That depends on what you like.

If you are a fan of Queenslanders, move anywhere south of the mason/dixon. Or the midwest.

If you like no rust and don't mind never seeing snow, try the southwest. Have fun with the CARB laws if you move to CA.

If you like high desert and/or big forests and/or it being rainy all the time and never snowing, try somewhere in the pacific northwest.

If you like winter and woods and roads that were designed by livestock (but also hills and mountains and twisty back roads) try the northeast. Sorry about the rust, it sucks. But we have $300 complete LSx drivetrains everywhere to make up for it.

Stay out of cities since you like cars and don't buy anything in a HOA.

I learned to drive standard by driving 550 miles from home, buying a 20,000lb military truck with a standard transmission, and then having to drive it home. Mechanical clutch and no synchro on first gear, and if there's one on second gear, it didn't work when I got it.

After much consultation with my good friend Jim Beam and noted Subaru and Jeep specialists I've conceived of the ideal automotive fastener.
M9x1.125 thread
190mm long unthreaded shank, followed by 17mm of threaded length
Head design shall be a combo 19 fine-spline internal and 12 coarse-spline external such that the socket will only fit on in one single orientation and the torque spec shall be such that using only an internal or external spline tool or not fully seating the socket will guarantee roundoff. The bottom of the spline flutes shall be necked down to prevent overtorquing (read: head drive surface shall shear before bolt shank does.) The bottom of the internal spline socket shall be inverse coned to prevent unauthorized users from drilling them out easily.
The head shall be reduced diameter and countersunk.
Fastener hardness ISO PC 14.999
Regular zinc plate

These fasteners shall be used to attach the tailhousing mounting flange (cast aluminum) of a $5k transmission to the cast aluminum housing of a $2.5k transfer case, each only used for a single model year of production. The reduced heads are specified because there is no clearance between the tailhousing side and bolt hole for a fullsize socket/ratchet.

Have fun with that one in 10 years! :fuckoff:

They actually manufacture 5 lobe torx plus security fasteners. Whoever came up with that atrocity should be tried for crimes against humanity, and is the inspiration for this post.

man, that sucks :( I hope he pulls through but that really doesn't sound good.

I didn't give a rats rear end about cars or driving in high school. Still didn't for the first few years of college.

Around 2006 I was pushed to get my license and still didn't really give a poo poo, at least till I borrowed one of the family beaters to go back to school. That was pretty awesome, still didn't care about cars as long as they ran and drove...

My requirements for my first car when I decided to buy it in 2008, right after getting my first job:
1. must be boxy and 80s styled
2. must be 4x4 because Reasons
3. must be automatic because I have no interest in learning to drive stick
4. must run and drive

With that in mind I was looking for a K5 Blazer, second or third gen Bronco, or Jeep Wrangler.

Then I ended up with a horrible rotted hosed worn out Cherokee because Wranglers were out of my price range. The rest is history.

(my parents thought I should use the $3k I'd saved up to put a down payment on a nice Honda. Glad I didn't do that.)

Yeah that is a well known feature of those vehicles. I fixed all the oil leaks on mine when I had the engine out for the 5-speed swap a few months ago and it retaliated by springing a leak in the power steering hose.

I got by just fine towing with a manual in my dually. The first gear is stupidly low to get you started, but that means you miss the bonus of 2 overdrive gears you get with the 6 speed autos

Wait, they switched to an aisin unit? No further objections... I have been impressed by the durability of every aisin transmission I have ever used.

I still feel like I got hit by a train from working on my big truck Sunday.

I guess that's what pulling 150lbs of manifolds and turbo off, then pulling 300lbs of cylinder heads and carrying them off the truck, then prepping everything and carrying it back up onto the truck will do to you. Oh, and what amounted to 112 reps of curling 100+lbs, there are 28 head studs and the torque spec is everything to 110, everything to 130, everything to 157, then everything to 157 again.

Best part was definitely falling off the truck with a 150lb cylinder head in my hands and having to choose between it and me, though, for sure. I caught my foot on something and ended up twisting around in midair like a cat and flinging the cylinder head into the stack of tires next to me so it wouldn't go straight through my ribcage, then landed sideways in the underbrush. That's the one good thing about working in the woods instead of a shop, that would have hurt a hell of a lot more on cement.

So yeah, this is why I don't have a gym membership.
