Needless stories stapled on to updated versions of Persona titles is my thing dragging these games down. At least P3 had the decency to not shoehorn in an entire new character for it, unlike P4G.

Games with a bunch of unlockable poo poo like that should have a "party mode." Disable achievements/trophies/online leaderboards/etc., but unlock all the characters, levels, equipment, or whatever. Taking a disc-based Smash Brothers or Mario Kart game to have a blast with your buddies and then spending hours unlocking stuff so Emily can use her favorite character or Steve can race on his favorite track is loving lame.

I wish Dynasty Warriors did this with Free Mode. It would encourage new players to commit to a faction if they could try out all the officers from the start with a buddy.

This is a good point, which is why stuff that has nothing to do with mechanics should be unlocked outright, like vanity costume pieces. If that stuff has mechanical applications, sure, hold on to it, but I want to look my best now dammit so if it makes no game play difference let me have it.

I like unlocking cosmetic items. It depends on how games go about it. I still think Okami had a great idea with unlocks.

Persona 3 FES's add-on The Answer really could have done without forcing me to level grind straight out of the gate. Also not giving me a chance to refill my party's MP before the first big battle - it might have been defensible if MP-restoring items had been made available up to that point, but they weren't.

I remember having a fight where I made myself immune to my opponents' elemental affinity. They proceeded to cast Almighty spells until my party wiped. They never knew Almighty spells and would never cast them if I weren't immune to their element. It was just a way to make sure I didn't exploit the game but in a really bullshit way.

Is Inglourious Basterds bad for not being an action movie?

I am not trying to tell you that you're wrong for not liking ME2, because reasons for liking something or not liking it can never be wrong. I am saying, though, that "this isn't what I thought it was/should be" is never a valid criticism, no matter how much you think it should be something else. Think of it this way: pretend I'm Mr. Mxyzptlk, and I use my reality warping magic to make all trace of ME1 vanish from existence. Would this mean that ME2 is now better? Because to me, that's self-evidently nonsense.

And I don't want to single anybody out here, I think people confusing "this is bad" and "I didn't like it" is one of the biggest problems in video game criticism.

I didn't really care for Big Smile Lee. They build him up as the guy behind all the backstabbing and underhanded poo poo going on but I think you only really talk to the guy in two scenes and then you fight him in the teahouse area.

Also it's cool to do slow motion shootouts in the game but I didn't like how you had to trigger them with stunts instead of having a dedicated button for it. It works when you vault over cover but it was a crapshoot if it activated when you're shooting from your car.

I think that was a problem with all the characters, you rarely spent enough time with each one to develop any bond with them yet the game makes out that they are either your best friend in the world or public enemy number 1 even though you've only met them in 1 or 2 missions. I felt that there could've been a lot more side missions away from the main story missions to help build up your relationship with them. It would've helped gain Triad rep too.

I think it depends. I like the characters you meet early on. I thought Jackie and Roland were annoying cliches initially, but the writing was good enough to get me on their side when it mattered. Same thing with Winston and Conroy.

Big Smile Lee gets talked up but when you meet him he just feels like a regular thug instead of someone really threatening.

The other thing that felt off from Sleeping Dog's tone was the dating side stuff. They're so vestigial and once you get the in-game benefit from dating a girl they're gone from the story. Emma Stone even voices the first girl you date, that seems like such a waste to cast someone notable for a bit part.

I wouldn't even mind this as long as they made it clear which missions were "chase this guy until you reach the point where you can kill him" and which were just "chase and kill this guy." Like if the objective popup would say "Follow So-and-so" if they're scripted invincible until you hit the part where you can kill them vs. "Kill So-and-so" if they're not invincible and you just have to kill them, that'd be great. It's the part where you waste a ton of ammo because you can't tell if the guy's invincible or if you're just missing the driver that pisses me off.

This is one of the worst things in V. Two out of three chases were follow missions until the target crashed into something and fifteen minutes into the third one I realized that the game wanted me to actually kill the guy.
