Interesting. Did you do anything in the time since regarding financial regulations, legislation, etc?

Kinda curious what you expect him to have done. We just had a study released in regards to this exact thing, i.e. if you aren't part of the oligopoly you don't mean poo poo and can't regulate/legislate anything. If he was on someone's couch for awhile because of the 2008 crisis he's most likely not a 1%-er, and if he's not what can he be expected to do with regards to financial regulations or legislation?

As I am planning my enrollment in Graduate school for the fall, I'm also dealing with the reality that my undergrad loans are coming due soon. Holy poo poo this is a nightmare. I'm going to have to buckle down in the next few days and call the federal loan service and work out an extension so that I don't have to worry about it, or try and get income based repayment set up. I turned 41 in January, and I don't plan on paying this poo poo back. I know that sounds horrible, but the system is dumb as gently caress. Once I have my graduate degree I'm going to leave the country and they can suck my dick if they want their money back. Well, I guess if I land a good job that pays well, I might just pay them off the first few years. I live poor, so paying my entire income towards my loans wouldn't put me out too much. I could deal with it. But I know the reality, I will probably be well educated and in a ton of debt, with a lovely job. I refuse to be a debt slave. gently caress that.

RATIONAL ACTORS, FREE MARKET...oh gently caress why are so many of our educated people leaving the country?

Though I am a bit curious. Do they not see the student loan bubble coming and think this can go on forever, is there some reason it won't actually happen that I don't understand or is there some finance industry horse-poo poo wizardry with no grounding in reality that can be pulled to somehow suck even more money out of the situation as the whole system burns to the ground?

It's the last one isn't it?

It's about as internally consistent as what someone else pointed out earlier; it would be morally OK to force poors to get sterilized or legally demand they use birth control so they stop having welfare children because that is the root cause of all our social ills, but if you try to institute a system of providing free birth control and education to use it so they have that small measure of control over their own life well then gently caress that's just socialism.

These are two lines of conversation that I've heard many times from conservative people. I had never put them together in my head, but the instant someone here did it things crystalized for me. I don't see it as possible to compare and contrast those two talking points without coming away with the conclusion that it's about nothing other than loving the poor.

Why are gun rights such an important issue in the US? I was thinking about this the other day, but what makes people care about guns above all other political concerns. If a Republican candidate is listing his or her conservative credentials, the first thing they mention is their NRA rating.

I've always felt like it was a horribly misguided reaction to a lot of the topics we discuss here. In my mind the guys who fetishize 'resisting tyranny' know, on a gut level, that stuff like the study from a ways back showing that we are an oligopoly is true. They can bellyfeel that amerifree is total bullshit and much like many people here they want to do something about it while getting the overwhelming sense that, well, gently caress you you're not a part of the 1%. Those desires get hijacked by marketing campaigns and political propaganda then turned into something that somebody else can profit from. Either by selling them more guns to 'protect' themselves or fueling the rage-machine to get them out and voting against their own self interests.

Is it strange that I thought the EXACT same thing?

Fun fact about Leverage, a lot of their evil-people-doing-evil-things stories are based in reality....sort of. The actual real stuff is so repulsive and disgusting that people won't believe it in the show so the stories they run are cleaned up a bit and made not quite as mustache-twirlingly evil as reality.

I have no advice for what to drink.

I really agree with the tone of this article. I think they could have done a better job within the article itself, and that a good first step would be to never, ever mention the name of killing spree murderers like this. Don't dignify them with a name, don't give them the spotlight they want. Name their victims, put the face of their victims on the news, with family permission, and change the conversation from "Oh my god did you see what Shooter X did? That's so sad, tut tut" to "Look at those people who were killed by some nameless murderer. How horrible is that?"

...but I'm sure some bean counter on Fox News has determined that they get a .05% increase on their quarterly earnings report by giving them that fame and having everyone tune in to the nightly news so of course that will never happen. Gotta keep that profit going.
