at low levels (as you get more skills/gear it's drastically improved... unless you're flying a carrier or something), but it's part of the metagame of shield facings and firing arcs and such too. Which also explains why your weapons may not have been firing; torpedoes (for example) have a 90-degree firing arc, so if you have one mounted in a forward arc and an enemy's behind you or to your side you won't be able to fire it on them.

That said... yeah, Cryptic's tutorials are kinda lovely. I forget if there's any drastic configuration options like there are for ground, but you can change the keys around easily enough. I also recommend flying around outside earth spacedock a while to get a feel for it; you can hold down both mouse buttons to turn along with the camera, it might help get the idea across more.

I know I'm sounding like an annoyed sperg who is basically saying "But WoW does it!!!111one", but I can hop on a flying mount in WoW, move, turn any direction I want instantly, and stop on a dime, and I never had anything approaching the issues I'm having. I didn't even get out of what I think was the tutorial (I was trying to find some cloaked Klingon ship when my spergstration got too high), but like I said, I got frustrated quickly.

I suppose I'll try it again in a bit, but really I was just looking for something to sate my need for entertainment and I was in a bit of a ST kick, and my issues turned me off.

control direction like you want to (bind appropriately) but remember that you have to tell the game how fast you want to be moving, because you do

If you want to point the front of the ship directly at what your looking at, hold down both mouse buttons. In space one mouse button clicked moves the camera, two mouse buttons controls direction and camera.

Nah, nah it's fine. I mean it's more complex than it looks. That's just what I'm saying though... moving around in WoW is pretty simple because there's no real reason for it to be more than that, you're never going to be fighting while flying. (... Usually. Their few attempts at it tended to be horrible for various reasons.) But in STO, the position of the spaceship is a major part of the combat so having precise control over direction, attitude, and so on, while being able to plan ahead a little bit, is important.

I mean it's not exactly dogfighting here (if anything it's more like battleships broadsiding) but there's some similar elements to it. Also,

This is the key point to remember. It is almost exactly like fighting with a big ole broadside, just the guns are aimed forward (mostly). If you played Assassins Creed IV you know what I mean.

If you are used to WoW's snap movement this will feel like snails on rubber cement.

While I agree, it can be much harder on an escort with the restrictive firing arc, it's often critical to get used to looking in a different direction than you're heading/shooting. Situational awareness can be the difference between living and dying. You can tell where your target is spatially by your weapons fire.

Personally I love how easy it is to control the ship with one hand while looking with another. I got used to controls like that in UT2K4 and I wish all games let you do that.

I finally built a cheapscort and holy poo poo, I love it. Sure, I love cruisers, but a decently kitted 'scort is a thing of beauty. Looking forward to a fleet ship.

I say sell 'em, they're going to be around for a while but right now they're still kind of new so their sale price on the exchange is a lot higher than what they will be soon. At the same time because people want to open the shiny new boxes keys are more expensive due to the increased demand.

Even a stack of 20 boxes won't go for much but it will pay the EC for a few rep projects at least, if there's anything you want out of lockboxes you can probably get it off the exchange for less than the cost of a key with the exception of the ships.

Chasecam still lets you move the camera all you want. It just means that if you stop managing it, instead of it orbiting you arbitrarily it defaults back to chasecam. Changes camera management from "you have to do this" to "you can do this when you want."

I kinda think ISE, if you draw 100% of the aggro, is a little harder now. I also switched from an A2B cruiser to a Drake escort so it could be just that.

People complaining about the Undine elites being hard though just blows my mind.

You really want your camera to focus on your current target rather than being a chasecam.

I think people are reading "chasecam" and assuming that's where you leave it while you fly around shooting things, which isn't it at all.

The primary behavior change by turning on chasecam is that the camera doesn't start orbiting you if you don't manipulate it. It's not that you don't still do every bit of deliberate camera manipulation you're doing now. It's that if you stop double mouse button'ing to control the camera the camera always goes back to the same spot relative to you. The thing that was driving me crazy about escort flying was that if I wanted to both be manipulating speed, direction, while keypress and clicking, I'd sometimes lose control of the camera perspective in ways that were unhelpful. Now if it happens it's always going back to something that's at least "OK."

I switched from an escort to a cruiser just for that one reason alone. That and the generosity of an undisclosed Wesley.

Back to game of :cryptic: :ughh:, I finally fixed my doff issue for now. That is to say, my 3x techs are staying put in the active space slot now. I still had to use the work around to slot them, but other methods on top of it were not working (at the time I was flying a jhdc). Having a desire for a vesta like ship for my romulan, I pulled out the dyson ship to roll around in. Not a bad ship mind you when fitted correctly. Anyway, having switched to it and set it up (equipment, boffs, skill tray, and doffs), I saved the loadout. The techs have since stayed where they belong instead of running to their mothers or whatever it was they were doing.
