In the last thread's OP, there was a link to a sample build for new players to follow, since respecing is apparently expensive and it's important to not make mistakes.

It's this: http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/index.php?build=escortbasics_0, but I don't see it in the new OP (though I could just be missing it).

If it's still good, it could be worth adding to the OP so new people don't gently caress up too much (like me)!

With the new season, I've finally got around to rolling a new character to start this game again, and I'm looking for an invite to the chat channel, and also Starfleet Dental

handle is Hennimore@fuzzydunlopp

I think I'm doing this right!

Having the Dental tag will secure you pubbie rage at any level, which is a large plus.

I was whispered by someone within 5 hours of joining to the effect of "i see dental has a new member, i hope you enjoy laughing at my dead son like the rest of them"

What have you guys been up to???

I think the original recipient of that bit of weirdness told me about in NextGooneration a week or two ago - I wish I could remember who. It was apparently unprompted - dude just had some kind of unprovoked episode and started rambling about Dentals making fun of his dead kid. Not that anyone was talking about his dead kid. Or dead kids in general. Or kids at all.

Space is full of broken people, basically.

This is how the reavers started

They called out someone named "squeeki nbreeki" by name, if that helps unravel the mystery. I'm playing the game after a long hiatus so I'm still learning who all interesting people are.

The F2P scheme is easily one of if not the best MMO payment schemes on the market.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of that. I was a subscriber to this game early in its lifespan (I forget which season, but I played while ground combat was still the usual MMO-style slog) and even though I'm F2P now, I really don't notice any features missing. The only thing I miss is extra bridge officer slots, but those aren't expensive (or even really necessary, I don't think) to unlock, it's an honest-to-god complete game without a subscription, which is nice to see in an MMO. I feel like most of the stuff you'd spend extra money on or unlock by subbing is cosmetic for the most part.

For QoL stuff, I love love love love love how all quests can be picked up/turned in just from a menu, no matter where you are in space. I play SWTOR too, and it's such a goddamn slog while leveling to hoof it around the map picking up quests and then returning to the questgiver to get your reward. I wish more games would copy STO in that regard.

It's impossible to tell if this is a funny person, or someone legitimately roleplaying a cat (based on what i've seen from STO's playerbase so far, either are believable) but I choose to think that this is a good joke.

It took me less than a week to get my Romulan to 50 and I still ended up only doing half the missions. Its really easy to level.

If you try to level exclusively through the story missions (the "episode" ones that go in progression), are there any gaps where you'll have to do filler stuff before the next episode mission becomes available?

I remember back when I originally played this, there was a gap around Romulan space where you had to grind patrol missions or whatever else to open up the next mission, but it seems like at this point they've added a lot more content, and also upped the xp rewards for doing it; I'm hoping you can just blast through without having to worry about it now.

and I also appreciate that they don't try to extort you into subbing by locking you out of content or whatever bullshit other crappy F2P games try to pull (I'm looking at you, SW:TOR).

Agreed on that! I was subbed back before this game was F2P, and I honestly don't remember what privileges that granted me over what I get out of the game today; with all the new content/QoL stuff they've patched in since release, the game is objectively less frustrating now than when I was paying for it.

I think the idea of people spending thousands on lockboxes is literally insane but if it compensates for me not paying anything for it, then I'm all for it I guess. Plus, people selling poo poo they don't want on the exchange just makes it even easier for me to not spend any real money on it.

For new players that are seeing all the negativity across the last few pages; the endgame grind is pretty bad in this game, but the mission/episode quest lines are actually not too bad, the path up to level 50 involves flying around in a spaceship and blowing up aliens, beaming down to a planet and shooting aliens and occasionally scanning aliens. The core gameplay in STO is actually fun in my opinion; and the game is free so it's worth a try.

You can fully enjoy this game without needing the cash shop if you follow some basic rules of thumb on your ship layouts. (You won't be able to complete the hardest of endgame content but who cares, it's all bad anyways)

Also: Starfleet Dental is one of the best groups of goons in any game, and incredibly helpful, they have just been playing so long they lost sight of the real goal: spraying pubbies with fire extinguishers.

That's good to hear. I have an on-again off-again relationship with this game and I don't think I've ever actually even reached the endgame, but I usually have fun with the leveling content while I'm playing it. Good to know that hasn't changed much, at least.

Does the endgame suck completely, or is there still at least some fun stuff to do when you get there?

I'm an idiot and have decided to start playing this game again after a long time away (I think I stopped playing before delta rising came out) to scratch my pew pew spaceship game itch. It looks like they went and changed some poo poo on me since the last time I played, so I have a couple newbie questions:

1) It looks like they drastically changed the level up skill upgrade system; is there a guide that tells me what the best build is (I'm a tac officer and I like beam cruisers) or does it not matter too much?

2) Is crafting a thing that I can safely ignore? When I used to play, I used to just ignore it and sell mats on the exchange for easy money; just making sure I'm not loving myself if I continue to do that, like maybe they've hidden away important endgame stuff behind crafting?
