One of the (many) crazy things about Aum before the subway attack was that they had tried chemical/bio warfare several times. They used botulin toxin and loving anthrax, but no one noticed and only a few animals died. They also had a supply of VX nerve agent, most recently in the news for being what killed Kim Jong Nam. Asahara wanted to used ebola, but settled on sarin. He tested it on a small town and killed 7 people, but the Japanese government didn't put all this together until after the subway attack. How'd they get all this stuff? The cult was (is?) populated by biochemists and engineers because Aum was an "elite" religion. It attracted college educated, wealthy professionals. Asahara didn't order the attack on the subway until the police started getting interested in Aum. It started under the Diet building, where parliament meets. Asahara's goal was to stop the police from investigating Aum. You'd think he'd want more than that, but no. Just wanted the police off his case. Five teams of cult members punctured packets of liquid sarin in the trains. Train workers picked up the packets to throw them away or just straight up kicked them off the trains and then went on about their business. The trains were in service for up to 2 hours before someone noticed something wasn't right and people began dropping like flies. MIraculously only 12 people died, but over 5000 were affected. Ambulances couldn't get through due to the amount of people in the streets. Police presence was non-existent. Once doctors were finally informed that it was sarin, it was too late to save people or keep them from suffering crippling effects like blindness.

All of the Aum cultists that left the sarin packets escaped, but were eventually caught and sentenced to death. Asahara was caught eventually too, and is on death row, but he says he's innocent. Aum has moved to Russia where it's now called Aleph, and is led by another crazy person. As far as I know, at least the new leader hasn't claimed he's Jesus, Buddha, a pope, has special DNA, is telepathic, and that drinking his blood will make people levitate.

If anyone wants more info, I suggest Underground by Haruki Marukami.

i started having headaches about a year ago, chalked it up to terrible genes. doctor put me on some meds and that worked for a while, but then i started intermittently losing vision in my right eye, dizziness/weakness spells, sleeping all the time (like 14-16hrs/night, sometimes all day during weekends) so my doctor ordered an mri. turns out there was a baseball sized tumor that had made its home in my skull and was pushing my brain all out of whack. six weeks ago today i had surgery to remove it. no symptoms since. i hope all you goons with headaches get an mri just to make sure. 99% of the time its nothing so serious, but without that mri, i wouldve continued on eting excedrin migraine like candy.

(They were still cutting willy-nilly.)

i didnt have a lobotomy, but i do have experience with a minor trepanning. a quick spray of lidocaine on my scalp, then they went to town with an old school hand-cranked drill. didnt feel a thing. they also told me i wouldnt remember anything, but oh yes i do. hard to forget someone drilling a hole into your skull.

yes, that was a bit of attention whoring on my part, but i thought i told my brain tumor story in here once before.

so i had this thing:

and needed this thing:

to drain the CSF because there was too much pressure building up in my skull. i had that hanging off me for 9 days, and if anyone is wondering, CSF is a clear orange-pink. i thankfully dont need a shunt since there was enough room freed up by the tumor removal.

the immediate aftermath:

it took 7 hours to remove the baseball sized tumor, which was a non cancerous meningioma. happens more in women age 20-34, so i was just outside that at 36. no one know what causes them, so mine got sent to a special "tumor board." this happened back in 2018. i was up and walking the next day. had to take 2 months off of work though.

i actually love talking about it and thankfully wasnt traumatized by it or anything, though i cant stand the smell of whatever brand of hand sanitizer the hospital used anymore.

i was slowly/intermittently losing vision in my right eye, and i was constantly dizzy and weak. also had hella migraines. all that went away almost immediately. i still get minor headaches, and my neck tightens up real easily since they had to cut into the muscles to get to where the tumor was.

packetmantis posted:

That tumor story owns. Did you squirt people with your CSF tube (I hope not because that's unsanitary but it would still be funny)

no and thankfully it never spilled while i was toting it around. it had to come with me to physical therapy and the bathroom, so my head was constantly cocked to the left. theres still a pocket of CSF under my skin at the surgery site. i think a mesh was used to cover the hole in my skull and the bone is supposed to close in over it, so essentially im leaking CSF under my scalp. its squishy, and i can make it "breathe" by flexing. I had it drained once last year, and my neurosurgeon shoved like a 400 gauge needle into it without anesthetic and kept scraping it against my skull until i screamed for him to stop. wont be doing that poo poo again, id rather deal with a lumpy head. i sleep on a donut since my head's too sensitive to lay back directly onto a pillow.

i went to a foo fighters concert 2 weeks later. $150 floor seats; brain surgery or no, i was going to that concert.

i was in the hospital for 9 days, total cost $225k+. i paid about $6300
