That's basically what they do now. Google's IP is in Bermuda, and the royalties it charges the other branches are how profits get shifted offshore.

I'm just sort of picturing somebody walking by a "Don't Be Evil" plaque at Google headquarters, only to cough and dislodge a piece of cardboard hiding a second line reading "Be Cartoonishly Evil!".

This thread's always a great reassurance that I'm doing right by myself by being a teetotaler. Holy mother of Christ, some of you people need to take up cooking or something.

Seriously, bake a pizza from scratch or something. It's very fulfilling, doesn't pickle your brain, and then you have a delicious pizza to eat afterwards. It's like finding a $20 bill in your pocket and then realizing it's folded around a $100. Cooking owns.

Everything is hosed. We know that. But that doesn't mean it has to stay hosed. We can do our best to improve things, for other people, and for their children, and their children's children. Give people a hand up from homelessness. Educate those who think they're just having fun. Inspire people to do right.

Slowly, and with great pain, we are doing our best to improve things for everyone.

I really enjoy when you and I post in succession with different tones. It's like the BBC giving equal time.

My current job made it perfectly clear that they will refuse to hire someone who does not have a degree-- even to answer the phones. My job pays better than being a retail clerk, but on the other hand, it doesn't pay enough to actually repay my loans and pay rent at the same time. Before getting this job, I was turned down for years for not having a degree. Then I got a degree, and I got a job. But again, see: "doesn't pay enough to repay loans".

Who is in the wrong here? Me, for getting a liberal arts degree that my current employer requires? The employer, for requiring a liberal arts degree just to answer phones? The college, for charging $50k+ for a liberal arts degree that only gets me a ~$14/hr job?

I'm going out on a limb and saying that any employer paying less than $30k a year is always in the wrong, automatically.

Is that really what it's like out there? I mean even in 2008 when there were literally no jobs in my industry (engineering construction with no degree) at the most it would only be like 90 days between being laid off because a project was put on hold / canceled and finding a new one. Yeah every one of those jobs was at least a 15%-30% pay cut over what I should have been / was making at the time but god drat that's just pathetic.

Just before I wrote off job seeking with my current degree in favor of going for a second one, I ran across a posting for a part time management trainee for, like, a Rent-a-Center or something. They wanted, I think, five years of management experience.

That about encapsulated the current job market in Nevada for me.

I attempted college in 99 (maybe completed a year total in 3) and by the time I was old enough to drink I was making decent money so I just stopped going all together. Now I got massively lucky since I started doing this stuff while I was still in HS and now have over 15 years experience so I make what people fresh out of college make right now in my industry which is $60k.

School is for suckers ya'll, I've been a slacker all my life and still made it.*

*I also know I won the loving lottery to get where I am today.

The gently caress kind of industry are you in where you make $60k fresh out of college?

I'm a drafter which means I take all the horse poo poo that incompetent engineers design and actually make it work. I also teach those same people who are fresh out of school how to actually use the $2-$6k programs they'll be required to work on.

Christ, I should have gone into engineering. If I'm enough of a horrible person to have succeeded in business school, I'm sure I could have swung engineering!
