Triticum Guzzler posted:Highlights of that semi final to me: The judges seem way stricter about clean strikes than I'm used to. Any striking in the clinch doesn't score points, but can still set up your throw and of course hurt your opponent. Like I said earlier, it's sport over combat, so here are things that are categorically worth more than taking a Ghita high kick on your guard (which is 0 points + the accumulated bruising): 1 point: a light jab to the chest shield followed by tying up so you can't get countered aka the John Ruiz special 2 points: a quick teep or sidekick above the waist, even with no damage 1 point: falling down completely but lulling your opponent to step off the platform before the ref stops the action. You take -2 points for falling but 3 points for the pushoff Ghita's adjustment should have been going to the body instead of head-hunting with his punches, which his opponent wisely ducked every time. After watching all the semis, I've decided that the pushoffs are an insanely good gimmick.

This is a really nice signature sanshou technique: Sidekicks happen in sanshou because they score 2 points from a distance and are harder to catch than a round kick, but you can still catch them. Instead of sweeping the support leg, just pull them off balance and then redirect their leg to rotate them off balance. A clean throw (where you stay standing and don't fall on top of the throwee) is 2 pts, so it's a really good counter if you land it. This was at 80kg. I fought the US contestant a year ago at 85kg in a nationals event and lost in two rounds, one closeish. e2: oh yeah, one of the commentators was the ref for my fight and tried to 10-count me taking a groin shot. kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 02:15 on Oct 4, 2017 |

I've never thought about it before, but you can cheat and buy yourself time by saying something's wrong with your headgear. I saw a few people do this off of a big hit or when they needed a breather. The bigger turnoff is surely that Burma is poor as gently caress and a shithole compared to Bangkok Yes, the pay cut is probably not worth it, but I don't think a decently wrapped fist is any less damaging (in the rock your brain sense) than big gloves. Smaller surface area could mean better chance of cracking an orbital or jaw. Though it is somewhat gated by trying not to punch so hard as to break your hand during the fight. That and the knees, elbows, and kicks are all the same as normal kickboxing.

The World Sanda championships are going on now in Shanghai. In honor of Duncan who thought the matches were really entertaining, I'll wade through and post stuff I think is cool. For now, here's a guy I fought in 2016 (and got handled by his throws and overall wrestling): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAK-Ld7hW44&t=14959s McKenzie is fighting pretty much how he did 2 years ago -- not a very active striker but likes the lead kick, good at timing into a takedown if you telegraph a committed kick, doesn't really care about distance cuz his tie-up is really good, likes to stall out from there. Not super fast, but he looks faster here than against me. His opponent is on the low end of the skill spectrum for worlds, and McKenzie's kick catch counters could have won him the fight pretty handily, but he just left off the gas in the 3rd in crucial moments. That's sort of sanda for you -- the lead can change very quickly without you spending a lot of energy or even hurting your opponent. Funny enough, he got counted on a groin kick just like I did on my first fight.

Just watching them on the organizing federation's channel: http://youtube.com/user/iwufwushu/videos Note that the Sanda events are being held in conjunction with various wushu form competitions. e: I have two posts on the ruleset and scoring in sanshou: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3630848&userid=118079&perpage=40&pagenumber=2#post476988189 "sanda" is sometimes used to refer to the pro ruleset, which has knees and is scored by who won the round instead of technique points, and is usually in a ring. This is mostly to entice other kickboxers to have a larger competition field. But in this event, sanda is just sanshou. Quick scoring rundown followed by a goofy self-inflicted slide off the platform: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=1595s The plastic canvas is only just grippy enough, so it's very easy to not be able to stop yourself from sliding off that last meter of danger zone before the edge of the leitai. e2: oh, same as last worlds, one of the announcers is the fuckin ref who gave me the 8 count for getting kicked in the balls (it's a small sport so they're hurting for anyone to commentate on it). kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 07:00 on Oct 24, 2019 |

This is a fun takedown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=3391s The big gloves give you some different grip options from wrestling or mma. Blue traps the lead hand under her armpit, using the bulk and texture of the glove as a handle, and then keeps her other arm free to reap the leg as she throws red over her back. More standard 2 on 1 arm throw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=3430s e: blue making the rookie mistake of staying out past the yellow line and pays for it, stepping off with one foot after that spinning backfist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=4567s The sidekick was a stylish finisher. Fight goes into round 3 (so tied 1-1) and coming to the end of the round very close. Each fighter is trying to find one winning exchange to take the round. Red throws a lead round kick to try to hit the body without much engagement, but it's too telegraphed. Blue catches the heel, feints the punch to the head and steps in to kick out the red's support leg, but comes up short as red hops back. Red's kicking foot is free and plants far out, giving him the base to wrench blue backwards for the takedown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=11876s There's some flurries from blue at the end that I think could easily have been called, but were not. This is a good showcase fight. Red dominates with a variety of kick catches and smart ring tactics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=12770s The only fight where one fighter landed heavily enough to get multiple standing counts (watch through the end of the fight): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mwZEP_mSA&t=14205s From the world championships I've watched, winning on hard striking is not a common strategy. It seems risk in terms of energy expenditure. ok, watched through the first session of Day 1 there. kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 08:45 on Oct 24, 2019 |

ok, finally got back to watching. Sweet takedown to counter blue trying to do something by switching to southpaw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=4837s Sanshou fighters' ability to take a lovely bent over at the waist body lock and do something with it amazes me. The kid from the US was pretty mediocre when I last went to nationals, but he developed enough to take his weight class. Just not nearly enough for the world stage. Didn't see the succeeding throw coming at all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=5144s Very fancy and high energy setup for that takedown, but it worked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=6172s The mercy rule is at a 12 pt differential. There's live scoring somewhere within view of the fighters, I think. The announcers can see it, but it's not overlaid on the stream, unfortunately: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=6500s Interesting bit of ruleset tactics by blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=7562s To make sure red doesn't stay on his feet and score 2 for the throw, blue turks red's leg on the way up to ground red, to reduce the throw to 1 point. When it's two Western Europeans, you're bound to see mostly kickboxing, as that's the training backgrounds of the fighters. Less charitably, they washed out of being competitive in those sports. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=8135s 1:22 for amusing lack of ring awareness, 0:39 to lose the round by 2 ring outs in the round. Very efficient ring out victory rounds, in 50s of total fight time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w17hN2Jd3Ec&t=11642s Even though wrestling takes a lot of energy, it's undeniably a good way to go if your edge lets you cut rounds short.
