The Cheshire Cat posted:

The problem in Venezuela is that as an oil rich nation it was able to grow on imports, without the agricultural base to sustain itself if the oil dried up or (as mentioned in the segment) if the value suddenly dropped. If they had built up a surplus or diversified their economy they would have been able to weather it better, but another issue with having a single strong export is that it's very easy to succumb to corruption. When you're rich on oil it doesn't actually take a lot of people to extract the wealth that drives your nation so the thinking eventually becomes "well what do I need all these OTHER people for?" This is why so many oil rich countries have such a poor standard of living except for the very top people - the only infrastructure they've built is what is necessary for the oil to be extracted and exported; everything else goes to the military or their own extravagant lifestyles. Chavez may have genuinely wanted to help his nation, but he also probably liked "being loved by the people" more than he liked responsible economic policy. Maduro isn't even well liked so there's no reason for him to even keep up the pretense of caring what people think.

The problem with using it as a point of comparison with the US is of course that the US economy is NOT driven entirely by the export of a single resource, and also has a pretty strong agricultural base to boot. The US has one of the most diverse and resilient economies on the planet which is why even if there are pockets of poverty, the nation as a whole has just gotten richer. Socialism would allow those riches to also benefit those pockets that have been hurt by the changing economy, but that would mean that billionaires might have slightly fewer billions so they pretend that the entire US economy is as fragile as Venezuela's and if you touch anything the whole nation will collapse.

I know that Stewart’s Daily Show innovated the practice of DVRing all the cable and network news, then searching the Closed Captioning to mine material. I wouldn’t be surprised that Oliver’s adopted a similar workflow at LWT.

As for how they obtain local news, I have no clue. A lot of stations stream their newscasts online; maybe they’re using that? Or they have watchers set up in key markets around the country?

Edit: Actually, I don’t know how well the CC searching method would work. A lot of local news is captioned by way of simply feeding the TelePrompTer script; as such, ad-libs in crosstalk often isn’t reflected in the CC. Since much of And Now is taken from that kind of filler...

There’s usually something in each episode that’s great, something that’s weak, a filler, and some average content

All 7 episodes are valid to exist on the strength of the NPR guy mosque bit alone.

I saw that it said "Repeat" on my DVR's guide, but I recorded it anyway, just in case. It's been marking new premieres of The Venture Bros. as repeats for the better part of the season for some reason, so I never really know. The show started with new content, but then it was just a framing device to set up the repeat. So, my DVR guide was right after all.

At least they had a bit of fun with it. I was hoping for a new episode, though.
I’d really like to see what little bit was used to start Sunday’s repeat. HBO doesn’t have it on their GO service and sifting through Youtube Hell has yielded nothing thus far.

In some SNL podcasts recorded last year, the hosts sometimes use boof in the context of, “this episode really boofs it.” Sounds like a synonym for beefing it, wiping out, eating poo poo. It isn’t unbelievable that, 35 years prior, in high school (wherein - and science proves this - everyone says stupid poo poo,) it could have had scatalogical implications

It’s also not unbelievable that kavanaugh did sex no-nos

On the subject of replies: Why does this thread seem to have a day or so delay? The show is on Sundays at 11/10c, right? Yet there is usually just one or sometimes two replies the night of broadcast, and then the usual TV IV-esque discussion starting 24-36 hours later.

Like, virtually every week. It’s so unlike any other TV IV thread I’ve seen.

So does no-one here watch it live? Are we all watching it on HBO Go or what have you the next day? Are we all truly the impoverished proletariat, unable to afford HBO, using :filez: or a friend’s HBO Go password to watch?

Myself, I never see it until Monday night. I haven’t had access to an HBO subscription since the last century.

I still have that really nice OG deluxe DVD set of Master and Commander. I’ve only actually sat down and watched the whole movie a few times in the 14 years I’ve had it. It’s always The Release I think of when I reflect on the glory days of DVD, when movies still came with booklets, cases didn’t have holes, and you didn’t have to import from Korea for a real collector’s edition

(Not my photo)

I should get that on blu-ray. Thanks for reminding me of this underrated gem.

And in that spirit, i would like to address the poor souls who just can’t even with all these posts, and would rather shut it down until the show returns: Go ahead and un-bookmark this thread, and then go into your phone and set a reminder for February 3 2019 to re-bookmark it. While we don’t know exactly when in February the show returns, not reading the thread for the next two months should limit your exposure to discussions that don’t interest you.
