Amazing intro for the Giro Mr. Nice!

It was seriously windy here today. I don't know how a skinny climber guy could put out the kind of power to beat TT specialist Tony Martin. I don't think TM was on top form though so it could be an unfair comparison.

A mix of old school pictures. Some of them aren't that old but boy do they look dated with the advances in helmet design.

I had a friend who blew a 1.7 but later charged with 1.4 after blood tests. They banned him from driving for a year plus a massive fine. Where it got interesting was certain markers in his blood meant the court deemed him as an alcoholic. As such the risk of recidivism allowed them to suspend his license back until he proved via regular and random testing and psych meetings that he was clean for like 12 months. Like Ulrich it was also this guys 2nd offense, only he didn't have an accident or hurt anyone. Since they're victims involved, I expect Ulrich to have a really really bad time in the Swiss courts.

I'd start a petition written in like 4 major languages requesting that he stop racing but I'm trying really hard to be a better person and dog piling him probably isn't in line with that.

Will you guys please tell me when to give a gently caress about this Giro? I've not watched a single stage and I feel like I've not missed a thing.

Those guys chose that local because it's historically been void of testers. National anti-doping agencies don't have the funds to send testers to far flung destinations and they know that.

I'm going to miss today's stage :( on the other hand I'm in the middle of The French wine country.

Worth it if it's Bordeaux or Bourgogne :)
The stage should be on the Rai website in the evening.

Bourgogne, very worth a visit if anyone is considering it, not many mountains so leave the bike at home. Funnily enough the owner of the domaine we visited's son is a massive MTBer so got some bike porn in too.

Can't wait to catch up on today's stage tonight. Criterium and TDS soon, looking forward to them.

Gonna ride up Emosson for the stage have to go up the Forclaz before to get there. Forclaz sucks though, 1000m climb, solid burn at 7-8% like 3 actual hairpins and maybe 3-4 bends rest is straight, nothing remarkable about the climb. Can't see anyone doing a meaningful attack on it. Emosson on the other hand is a beautiful climb.

Froome is scared of Wigs riding the TDF because he knows he'd lose serious time to him on the cobbles. Wigs could then take the yellow once they hit the mountains. Convention prevents attacking a team mate wearing yellow. If he didn't follow convention it'd not sit well with the peloton and it would be a serious PR headache for Sky. Similar to what happened on Astana between Lance and Contador, just Lance couldn't hold a candle to Contador that year.

CWG are incredibly important for a few sports. Weightlifting and track cycling being among them. Specifically track cycling where 3 of the 4 dominant countries are members of the commonwealth. Nobody gives a gently caress about the road race.

Laura Trott and Jason Kenny don't agree.

quote:

Trott said of the Commonwealth Games: “A lot of people don’t even take it seriously. It’s the same with a lot of countries.

“I went to Delhi [in 2010] as a youngster and there was barely anyone there. It’s not the same as a World Championships and it’s certainly not the same as an Olympic Games.”

In the same article, published on Wednesday, Kenny said that a “lot of members of the public probably see the Commonwealths as second only to the Olympics but, when you’re actually involved in the sport, it doesn’t seem that way. It gets devalued a bit.”

They were later forced to 're-explain' themselves.

Personally, any track racing that gets on TV is always a plus for me as it's usually never on.

Imma be here tomorrow, riding up the last two cols with a few friends then settling in on a hair pin, probably the one the 2nd last picture was taken from.

These are some of my pictures from last year, don't remember if I posted any before.

This is the start of the Col du Forclaz looking towards Martigny.

Higher up looking back to the valley

Onto the climb up to Emosson

Near the top

I don't expect any meaningful attacks on the Forclaz, it's too consistant and far from the finish and frankly too easy of a climb to pose any threat to the guys in the GC unless they happen to have lost all of their team mates.

The views are spectacular up to Emosson, more importantly there is also very little cover from the wind and on my previous ascent there was a brutal headwind which really came into play for the last Kilometre which could make closing gaps even harder. This is the sort of climb that should break either Froome or Contador, the final 6KM is made of sections with average gradients between 9-10%.

On the final climb, I'm next to the panda. There is a mini storm at the summit. Tail wind nearly the whole way up the climb.

I think Froome is letting Contador take yellow so his team have to control the race tomorrow. I...cant say its the best decision but if you're not feeling great I can see why you'd give up a lead of 4-5 seconds.

Fuckin lol. He had no say in the matter.

I saw the panda just now on the highlights. Nice spot to watch a bike race.

I didn't get too many pictures as I was busy streaming the stage on my phone at the same time. The Forclaz was more annoying than usual, a power zapping 31 Celsius for the way up, couldn't go too crazy as I was going to overheat.

The sky started throwing down a few drops of rain at random on our ascent to Emosson and the incoming storm was making moisture just appear in the air, everything was gathering condensation. It helped keep the heat down a bit for the final climb but left me completely soaked. The dam at the top had some of the team buses lined across it, it looked amazing but the photo really doesn't do it justice, the light was terrible and within 10 minutes the clouds blocked out the whole view. I'd have gotten closer for a better angle but it was 9c not counting wind chill and the rain at the summit, I was only sporting summer gear and was shivering uncontrollably whilst a shade of turning blue.

The mountains are in two distinct tones, the water level in the dam rises during the summer as the snow melts.

We grabbed some warmth and food in the restaurant at the top and then went down to meet our friends. To our surprised one was dressed like this:

She drove up before the road closure and got ready for the peloton. Eventual stage winner Westra is in the background while he was still some distance off the back of the Katusha duo.

Unsurprisingly none of the GC group gave a second glance. We shouted out to Jens who came up a while later on his own to high five the panda but he was busy talking to someone in the Giant Shimano car to play along, nearly all the Garmin riders were laughing along. Once the news Westra had won and Contador had taken yellow the dropped Astana and Tinkov riders were happy to join in.

My souvenir of the day along with some near top 10 times for the climbs on Strava was a Lotto Belisol bidon that a rider in the grupetto no longer needed.

I can understand him realizing he's not the rider Contador is and then riding his own race but dropping out of the top 10 all together! This was a race Sky had selected their best riders for him to win it.

Wonder how busy Bradley's phone was yesterday.

It's hot again today. I will be surprised (but also kinda not cause he's a beast) if Tony Martin can hold on to yellow today. It going to be a good battle up to Verbier with a tail wind up.

My local bike shop owner was lamenting how we've got it easy now with compacts as he used to race back in the Colorado Rockies with regular cranks and a 11-23 cassette. Given his age, that must've been in the late 70s early 80s.
