A fedora is a dress hat. If you're going somewhere hats are appropriate and you're dressed formally, you can wear a fedora. Especially if it's explicitly mobster-themed; that's the whole point of theming. As long as you're somewhat able to pull it off, it'll be seen as a quirk at most. Same with pipes or whatever else. Have a sense of restraint and don't be a socially maladjusted neckbeard and you can pull off most things. Disclaimer: I don't own a fedora; not a hat guy.

I'm mostly baffled by the list at the end recommending beers that are unpasteurized and unfiltered. Why would someone going on about CHEMICALS object to the process of filtering? Pasteurization? Those can only make things have less chemicals*, which I would think was a net win.

Laocius posted:No, it's sort of like homophobia. The difference is just that homophobia is supposed to mean fear of homosexuality, but heterosexism is a more general bias against it and doesn't imply any specific emotional responses. Homophobia never meant the fear of the gays, though. It's a bad word coined by someone who is bad at language, but everybody knows what it means. There's really no need for another word that means the same thing; the only people who argue about the meaning of the word homophobia are contrarians who'd find something stupid to say about any synonymous term. For a moment I was puzzled that someone could be a practicing Sikh and back the Tea Party, but then I remembered that the Tea Party allegedly bases its morality on the teachings of Jesus. My cultural bias is showing.

It's the latter. There are people in the FBI whose job is to look at child porn reports and try to identify the victims in case they're being repeatedly molested and the like. It's basically the worst job in the world. Incidentally, internet pedophiles don't understand why they aren't allowed to do the job instead of people who are psychologically destroyed by it. Some of them even offer to do it freelance, pro bono.

RFC2324 posted:For instance, did you know that Canada and Mexico are both part of America? kazil posted:Canada and Mexico are part of North America, when you say America without the qualifier it means the US. There's no point arguing this. America is a continent, and it is entirely correct to refer to, say, Brazilians or Canadians as Americans, but there's also a country that takes up 40% of its mass called (the United States of) America. They're both America, and anytime you make statement either way about people outside the US being Americans someone will smugly inform you that you're wrong. Incidentally, calling a Canadian American will offend both Canadians and United Statesians. Zulily Zoetrope has a new favorite as of 18:08 on Jun 21, 2014 |

You are wrong, and I'd be ashamed of whatever school you went to for teaching you about the great, mythical continent of America containing Brazil and Canada. A continent is a continuous body of land, separated from others by bodies of water. Further conventions also put this separation between larger bodies connected by a narrow stretch of land, as well as the geopolitical border between Europe and Asia. The latter is by far the most common usage in the United States, but fortunately, the English language is not defined by US conventions alone.

I often wonder if the debate was legit, or some sort of weird educational piece. Doesn't the US standard use four liters of potable water every time you pee? Like even if you did some math and it turns out that thanks to some hidden costs even the soldiers themselves don't see, a US Army soldier's takehome pay is lower than a fast food worker's, I'd just say that whatever bill gets passed to fix the minimum wage should also probably cover soldier's incomes too. No, of course there isn't. Treating the world as a zero sum game is just a very palatable way of rejecting any effort to make anyone's life easier. This is the same kind of person who will complain about foreign aid because there's still people going hungry at home, then reject any notion of welfare because people on the dole are just lazy moochers already. The boys are just a good target because they make less than minimum wage (assuming a 168 hour work week).
