Definitely seconding Ivan Milat. I've lived in the area he hunted in since I was a kid and it is probably best described as fairly dull otherwise. What makes it even worse was that there was at least one victim who escaped and reported it to the local police .. Who promptly lost the file. Paul Onions ended up being the star witness in the case against Milat when he was finally caught years later.
In an even creepier twist, Milat's great-nephew Matthew was recently charged with murder after luring another young guy out to Belanglo (where most of the bodies from the original backpacker murders were buried) and killed him with a double bladed axe.
http://murderpedia.org/male.M/m/milat-matthew.htm

In sentencing, Acting Justice Jane Mathews read out this "particularly chilling" poem Matthew Milat wrote more than nine months after the murder.

Agreed, but I do understand why we get a load of serial killers posted, it's like when you're sat in a pub chatting - people chip in with similar stories and so it goes on.
I do love the oddball and strange stuff posted in this thread though.

TL; DR version is crazy dude who blew up a Gulag to escape comes to America, starts a new life, then gets into gambling debt. Plants a bomb in a casino for ransom.
Bomb is unable to be disarmed, like at all. He desifned a bomb that could only end one way- by detonating 1000lbs of stolen TNT
There are some better sites that I can't seem to find, but having spoke to EOD techs while in the Army, they say that even today, there is no way to disarm his bomb. His bomb design is still studied to this day Dude was like a bomb genius and it is unnerving that a guy with a bit of intelligence and a lot of balls could build something so devasting.

The bomb looks really really fascinating to me:

Like nothing I have ever seen before.

Maybe I am just tired, but I didn't pick up any sarcasm in this post at first.
The bomb design was neat, because he anticipated the bomb techs reactions, and by making it a big rear end non-descript metal box he countered some of the simple and basic Bomb Squad methods of examining the device. The whole story is insane to me.

I'm not being sarcastic at all, I can't recall ever seeing a bomb looking anything like that thing and would love to see the x rays of it that were took, I spent ages looking and couldn't find them online anywhere.

I'm assuming they make nuclear warheads in such a way that it would be damned near impossible to set one off by accident. Like, you cant walk up and hit one with a hammer Bugs Bunny style to set it off....right?

Pretty much, check out this instance of a plane carrying nuclear bombs that broke up in mid air, none of the bombs went off:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1961_Goldsboro_B-52_crash

The second bomb plunged into a muddy field at around 700 miles per hour (310 m/s) and disintegrated without detonation of its conventional explosives. The tail was discovered about 20 feet (6.1 m) below ground. Parts of the bomb were recovered, including its tritium bottle and the plutonium.[13][page needed] According to nuclear weapons historian Chuck Hansen, the bomb was partially armed when it left the aircraft though an unclosed high-voltage switch had prevented it from fully arming.[9] In 2013, ReVelle recalled the moment the second bomb's switch was found. “Until my death I will never forget hearing my sergeant say, 'Lieutenant, we found the arm/safe switch.' And I said, 'Great.' He said, 'Not great. It’s on arm.'”[14]

Carroll Edward Cole raped and strangled at least 14 women between 1971 and 1980. Not exceptional or shocking by this thread's standards, until you notice that he approached authorities at least three times asking to be committed because of his urge to rape and strangle women and was turned away each time.

Some serial killers get away with their crimes for so long because they're smart and are aware of what to do to avoid the police, but how can the authorities excuse themselves when more than a dozen women die at the hand of a man who repeatedly told them to get him off the streets before he killed?

Yeahhhhh....
